On February 5, 1840, Franciscan Capuchin friar Father Tomaso and his Greek servant were reported missing, never to be seen again. The French consul Ratti Menton presented the case as one of ritual murder. The Turkish governor Sherif Pasha supported him.
Solomon Negrin, a Jewish barber, was arrested and tortured. I'm having trouble understanding the conflict between the provisions of the British Mandate and allowing Jewish immigration into the region during the Mandate. The point of the mandate was to guide the native people in the region toward independence. It didn't forbid the immigration of other people into the region that might tip the demographic balance. I'm having trouble understanding the conflict between the provisions of the British Mandate and allowing Jewish immigration into the region during the Mandate. The point of the mandate was to guide the native people in the region toward independence. It didn't forbid the immigration of other people into the region that might tip the demographic balance. Furthermore, despite Jewish influence in British politics, the British did eventually restrict Jewish immigration to Palestine for a time.
