I will think about these fine souls as I eat my kiwi fruit in the morning. A few tips to the workers 1) Don't get hing up eating at McDonald's, that crap will clog your blood veins and put you in the grave early. 2) Even if you don't believe what the preacher is laying out--ACT LIKE YOU ARE TOTALLY IN TUNE with the religious offerings.
3) Don't steal anything. They are probably watching you to shake you loose from your hard earned money.
You said they felt exploited - well they probably are. From what I hear the employers charge like wounded bulls for accomodation and other costs. Instead of $13.50 an hour they insist on 'contract' rates which means because of weather and type of fruit they can go as low as .50c per hour. Apple growers are notorious for it - insisting that workers only pick the right fruit from a particular row of trees etc. Its no wonder kiwis don't want to do it. Muggins islanders...
i work with many vanuatuans doing seasonal works in NZ. many felt exploited by agents, pay a premium for accommodation, air fare etc. food on their own. minimum wage $13.5 (about $11.5 after tax) if paid by the hour. contract rate would depend on their speed. mostly paid as promised except days of bad weather or low season.
the islanders are very family orientated and they don't integrate well; most would go back than overstay. but they are nice and friendly bunch. church attendance optional.
I don't think this program provides a permanent solution. It's a manifestation of accumulation by dispossession being implemented via policy programming. Sure, perhaps there will be short term gain. More than likely, it won't be sustainable.
i hope the govt does a better job than turning on the taps of importing island workers as pre 1974.then a downturn in employment. panic.and a laughable r eaction (if you wernt an islander) dawn rades , forgoten? then watch u tube "the dawn rade aftermath" by autunitv
I agree, i dont reckon that the workers should have to pay for half of their airfares, accommodation, food, water ect the company should have to take care of that. Bigger picture is, that the company is getting the better deal and makeing it look as though their doing the workers a favour (which they probly are, dont get me wrong). I just hope that the workers are being treated fairly and are not being exploited...
And DONT get me started with all of that over OTT christian BS lol
Well, at least its better than employing illegal immigrants.
$12 an hour is minimum wage here in New Zealand which I think is fair.
Although I do question other aspects of the program such as, will the workers have to pay for things such as rent, food etc.? If so then $12 an hour is not a heck of a lot.
Oh, GAWD! I can't believe that they use it as an opportunity to evangelize a religion that many of them might not care for. Hopefully, it's not a requirement for all such groups, and hopefully it will become an option for each individual to attend or not. Overall, it appears exploitation for most. The ploy of having them pay for some of their travel, accommodations and upkeep is to, in effect, reduce their wages while at the same time reducing state/company/org liability if problems arise.
@BigMTBrain the evangelization thing is what pizzes me off the most.clearly they subscribe into this notion that no other religion is better than xtianis.
Wow, what a shit stupid story. No one states the obvious reason why no one wants to pick fruit.... Those tight fucken farmers and agribusiness cunts don't want to pay what the labour is worth. They make me sick.
@groundnpounder same old story of the rich getting richer whilst using the poor to do their work! Add to that the evangelisation of the workers and the last bit of insult to injury: making these workers pay for 1/2 their trip, WATER FOR SHOWERS and who knows what other "fees" spring up as time goes by. Same bullshit as before, different ways of going about it. Good enough to come over and pick fruits, but I wonder if they will let them stay in NZ if the workers ask for it???
Thanks to NZ people & govt

Brilliant idea - we should do this in Australia!
Look at these men. Do you really believe that they want to hang around and overstay their visa? No! They want to get home to their wife and children!
