  • who said white guy's don't no how to play the blue's

  • thats solid drumming...right in the pocket....

  • @ChiroQuacker he stated in his autobiography that jim gordon was the best drummer he ever worked with...

  • @michaelbillypec

poor jimmy went mad...but he was great! micky jones who played on dylan '66 tour was great too..

  • im so glad they made this record

  • rock on forever.

  • @TheOneThatGetsIt people from this generation is so fucked up, i'm dissapointed with myself

  • I wore the cassette out when I first heard this. Awesome blues track.

  • @TheOneThatGetsIt I dunno about better than sex... But sex to this would be awesome

  • 3 people were looking for Beiber?

  • ésta lección gratis de guitarra es de Eric Clapton por si habían dudas de su virtuosismo!!!!!!!!!! él tiene la llave

  • anyone who is familiar with Duane Allman's unique slide style should be able to pick out his runs and flavor all through this groove, on his 1953 goldtop les paul same with "Layla" and "Little Wing" he the one one top with higher slide notes, only Dicky Betts can match his licks, if you liked this you will like this song as well, LMAO, i don't why youtube sez there erroe in their own link, but it's "Allman Brothers / Stormy Monday" @ Filmore version

  • This album was out of print for a whille in the late 70's early 80's. I had to have it. I placed it on a hit list at the local used record store. The call came on a Fiday about 3 pm, after school. Biked my pimply butt over there and placed 8 dollars on the counter for a pristine, cellophane enveloped, double fold, thick press 2- disc album. I still put it on once in a while, plug in the old Paul, and try to keep up.

  • @2soakers

I picked it up at a used record store in 1979, when I was 15 cause I couldn't find it anywhere. Inspired me to by a Les Paul copy. A classic for it's time, what a time to grow up if you loved the Rockin Blues guys, Allman Brothers, Stones..........

  • This was an 'almost didn't happen song' The sound engineer hit record when they heard them jamming, someone down the hall was recording this song and they decided to give it a go.

Maybe my favorite song off the album. What an amazing lineup.

  • @GregTheBunny100 That's very cool. I did not know that they were just jamming and messing around. Thank God for the engineer.

  • Now THIS is some heavy rockin' stuff right here, the ultimate! I wonder who the fuck are the 3 jerks who dislike it.

  • クラプトンは剃刀、デュアンは鉈、切り裂くのか一刀両断か?~いずれにしろ"KEY TO THE HIGHWAY"の強力ソロ合戦!(特上)

  • D & the D's were key to my soul at the time these came out.. I had them on 8-track.

  • @maggi711993 "Derek" playing Brownie thru a little Champ amp to get that painful, dirty, beautiful sound! Love it!

  • Clapton from 2:45-3:25 ----- 5:45-6:50 blows the roof off

  • *****

  • when this first came out could'nt stop listening 2 it glad i grow up with all the greatist guitarist

  • These boys own the highway.

  • It has been said that Duane Allman was a better guitar player than Eric Clapton rating second to only Jimi Hendrix. Whatever the case may be, he must have been something else.

  • " Eric was playing the rhythm while Duane played the lead and then they would switch roles.""Our vocals worked great as usual, and the whole band was really excited on that night. A big part of that was because Duane was with us and we felt complete. That was the balancing factor with our record, a combination of Duane and Eric's unique styles with a combination that was respectful and worked as one." Bobby Whitlock A Rock~n~Roll Autobiography

  • personally, I like Derek Trucks and it would be nice if he and Eric did an album together and/or a tour of the US. I quit going to concerts when they started reaching a hundred dollars a ticket, but I may pay to see them together Last Clapton concert I saw was with the Impressions. Haven't been to one since. I've seen most of the goods ones one or two times in the 70's and 80's.

  • Fly free bird Fly!!!

  • Duane Allman is the Bird man....a.k.a. the FREE BIRD....

  • @maggi711993 When Asked who played what...Allman said I play the Gibson he plays the Fender...and as far as amps go..They had the little Fender Champs they put up behind each other..That is what they used...

  • This drummer is rediculous. Way too smooth.

