  • some people just forget that only straight grooving is a pretty boring thing for drummer at this level.

Furthermore some things wont be musical for your ears if you dont understand them.

  • Funny how people are claiming it not to be musical while it's extremely groovy. Latin clave all over the place.

  • wonder why his cympals is so high above the drum kit - playing drums should not be a stretching excersise

  • @cyberspace123 he said in another video that he keeps the cymbal high above the kit because it looks good...and the extra excersize keeps him skinny

  • hahaha virgil donati....

  • I can't really see the meaning of all the complaining, I mean.. Sure I understand if people who don't understand drumming cannot comprehend this. But honestly, his style is quite unique compared to all the amazing virtuosos from the western world. His technique is off the roof. I personally found this clip extremely interesting and entertaining.

  • well no one else has style like akira jimbo!!! he's very very one of a kind.which is very good but of course not everyone can understand his style! still if not for his uniqueness he would not be the akira jimbo he is know as today!

  • i agree not musical at all, in fact i find this extreamely annoying ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • noone is going to like this but this is the reason japanese people shouldnt drum. this guy is probably one of the best in japan but while obviously extrimely technically impressive i nearly fell asleep watching it. just something completely missing.

  • @heinzie5 watch a video of the band Toe or Mouse on the Keys, and you will change your mind about Japanese drummers

  • see, drinking sake really loosens you up!

  • This is groovy as hell.

  • this man's brain has 4-limb independance, as well as his limbs. untouchable, I found a new/old drum inspiration.

  • Delightfully kaotic

  • I've met Akira and even played on his kit. He grooves like crazy, but he exemplifies a Japanese tradition of perfection and to some it may sound mechanical. His time is excellent and the music he plays and creates is intend to be mechanical sounding. Thats his style, and nobody else sounds like him.

  • NICE!

  • ppl soloing on drums like this dosent have to have "grooving" or a constant beat. its about listening to the pocket he plays in and watching his coordination and technique take hold.

  • Not grooving or musical? Stick your head in a deep fryer, then tell us how it sounds.

  • his demonstration of advanced polyrythms is wildly impressive. i but i'll have to agree with some people on the lack of musicality. i mean no disrespect in any form, Jimbo is still very amazing.

  • This rules!

  • Check some Horacion Hernandez stuff out on youtube and you'll see what I mean

  • The thing is that you have to listen to this in the right context. Once you put some latino flavour to it and the right people playing then you get amazing stuff :)

  • Hello, I'm Akira Jimbo. I'm better than all of you guys. I'm also a multi-instrumentalist, and I was 18 when I started. Yet, I own every single one of you out there. I can play entire musical pieces with my triggered sounds, I've speed, dynamics, independence, all the technique in the world. As well as groove and phrasing abilities, in ALL genres! So, just quit drums, sell your kit on ebay or just give it to me, because you'll never be like me. I'm on a throne.

    -Akira Jimbo

    <3 this dude

  • @ryder187mac Lol when did he say that?? And if he said that he's stupid, learning music or any instrument is'nt about being better than someone it about having fun and enjoying it. And if he said that he's doing it wrong.

  • @Mrdrumer0000 lol, of course he didn't :p I was just making a little joke :)

  • @ryder187mac Good thing i have have a sence of humer lol.

  • how the fuck did an asian guy afford drum sticks?

  • It's beautiful, but it's not drumming in support of something else - it's a piece in and of itself, sometimes emphasizing a groove, something flourishing: so it isn't for everybody, but the fluidity of his playing is simply stunning.

  • Ok, if it was all just him, and there wasn't some percussion player elsewhere doing the clave thing at some points; then that's about as incredible as a human can possibly be.

  • @CusterFlux dude, you really need to watch some of his other videos, it is all him. In some of his other videos he actually explains it. the Clave isnt being played by anyone else. You can also tell if you REALLY watch his left foot

  • he would make for a very good afro cuban jazz drummer

  • Naaah if you could just listen latin music a little bit more you'll understand what he's doing! yeeeah!

  • AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Reminds me of terry sorta.

  • i dont come on here to see something played that 95% of drummers can do.THIS is why i view this stuff.THIS is techique shown at its best.Lang,Weckl, and others may not groove all the time in these but they're not trying to.i want to see things that are hard to challenge me,if i can learn 1 of the things i hear ,i'll be a better player.

  • one of the dopest things i've ever seen. :o

  • hes just hitting a lot of stuff with technique

  • feeling what music?

