There is a distinct warbling artifact in the audio of this clip, but it's hard to know whether that's in the original recording, or an artifact of a bad conversion by YouTube.
I'm less impressed with the video quality from this camera than with the Creative Vado. This one seems to have slightly better light level handling, and deeper colour saturation, but has markedly more encoding artifacts - either because of a lower bitrate, or an inferior encoder.
Without the zoom lens this type of device reminds me of the basic 8mm camera of my youth. The lack of zoom seems to make for better picture making because there is the missing distraction of the zoom.
Hi. Just read the piece in the Guardian. Thanks for that, we are away on Hols on Tuesday so are buying the Flip at short notice. The example on youtube has been helpful.
The colour on this is better than the Vado (seems washed out) but the sound isn't so good (not great on either really!)
I guess quality is not the most important thing with these devices though...
Are you knowledgeable about consumer videocameras? I own the Canon HV20 which is rather spiffy - hard drive and dvd cameras don't really offer much at the moment as the compression is less than MiniDV.
Stephen! I love you! I can't believe my luck. You are wonderful, hooking us up with all this information. I have Yahoo! Alerts set up so that I get an email any time you're mentioned in the news or on an online vehicle like Dork Talk. Bless you, Stephen. xoxoxo loni
Yes, you're right. very hard to decide which is best. The Flip uses ordinary batteries which is an advantage if you're travelling far from your computer. The Vado charges its battery via USB.I thknk I'd go for either, but if pushed, the Vado -- so you did well! Sx
Which do you prefer the Vado or Flip? It seems to be a lottery as to whether ones video comes up well on here regardless of what you use to shoot it with. Your vado footage looks a bit clearer and has the 'watch in high quality' button and this one didn't. Again, this seems to be a random bit of luck when one uploads a video.
Althoug I do have the Flip I prefer to use my Vado!!

The lighting and sound seem very bad in comparison to the Vado.

The Flip clip looks better than the Vado clip. But neither looks particularly good.

The sound quality on this seems not so hot - or are my ears playing tricks? Wouldn't be the first time; tricky things, ears.