  • @radarman818 Google Jim Gordon and see his list of albums he played on....Lost his mind and killed his mother with a hammer...He is still in the mental institution for the criminally insane..

  • This tune knocks my boots!

  • Cleartwater> If you listen to Key to the highway you can hear Duane playing in the background and he comes in at 4:14, 6:56 and 8:00. 8:00 is the most special solo I have ever heard. You can't miss the slide action its beyond belief. By the way, why is everyone calling Duane Allman Skydog. His real nickname is Skyman from Wilson Pickett who said "He plays like a man reaching for the sky". Skyman is fitting for Duane Allman. Any responses?

  • @Cleartwater Hey Bro....... just looked up some stuff....."Many consider "Skydog" a variant of the nickname "Skyman" given to him by Wilson Pickett during the recording of Pickett's cover of the Beatles' "Hey Jude." You sure are right. Regardless this guy could play. Thanks for sharing!!!!!

  • @warr0950 Cleartwater here. A few other songs to listen to are "Loan Me A dime, "I Must Have done Somebofy Wrong",the original "Midnight Rider" with Duane playing and "Statesboro Blue:. Supreme slide action. A little know fact is that Eric Clapton attended a concert of the Allman Brothers just to see Duane play. He sat off stage on the right and just sat in awe of this guy playing. It was in 1970 and the start of Derek and the Dominos. Good to hear from another Duane Allman devoted fan. Clearwtr

  • @Cleartwater Yep Tom Dowd took EC to see the ABB play down in Florida..They crawled down in the front..Duane had his eyes closed, when he looked up and saw Clapton he froze. Clapton wanted to hear Duane because he heard his lead ride on 'HEY JUDE" by Wilson Pickett...

  • @warr0950 Cleartwater here. A few other songs to listen to are "Loan Me A dime, "I Must Have done Somebody Wrong",the original "Midnight Rider" with Duane playing and "Statesboro Blue:. • i would give up 5yrs pay just to go back and set in and listen to Duane and Eric play together

  • This will always be my favorite blues song. Not just because it's awesome but I saw both Clapton and B.B. King play this at two completely different concerts.

  • nice song, i was looking for little walter when i found this

  • We'll miss you Duane. God knows I do.

  • Fillmore east was the best live recording ever produced. Please listen to One way Out and you cna definitely hear Duane come in for a shot solo after Dicky Betts plays most of the song from the beginning. When Skyman comes in for a short solo, The whole place blew apart when Duane took center stage and played like a whinny dog. Just supurb and recording history. Cleartwater.

  • I appreciate the e-mail from another Duane Allman fan. Key to the Highway is a superb accomplishment of Duane's Slide action. I am 62 and was at Fillmore East in 1971. The extreme playing of Duane really was perfect. The greatest Live Album of all time is fitting for Duane. Slide guitar is a unique playing ability and no one has evere come close to Duane Allman. Key to the Highway is one of the best examples of slide playing also One Way Out. Superb playing in a short solo. Clearwater.

  • @Cleartwater 60 myself Cleartwater. Guess it takes us old timers to appreciate some great music. One Way Out is out of this world. I was stationed in Jacksonville from 70 - 76. Listened to and loved the Southern Rock sound that Duane ushered in. Rock on!

  • @Cleartwater I was in the Navy in the mid 70's and we had people from all over where I was stationed so we heard a lot of different groups. I think we wore a hole through the Fillmore East 8 track. It definitely got me into Southern rock though I knew about them through WNEW FM. The Allmans started it all and were great, but in truth I like Skynyrd and the Outlaws better. IMO, the Allmans weren't the same after Duane died. As to Key, this is my favorite D&D track.

  • 3 people obviously hit the wrong button above! How else could you explain anybody disliking this?

  • Eric Clapton = God Duane Allman = God

Eric Clapton + Duane Allman = Error 501 or the Best Blues improvisation ever recorded!!!

  • @guilhermevideira17 Isn't that the truth!!!!!!!!

  • The extreme slide guitar that Duane plays talks to you of you really listen. He was the master of the slide guitar and before fillmore east he only played slide for two month, When Gregg stated he was the best dam guitar player he had ever seen, he was most correct. Also listen to One Way Out and you can hear Duane come in with a shot solo with that Whinny Dog Sound that was only his. The best guitar player theat ever lived.

