If I filter the water through a sand gravity filtration system BEFORE chlorination, would that eliminate parasites or would boiling still be necessary? If boiling is still necessary, people are going to be hard pressed to do that if they don't have power without risking burning down their home. Cooking without power if you're stuck in your house hasn't been covered in any prepping video I've yet seen. It'd be nice to see that addressed.

It is dangerous to drink distilled water, because all the minerals are removed and you need some of those in the water. In Submarines for example where they distill whater they add those minerals after distilling.

Hey you say to boil the water for 10 minutes, I heard just to bring it up to a Boil then take it off. How did you come up with 10 minutes?

@cheeple Its a rule of thumb that works. Some ppl cannot tell what is a rolling boil so 10 minutes is a sure way to not screw it up.

I'd be careful with putting anything hot that you are going to consume in plastic.

I've been taught hot food or water (anything you're going to consume) should not come in contact (while its hot or being heated) with plastic. Glass and stainless steel I hear are about the best.

Dropping a pure silver coin in the water slowly releases silver particles into the water purifying it. Silver kills all types of bacterial similar to how colloidal silver solution works.

I have a question im very into this because if something should go down i have 2 kids to think of as well...so say ii want to store water in an old cleaned out 2liter soda bottle i know its 2 drops of bleach per quart but how many days weeks or months would this water be good for?

I store our treated water for about 9 months, then rotate it out (dump it out and refill with new, treated, water). I have heard of some ppl storing water for a year +. I would definitely change water after 12 months for sure.

To help with that dont rotate all your water at once - get a system where you can rotate so many gallons each month, that way you have a constant and fresh rotation.

@SafeArmsReview would your distillation method remove 100% fluoride from tap water? what about other heavy metals etc ..Is this as good as those expensive distillers and reverse osmosis systems etc as far as purity ? Bleach kills lots of bad things in the water & is useful for long term storage. You have to remember there is not one 'silver bullet' for water treatment & storage - these steps are the basics that everyone has access to.

If an emergency arises, its better to be prepared before hand than found wanting later on.

Bleach also acts like a preservative when you are wanting to store water. For example, when well water is stored for long amounts of time...it can develop some really bad tastes and smells, such as a strong sulfur smell. The addition of bleach prevents that problem from happening.

You say "remember gotta be safe" but there is so much you leave out- like the fact that you shouldn't be using aluminum to boil your water in. Remember It's aluminum that causes dementia & Alzheimer's disease. It really can be toxic when used in cookware; but if you're wondering why we have aluminum cans food & soda, you're wondering why they are poisoning us. Which is a good thing. I'm trying to figure it out as well. It's evil but it's cheap!

Why is boiling the best way of purifying? Won't fractional distillation take out everything except for water?

For the filter, I thought it would be safer if you were taking the soil from somewhere very deep. But won't the failout be everywhere anyway?

boiling kills all the germs & bad stuff and everyone is able to do it (not everyone can do fractional distillation). Been to a bunch of survival classes and all say boiling, so I am going to follow their lead.

Fallout falls on the top of the soil so u just dig down a bit (IOW its not everywhere). Besides if you really want to be prepared have soil stored & ready beforehand.

the survival classes I attended & my military training - they said to filter the water for fallout then treat the water (boiling, bleach, iodine, etc).

I have not heard distilling is a 'silver bullet' for everything. It could be if you did not filter the water, you have the problem of radioactive fallout & dealing w/ that clean up; IOW the contamination of fallout w/out filtering could spread to areas u dont want it to be - pots, pans, ur home, etc.

Best bet is to filter then treat.

well you have a good source of water, but for long term storage you still need to treat it as my vids show. Treating it is a preventive measure to ensure germs and other stuff does not contaminate it.

With the distilled water, couldn't you get more DLM ( distilled liter per min.) lol, but wouldn't adding some cool water on top of the lid help to collect the vapors quicker.

yes the difference between the boiling water & the cool h20 would help a lot.

I couldnt do that cause the lid I have has a pressure relief cap (IOW all the cool water would pour into the pot).
