dude portal 1 alone is a good 5 steps above pretty much anything produced this decade. The recent trend is to give minimal focus to gameplay and no focus to creativity because all you need to sell the game is fancy graphics and extras and other shiny crap.

Graphics really aren't as important as people think these days; the current console generation is getting old and graphics development has pretty much grinded to a halt these past few years. Crysis (which came out in 2007!) is still the best looking game on the market, which says a lot.

graphic obsession is only one of the many symptoms of the problem. The problem is something I can't quite put my finger on that just seems to make games these days unoriginal and dollar for dollar not nearly as fun as older games. I mean if they made a super mario bros 4 or sonic 4(that new crap should be called sonic 1.5 cause it's basically just sonic 1 with better graphics) I'd be all over it. Give me a mario level creator and i'll be set for a year or two.

@waldoman7 I see what you mean and if you prefer 80's style platform games over shooters and RPG:s then hey, no problem. I like games like that too, on the occasion. But just because you prefer a certain genre doesn't mean the age in which they are less popular is low on creativity and gameplay focus. I'd say most platform-games release back in the days were ridiculously uncreative Mario-ripoffs without much to offer in terms of new gameplay. It's the same thing, with another genre.

The first shooter you play is fun. The rest seem stupidy unoriginal and repetitive for the most part. props to halo for things like superspeed and teleporters to give it a twist, but while that might make a good game it doesn't make a great game, and it's not the kind of creativity that I'm looking for. The halo 3 map builder made it great though.

Portal offers a completely new type of gameplay while challenging your brain in a way that it's never been challenged before.