  • @Cleartwater Rock on Sky Dog! I sure do agree!!!!!!!! Allman was the best.

  • Duane Allman was the master of Key to the hIghway. You can even hear Eric Clapton applaud Duane by yelling twice in the song when Duane takes the slide guitar to another level and Clapton does not believe anyone can play a slide so dam good it just blew him away. Key to the highway is the height of Duane's short career.

  • Miss ya Duane.....

  • It simply does not get any better than this

  • It doesn't get any better..

  • clapton rule's so much

    i just can bellive it.

fucking awsome song never seen in all music history.

  • EC knocks a sweet lick from Blackie starting at 6:05 ...and elsewhere thruout the tune, but this one is worthy of the Beano days.

  • @strandwolf He's playing Brownie, actually. :p

  • @evanguy LOL, I figured it was likely one or t'other, anyway.

  • @evanguy Is that the sunburst strat?

  • @mrslollipop13 Hey. That looks just like MY Strat! Hey! ERIC CLAPTON cut a record using MY guitar!! !;-) LOL!

  • Comment removed

  • @warr0950 Sure we know that, but Duane was playing slide, primarily, and on a humbucking Les Paul, producing a very different tone than what Clapton was getting on this same track. We were discussing Clapton's work on this, not Allman's.

  • @strandwolf But how could you not talk of Allmans Slide work.......... Just as exciting as Clapton's work. And both made the song.

  • @warr0950 Hey bro, Cleartwater here, Did you listen to Key to the Highway at 8:00 into the song. Duane takes the song to a new level and Clapton is great but it is easy to tell them apart since Duane is so clean in his work and Clapton is a little muddier but still supurb. You can really pick out Duane's playing on this cut. Its my favorite song the two of them battle during the song, and obviously Duane comes out on top. Later Bro. Cleartwater

  • @Cleartwater - Skydog was great but, I'll take Slow Hand!

  • @Cleartwater Duane is playing de verses from 4:14 to 4:36, from 4:37 to 4:58, from 5:22 to 5:43, from 8:01 to 8:23. These are simply unique, in every riff. He was playing with feeling, making Clapton to exclaim "wow" several times. Both are inspired and having fun. Great Duane.

  • @MrMuddymilton Duane is playing SLIDE guitar on a Gibson Les Paul and Clapton is playing an old 1956 Fender Strat (Brownie) and I remember reading in Cream magazine Duane being asking "who plays what?" and Duane said "I play a Gibson Les Paul all the way through and Eric plays a Fender Stratocaster so if you can tell the difference in the way those guitars sound you can tell who does what. If you can't then just enjoy the music and don't worry about it man". I thought that was odd

  • @warr0950 hurts to see this kind of comment re: Layla and all my favorites from "back then" i know quite a few guitar players my age who forget that so and so played on this or that album. Actually i had forgotten about allman's participation on layla which is especially ironic since the album introduced to me by a big allman brothers fan who knew i liked clapton music. i never met clapton or allman but some of their contemporaries - quiet sure they would not approve of "morons" comment

  • @verbenco If you didn't know Allman played on this. Then you were so young or so naive, or so in the back woods. Everyone Knew Allman played on Layla. Simple as that.

  • @warr0950 of course i was young and naive, also spent a lot of time in the back woods, i was not, however a pompous ass. but since you fail to appreciate nuance, i will spell it out for you. There exist many musicians for whom this sort of thing is unimportant. Many think the directors of the New York Philharmonic are more important names than Greg Allman or for that matter even Clapton. (Everyone knows it is currently Alan Gilbert) Your attitude is imperious and not worthy of a musician.

  • @strandwolf the lick betweek 6:28 and 6:38 is unreal

  • @pisstroll88 its like a knife going into your side. and than slowly being pulled out. ahah rock on man

  • @hhg61 - No, man, that's too painful and this song is anything but that! It's more like you're sitting home alone in a chair watching some garbage on TV and suddenly a superduper drop dead gorgeous woman you've never seen before comes in the door, gives you the greatest sex you ever had and then leaves suddenly leaving you dazed, happy and wondering "Did that really just happen?" Crazy, man, crazy!