  • i thought hacking real life was impossible. this guy is fucking insane.

  • Ahh i love this guy! You can tell he enjoys playing. Look at his face! Genuine.... =P ditto Heholdthecoma

  • The cymbal he strikes last in 1:14, what is that one called? awesome sound

  • splash

  • and it sounds very thin.

  • @henkepenk93

they are all k custom hybrids. just different variations. he helped design them.

  • This guy is obviously feeling the music, you can see it on his face!

  • o my god that left foot clave is insane

  • Hacker. Good timing but still hacking away.

  • Holy Crap Independance!

  • yeah. i just checked out keith carlock ( thanks for the recommendation) and its a good thing yamaha also endorses him cuz he has enough funk to make up for jimbo

  • check out his work with casiopeia! that has enough funk to make up for all anybody's done since the dawn of time! first after that you're allowed to post a comment like that!

  • i dont know, he obviously has chops out the ass and perfect timing but, it still doesn't move me. his solos sound like lots of unrelated ideas strung together fast and loud. on a separate note, i hate listening to left foot woodblock solos. i dont care if they're hard to play, i think they sound annoying. i respect akira for being who he is, but his style just sounds wack to me

  • solo over left foot clave, thats wild

  • If you can't hear groove in his soloing then you don't know what you're listening for. He has incredible time.

  • 日本一だ

    いや世界一

  • うまくても叩いてる姿はあまりかっこよくない

    世界一なら4.5の評価はないだろ

  • This doesn't move me.

  • 我喜歡他打鼓時很享受的表情^^

  • Very different style...................

  • Jimo is the man!!

  • Very dynamic, i luv it

  • hmm.. it might be hard to play the stuff he does here.. but I would not want to anyway!...

Sorry.. this is just not grooving one bit to my ears!?.. am I the only one thinking this way?.. It sounds like he's just hitting everything i random order.. might be advanced stuff.. but musical.. hmm.. not to my ears..

This is not meant in a bad way.. i just don't get this kind of drumming.. no disrespect intended!

  • he's demonstrating 4 wat independance i think. listen to the jam block throught. its playing the smae thing while he's doing all that with his hands. its not easy. but no not very musical

  • guy its called a 2/3 clave (clav-eh) that hes playing on the block. its a cuban beat and pretty much all cuban songs are written off the base of a clave, if you were to play a drum solo off a clave instead of a metronome, you'd feel alot more creative, i suggest trying it, cheers!

  • @plopenstien Solos aren't supposed to be very musical.

  • Oh man I love you! It really reassures me to see that some people actually see the drums as an instrument and not something to display tricks. This solo is really boring! I suggest you check out keith carlock if you don't already know him, hes does grooves solos and hes awesome

  • i think so too, but thats just the intro

  • @henrikrathje agreed. The block thing was nice. A bit like Steve Gadd getting the crowd to clap for him, but other then that he does seem like he's just hitting stuff.

  • @henrikrathje I agree with you completely. I have always felt that way about Jimbo. He does NOT suck by any means, but his play style just does not express anything I can connect to

  • @henrikrathje

You need to listen to it as 1 whole thing, and not as 4 independence things.

Short said, you need to listen better, and it grooves.

  • @henrikrathje to me it grooves. its like a bunch of people playing individual instruments to my ears (without watching)

  • @henrikrathje Post your work show us how it's done properly! KOOK!

  • @henrikrathje hey it could be worse, travis barker for example

  • @henrikrathje Me neither....

  • The only problem with Arika Jimbo Rod Morgenstein and many other Vic Firth endorsers is that they endorse Vic Firth. Gimme promark or Vater any day of the week

  • one may wonder why a japanese drummer uses yamaha drums (look at the bass drum logo)

  • Triplets between toms and bass to double paradiddles. That was sick

  • UFFFFFFFFF que chimbaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • man this is the first time i've heard akira jimbo properly and maaan, i have underrated him!! legend

  • I thinks his toms sound a bit plasticish

    Nice playing anyways :)

  • that's a yamaha for ya!

  • yep i think the chokes are too much, but NICE to everything else.

  • Holy crap...he has too many fuckin' coordination

  • could you do any better?

  • what do you mean?

  • im saying its an awesome video but i could have done with out some of the cymbal choaks

  • the cymbal chokes do take away from the playing. but akira jimbo can do whatever he wants, theres no rules for drumming.
