Maybe I shouldn't have watched this video during my early stages of interest in fly fishing. I predict this will be me in the future. I got snagged by an ole timer once in windy conditions. Nipped me on the way back and caught my arm on the forward. Still gonna try it though.
@crutch37 if you can place yourself so the wind is comming in on the arm that are pulling the line, then its actually a good help to keep the hook on distance and it adds a little more distance to your throw. good luck.
Been there, done that, caught my cap, my back, got everything entangled in the rod (which is funny when fishing with a team of 3), caught my own fly line, stepped on the line... Although frankly I can do all these WITHOUT wind !
It also helps to use a more rigid rod, try using an 8 or even a 9 wt. on a windy day. It truly makes a huge difference. It might not be the best fight, but you'll probably cast a little better with heavier line weight on a windy day, until you learn a little more anyway.
Behave like a rock, live like a rock, perhaps things will happen too you not with you ... maybe wade a bit and move into another position? ... think there's an old saying about bending with the wind? ... might mean buying some waders - not sure that fits with my zen bullshit?
If the wind's really pumping - turn around and throw it with your back cast. In this case he'd need to get off that little rock first. An excellent vid for showing the advantages of being able to cast properly...
use your intuition with wind problems. everybody faces that same thing experienced or not. try casting across your body: meaning instead of casting on your right side if you are right handed switch casting arm to the left of your body and casting the same. dont switch hands just just switch the side your casting on. it prevents you from putting a hook in you chin or other parts of yourself.
For amateur fisherman, I'd just give the advice that if the wind is being troublesome, put down your rod and come back when it's died down.
There's no need to get frustrated and potentially damage your rod or injure yourself.
Plus, you can always go to an area off the water with less wind to practice hauling and other techniques for combatting the wind until you feel confident you're ready to cast.
I think that everybody who has cast a fly rods more than a few times can relate to his experiences, but most of us didn't have a camera recording our mistakes.
I'm like that now! First time i have fished in the wind today and it was raining too. We got to the river at 6am and at 7.15am i had to take my friends fly out of his eye!!! Luckily it didn't hook his eye but sat between his eyelid and his eye. Very lucky escape so we put our glasses on but spent all day pulling the fly out of our coats and hats Oh and we caught nothing too but still...a good day.
Never tried fly fishing myself..yet. I was wondering though with all that loose line by him if he hooked into a decent fish isnt there a chance the line could snag on rocks or even tangle in his legs or something?
Nar happens to all of us beginners and or experienced.Ya think the winds behind you all the time then it changes. The fly line plus fly can and or does come right back at ya.always wear a hat and sunnies.I've seen a 75 year old fly flicker have this happen to him.A 12# Woolly Bugger past the Barb in his Eye Lid.3 hour drive to Hospital...no more fishing...and of course they were on.
today i was casting , and the fly came so close to my face i could feel the feathers, lol

Or save yourself for a nice day.

The best wind for r/handers is the wind that comes from over your left shoudler.
Casting into a wind is a waste of time and energy.

I'm no amateur, and I do that a time or two every year. Just something that happens from time to time when you're not paying attention...

Hauling can acclerate the line to 90+ mph.
PLEASE wear some sort of eye protection. I can GUARANTEE that sooner or later, you are going to send a hook into one of your orbits.