  • @strandwolf In fact, EC knocks a sweet from ''Brownie''. Blackie came few years later. Those were the days

  • This is what i call "blues-rock".

  • has anyone tabbed this yet?

  • @maggi711993 That is Clapton. Duane Allman is playing the slide.

  • @evanguy Definitely a Fender Stratocaster single-coil pickup sound....

  • @evanguy Long Live SKYDOG!

  • One my all-time fav albums.

There are 14 songs and Duane appears on 11 of them.

He does NOT appear on 1) I Looked Away 2) Bell Bottom Blues and 3) Keep On Growing which where recorded on 9/1+2/1970.

    All other dates - 8/28 +31 and 9/3+4 , 9/9+10/1970 he gets credit for.

The signature song - Layla - was recorded 9/9 with overdubbes on 10/1/1970.

Just great any way you slice it.

  • wow fine guitars

  • same song but as covered by Mike Wilhelm who studied for years with Brownie McGHee and Mance Lipscomb, me on harp actual friend of Wolf and playing it

4 am in my sleep ;) Hyde St. Studios 1985 youtube.com/watch?v=6S1gGyB1_8A

  • The band broke broke up because Clapton was drugged out and hiding in the closet while Bobby Whitlock was knocking on his door. Johnny Walker and a bunch of pills with wild colors made this album.

This song is special because Clapton and Allman traded guitars and some magic happened. Walter Jacobs wrote this, and Freddy King did it better, but eventhough they missed the best 2 verses, this one is good too.

  • Dudes of all Dudes, Clapton loved Duane Allman like a brother and was in awe of his playing. He's was an officialk member of the Dominioes and would join them on tour in between Allman Bros. gigs. Tom Dowd would come in the studio and the entire band was passed out on junk. He told Clapton to get it together or he was leaving. They did mamage to finish the album. Clapton was a mess over Harrison's wife. This shit is 40 yrs old!! It's is timeless, powered by Gordon and Radle underneath.

  • what would you say your favorite album was that eric clapton has appeared in? any band

  • I think, this is the best album ever made

  • THE best version I've ever heard of " Key To The Highway " is on the Eric Clapton's Rainbow Concert album. Pete Townsend plays rhythm, Ronnie Wood plays slide ( and has a terrific solo ) and Clapton has no less than three passages where he just tears the roof off the place.

  • this is to naabjr this is the best clapton of key to the higway i dont care what u say the greatest album of all time

  • did they write this or was it someone else?

  • @yourown99

Key to the Highway was written by the great bluesman Big Bill Broonzy. My favourite version is by Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee. Check it out. The guitar is acoustic & the blues harp by Terry is so far out that you meet it on the way back.

  • I have loved Clapton since I was 12 , I said it then and now 42 yrs later I'll say it again

" I WOULD DRINK THAT MAN'S DIRTY BATH WATER"

My baby, I love that man they call Slow Hand. Yeah

  • This song begins to REALLY jam somewhere around 0:02

  • "Im gonna leave here running because walking is most too slow"

"You havent done nothing but drowe a good man away from home"

I guess that says it all

  • This song had been around a long time before I heard it on this album, but this is the only version I want to hear. Sounds like they're playing in my garage and I love it.

  • that maybe true but Duane Allman plays so good that most people just think that it is eric clapton. Not taking anything away from clapton at all i love both these guys

  • That is the best blues jam ever:)

  • @Gilk53 heard that Tom Dowd said hit the damn machine

  • @thfedexguy if you were any kind of fan and guitar player you would know who played what????

  • unproduced music, clapton, blues, a beer and the kids a sleep

    YEAH

  • wow,I got an auditory boner............

  • clapton and d. allman (among some others of their generation) managed to absorb the blues of the old masters and make it grow with fire and speed.

but when it comes to vocals, the original blues masters are unbeatable..

