@jayhawk88z I don't think anyone would deny that they had some talent on the team but how does anyone they had compare to the likes Gretzky, Messier, Kurri, Coffey, or Anderson? ALL Hall of Famers now and the there is not one Flyer from that team in the NHL Hall of Fame…although an argument could be made for a couple of them. That's the point.
All one needs to do is watch these videos to see how outplayed and out matched they were.
BTW, It was Kjell Samuelsson on that team not Ulf.
Amazing upload. Love seeing these comprehensive game highlights. I've been trying to find examples of great Gretzky passes, they are hard to find on youtube. Your videos have alot of examples.
@lofemofe Thanks. Glad I could help in your search.
Although it is kind of hard to appreciate with the pixelated YouTube video quality, I think the best pass Gretzky made in this series was at 3:47 of this game 1 video. He takes a pass wrapped around the boards to him and with one motion of his skate hits Coffey on the tape who is all the way out in the slot between the face off circles. That is just unreal presence of mind and accuracy to make that kind of pass with his skate. He is the best.
Technically, because it helps to evoke the mood and tell the story of what is happening in the game at the time. When was the last time you went to a hockey game and they played highlights in the arena without being accompanied by music? Never. When was the last time you went to see a movie and there was no music in it to help to accentuate the mood of what was going on? Never.
Why you ask? Because it is more entertaining and cinematic with the music and is MUCH less so without it.
Too bad the guy who posted these videos....(if he hasn't already)...could post highlights from the playoffs series for each team, leading up to the Stanley Cup finals
I unfortunately did not tape every game of each other series that year. What I did post was a medley of the ESPN highlights of each series. Look in my videos, It is called "1987 Philadelphia Flyers' Road to the Finals"
Sorry, that was me who just replied! I have two accounts and forgot I was logged into the other one. The feeback and reaction I got from my "Ron Hextall Career Highlights Music Video" prompted me to create a separate page for this kind of Flyers stuff. IOf you have not seen that one please check it out. You won't be disappointed!
Crawford1987: So, in retrospect, you could make the argument that the Flyers spent far fewer minutes than the Canadiens at even strength and still managed almost as many even strength goals for them. Unreal. Thats the second miningful stat. The last one of course is goaltending. You put this kind of Flyer team `playing` for Bernie (recovering from a back injury suffered during training camp, September 1975) in the finals with number 30 (Parent) healthy and the Flyers win the Cup in 6 games.
Crawford1987: a few more things to take into consideration. The Flyers were a naughty team, they took many liberaties with their opponents and spent tons of time in the penalty box. In fact, the 75-76 Flyers had 480 power play opportunities against, compared to only 290 for the Canadiens. Both teams had almost the same power play opportunites (290 for Philly and 282 for Canadiens).
Crawford1987: dont mind the GF I wrote, I was starting a new sentence but I ran out of real estate LOL. OK, most of the game is played at even strength, so if you look at the Goals For-Against ratio in this area of the game, the Flyers are actually the better team (Flyers: 251 divided by 122 equals 2.06, Canadiens: 255 divided by 130 equals 1.96). OK, so pretty close but the Flyers were still better. They doubled up on their opponents at even strength. Unbelievable. Few teams have done this.
Cups the Flyers should have had: 1976, 1980, 1985, 1987 and 1997. its too bad because the Flyers really had a great team during those years 1975 thru the late 90's. It sucks to see how a great team cannot win the big prize at least once during that time. Just like the Bruins though, a terrible spell of either bad luck or bad timing. Great video! Well done!
I am still not so sure about '85 and I am really scratching my head about why you would include '97. The whole team came up short in the finals. Especially big #88 who was a complete no show. They were not even in that series being swept in 4 games. They may have had a great regular season and a nice run but they certainly did not deserve a cup that year. The rest I would agree with! Those teams "should" have had one!
