That is the entrance to a little cave like hole that it lived in. Octopuses are amazingly strong and the rock that was placed over the hole is no problem for the octopus to remove.

try to put a crab in a jar with a pull of cap its freaking awesome if your octopus is smart enough he will remove teh cap and eat teh crab.