  • Why does everyone forget MICHAEL BLOOMFIELD In no direction home Bob dylan said he was the best guitar plyaer he had ever seen that is why he got him to play on Highway 61

  • Mhh. We don't hear really good Blues like this nowadays. Mhh. I do not Heard a song like this really Nowadays Blue. This saddens me...

  • I much prefer Clapton playing the Blues - it really is his niche`.

  • quay to the byway - my fav!

  • I can't get enough, I listen to this over and over. For a peacefull saturday morning, this is the best companion.

  • I can't get enough, I listen to this over and over. For a peacefull saturday morning, this is the best companion.

  • @katara249 It's kept my head straight for 40 years!!!!!

  • Can't thank you enough for uploading this!

  • One of my favorite songs from the greatest Rock N' Roll album ever made.

  • In my opinion, Duane helped make this album come alive

  • @KaronsDarkness So very true, Duane was a genius.....

  • @ripperduck The best slide ever!!!

  • Electric Blues Masterpiece !!!

  • hammer - immer noch!

  • The first solo by Clapton is quite pedestrian by his standards but when Duane goes off he picks it up quite quite a bit inspirational at 5:21 I was one of the many who in the day were lucky enough to see him many times at the old Sarasota Armory a real band box. They blew the roof off that dump so many times it looked like a yo-yo.

  • Grossartig! Auch nach 40 Jahren

  • Duane Allman was taken way way way too early! Imagine if he had atleast 5 more years what type of guitar player he would have been. He was truly a musical genius at any measure. R.I.P Duane Allman and long live E.C. he and Jeff Beck are still carrying the torch. I would include Jimmy Page but he doesnt really do that much anymore.

  • I wholeheartedly agree with your entire post

  • When you mention those ICONS (Allman, Beck, Clapton)...don't forget about Buddy Guy. He paved the way for all of them. He's 73 years old and I saw him in St. Louis 2 weeks ago and he's still amazing!!! I agree with what you wrote about Duane Allman...he was taken WAY too soon. So was Stevie.

  • @jabnhook2 agreed, also the allman bros have had their share of bad luck/deaths over the years

  • @indian5 you got all of that right! Rock on Skydog Allman!!

  • Have heard this album for more than 30 years, and this studio-album is the best bluesrock ever recorded, end of story.

    Derek and Do......= bluespower

  • いいね。

  • 2514zetnom - Bad Ass Jam best ever!

  • that is as close as you can get to the real thing

  • one of his best ever

  • This is one of my favorite D&D songs ever!!!

  • God rest D.A. best slide guitarest ever

  • God I loved Derek and the Dominos and as much as I have always loved EC...IMHO it was Duanes presence on this album that really elevated it to a super classic LP. God rest rest his soul!!!

  • @rikray1 I lived in daytona for many years and new people who went to school with duane & greg , these are , folks who knew them as the Allman joys ...said that Duane was pumped after the Criterion sessions , saying damn Igot em! made clapton jump , well yes he did , and that was the point .. there was a bassist with root boy slim and the sex change band , who later became head guy at King Snake recordsBob Green I think is his name , said well Dune why do think he asked you ... nuff said

  • These two were very high on drugs during the recording of this song! I think we have to rethink the just say no campaign! This song made me a Duane Allman fan for life!

  • Yes, very high! If you have the album look at the pictures inside the jacket. One passing a doobie and one with EC so high he can barley keep his eyes open. Good drugs, great music!!

  • @peachmaniac Why on earth would you just say no? ~~~A bit of the herbal essence never hurt anyone while writing or playing~~unless that person was driving!?! :)

  • I only know the the unpluuged version. But this very rocking! 5 for clapton!

  • I really love this song.Great version by Eric & co.Bravo.

  • Clapton was in so many great groups - The Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek & the Dominos.

  • @091053JG

    Don't forget the Bluesbreakers.

  • yeah somehow everyone forgets john mayall and bluesbreakers......just loved clapton in that album......listen to stormy monday live in the delux album...it blew me off.....bow down to the god.....actually it was this album only after which every kid in england wanted a les paul guitar.....i think clapton was god for those 7 yrs 1964-71......after that he still plays very well......i d rather say its a phase that every musician goes through and clapton is not an exception to it i just love him

  • I won`t forget Mayall...been listening to him since I was 12...about 40 yrs. now. Still love his music. Blues From Laurel Canyon is the best.

