You are correct. She is not demonstrating the Finnish technique. Keep up the Nordic Walking, Exer-striding or Urban Pole walking...whatever you call it... I have maintained my goal weight during those 24 months and have not looked back. Happy walking with or without poles. Just get up and go... :)
This doesn't have much to with the original Finnish technique - , elbows should be bent, hands should go behind hips and open (not possible without proper straps on poles). The original technique uses up to 50% more energy than normal walking (compared to the 28% mentioned here). Greets from Switzerland - BEEfit.ch
She is demonstrating the original Exerstrider technique developed in the 1980s by Tom Rutlin. It differs from the European Nordic Walking technique in having straighter, more forward arms (at pole plant) and not letting the hand pass behind the body (and so no straps are needed). There is debate about which method is better. Both have been used very successfully by many people.
The technique isn't wrong, or dangerous, nor do the poles cause blisters :o) Thousands have enjoyed Tom Rutlin's well-researched technique since the 80's. The strapless poles encourage a straighter elbow, enabling you to utilize more of the large muscle groups in your back and core. Old techniques aren't necessarily better -- just different. :o) Look how much techniques and equipment have changed over the years in other sports!

Those are NOT Nordic Walking Poles. The handles are totally wrong. You will end up with blisters all over your hands.