1976 belonged to the Canadiens...they were a very talented team. Even though Bernie Parent was out of the series, due to injury, I doubt the Flyers would have won considering they were up against Gui Lafleur, Steve Shutt, etc...1980 was a Cup they could have had, if not for that offsides that was never called. 1985 and 1997 they were smoked and didn't deserve to win it all. If luck was on their side, I believe they could have won in 1980,87, and maybe 76. Oh well, keep moving forward..
I am not so sure about what you say about the 76 team. Have you looked at the Flyers statistics and record that year? Even without Bernie they were one of the most dominant teams in the league and maybe even the world given they just beat the Russians that year. Didn't the Russians beat the Canadians that year? I think if Bernie was in net it would have been a much different series.
85 & 97 I totally agree with you. They did not play well enough to say they deserved it. They didn't.
The CSKA fought the Canadiens to a 3-3 tie on Dec 31, 1975 in the famous New Years game at the Forum in Montreal. They were badly outshot and only poor goaltending by Ken Dryden allowed the Russians to tie the game.
Sorry Dave, I meant New Years Eve game, not New Years game. Yes the 76 Flyers did beat the lame Russians 4-1 in that classic game. The Russians didnt know what hit them that night. The Flyers were a damn good team that year and theres no question they would have defeated the Canadiens in the final with a HEALTHY Bernie Parent. Dryden was a mere shadow of Parent. Can you imagine how well Parent would had played in front of the Canadiens All-Star defence. Not that the Flyers d-men were bad.
This was a remarkable series, one which I still watch over and over again to this day. Awesome job on the videos. Are you doing more Oiler tribute videos liek these?
Actually, they were intended to be more of Flyers tribute videos. I am glad you said that though. I tried to be as unbiased as I could so the fact that you saw it that way lets me know that I succeeded.
To answer your question. I have plenty of clips I am planning on uploading but no plans for more like this at the moment.
This collection of videos got me really pumped up. But, it makes me sad too, as a flyers fan, lol. Man, if only the Flyers hadn't have had to run into the Edmonton Oilers. The Flyers were every bit as worthy of winning the Cup as the 74/75 teams...their timing was just terrible, and had the misfortune of being decimated by injuries to key players(namely Tim Kerr). Regardless, the Flyers put up the most valiant effort possible, and with a few bounces their way, who knows what might have happened
That is why merely looking at the stats of this series does not begin to tell you the whole story. If you were only to look at the shots per game on paper you would think "gee it was pretty even." But then when you watch it you see much differently and how Hextall faced breakaway after breakaway after odd man rush. Only then do you begin to see the whole story. On paper a 40ft shot and a breakaway each only count as one shot. Shame we can't find scoring chance info back then. Tnks 4 the comment!
So that's it hu? After one of the best playoff series of all time with Keenan coaching his team to the the 7th and deciding game against just about the best team ever assembled and more importantly after TWENTY ONE YEARS. The best you can come up with is "Haha Keenan. You Lose"?
How long did it take you to come up with that? Moreover did it hurt?
What one must remember is that Keenan accomplished MUCH more in that loss than Sather and Muckler did in their win!

Now why would you go and dub silly music over top of perfectly good highlights? Why not let the game speak for itself?

As an audio junkie, I have to ask again: what song did you use for the intro while the text was scrolling?
And who was that saying "We can't worry about Grant Fuhr?"

The dude a few comments down in his essay said ... number 30 (Parent)..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Bernie Parent wore number 1, not number 30.
ECWnWWF 2 years ago
That is correct. Bobby Taylor wore #30. Why do you ask?

Crawford1987: I have some stats you want to see. Just to prove my point that the Flyers were a better team in 76 than the Canadiens.
75-76 Flyers: 51-13-16,118PTS,348GF,209GA
GF distribtion-83PP,14SH,251EV
GA distribution-83PP,4SH,122EV
75-76 Canadiens: 58-11-11,127PTS,337GF,174GA
GF distribution-75PP,7SH,255EV
GA distribution-44PP,0SH,130EV
Now the key here is even strength goals. Thats where most of the game is played anyway. More on this on my next post...