  • @evanguy and Bonnie and Delaney

  • @evanguy That was with John Mayall right????

  • @evanguy: Don't forget Delaney & Bonnie...

  • @091053JG Was also in the Bluesbreakers...done some pretty good stuff!

  • D&D in my humble opinion is the best album ever recorded, and this is certainly the best song of the album.

  • Thanks for all of the kind comments----this album was a huge influence on me, as I grew up in South Florida, and it was recorded at Criteria in Miami. It was some kinda magical to think that I used to pass by the studio where this was recorded every day. I learned a lot of how to play both guitar and keyboards from this. Awesome music teachers, dontcha think ? :-) And i've got to believe that we have all had our own "Layla".......... Peace to all :-)

  • This was the song that made me a Duane Allman fan.

  • this song made me clapton fan :P but i love allman and he is my idol...for me duane had given slide guitar a whole new definition...he is one the greatest blues man ever for me...love both clapton and allman....derek and the dominos forever....its just sad that i never saw duane playin wid D&D after that except once live at tampa.....in which both were very very drunk lol......i would have love to watch them....if god grants me a last dying wish i rather ask for duane nd eric live concert :-)))

  • This whole album has a vibe that is so strong.....and a groove that just will not die. South Florida heat? Booze? Drugs? Awesome talent ??? Maybe it was all because this album was about a woman that it makes you sing, and cry, and get drunk and.....well, you know the rest; women have that effect on us. Simply one of the best ever recorded, and it just never, ever gets old hearing it. It's music from the heart. Thanks for the post. Peace:-)

  • binnyman you hit this spot on! Yeah a lot of the songs were related to Patty and Eric's undying love for her; along with the mind altering drugs that was in the scene, but the CHEMISTRY that Eric and Duane fed off of one another is still yet to be equaled even by todays standards. Thanks for the post evanguy!

  • yeah, that's all i would write..

this blows just my mind away..

  • This started as a jam between Clapton and Duane...thats why it starts the way it does...somebody heard it and said record it. Nobody can remember who played what...ahhh...heroin...booze ..musical geniuses. What a mix! One of the greatest albums of all time!!!

  • @thfedexguy Trust me dude that is the one and only SKY DOG Duane Allman on slide.

  • @thfedexguy yeah seems like Sam the Sham was recording this song in a room beside at the studio and they decided to play the song too, then Tom Dowd the producer and said to start recording, and now we have this awesome song that happened by mistake.

i got this info from wikipedia

  • @MathColeto yeah, but the scary thing is how much of this did they miss? hopefully only a few seconds.

  • EC & Skydog = Blues Power

  • My favorite off that great album. D&D is my favorite incarnation of Clapton.

  • awesome stuff!!

  • dude plz dont fight over the duane and eric......and one has to agree that duane had an edge over clapton coz he was just 23 in this album and his skills wer just improving...........and obv earlier the guitarists dies more legendary he becomes coz everyone just wonders what they would be if they were still living.....enjoy clapton for his bends and allman for his slides.......dont fight like metalheads what is better or not

  • Much respect to you man, I agree 100%

  • lol with metal its fun fighting about what bands are better and musicians :)

but its unecissary here i agree.

  • nah i dont think so eric plays too well for anybody...i think you should see his latest concerts....he on fire!!....ive never see him play soo after derek and dominos......see crossroads festival 2004 i shot the sheriff....live at hyde park 1996 have ever loved a woman wid his cherry coloured ES-355 gibson it will surely bring out tears out if you are a blues fan...and also double trouble wid steve winwood is just crazy...these are just nos i can tell clapton is playin very well these dayz :P

  • @shedontlie0cocaine You impress me also~~but I won't go looking these facts up tonight!

  • clapton does never waists a note

    amazing jam

  • Great song!

  • The entire Layla album for Harrison's wife and when Clapton showed her the album she said 'how pathetic you are" lol.

  • They are both having a lot of fun here no doubt.
