This looks like it could have been from the 1992 NYG that I attended also in New O. Sadly back then, I thought this was cool. Now, it makes me sick. Thanks be to God we have Higher Things for the youth. I pray that many of the kids at the NYG find teaching more like HT. Keep up the great work Pastor!

Sadly such things did happen at NYG. When is Jerry going to learn to not let his wife speak at his public appearances? Being at NYG did make me realize how infected we have become with pop/baptist theology. I am going to smack the next person who says kids need to make their faith their own faith not their parents. At the same time, there was good stuff, "you are not the hero of your story, Jesus is the hero of your story"

I would just like to say that, despite whatever else may have gone on that was good and pure, the things highlighted in this video are exactly the kind of "feel good theology" that led me away from the Faith for many years, and nearly resulted in me losing the chance to properly instruct my children in the TRUTH while they were young. The National Youth Gathering should represent what the LCMS confesses. Quite literally, souls are at stake.

Yikes! While clearly such happened at the NYG, the presentation has led me to believe the good Rev was not in attendance as was I. I do enjoy most of your videos, but this one left me quite taken back. Where is the video of the other 7 6x4' wall boards with opposing comments handwritten on both sides? Where's the video of thousands of youth sitting through a Bible Study focusing on the Sacraments?

@IIIJohnIV What a great verse! I had hoped to include video of the Pres. K preaching the clear Gospel, or the Te Deum from the Divine Service, however, the overabundance of "other stuff," turned it into a video on Moral Therapeutic Deism, rather than a video on the NYG. Defenders of the NYG have relied on post-modern "personal experience" as the true meter of discernment, but this only validates the point. I highly recommend you read Dr. Smith's work. This is bigger than the LCMS. +pax!+ :)

If this was so wrong, at what point did you pull your own youth out? I typically really enjoy your videos, but this one really bothers me. It appears, Pastor, that your God can't sustain His own church in spite of the sinners in it. On top of this, your clips are taken out context & you failed to mention the daily sectionals dedicated to theological education and Bible study. Because of this, I'm led to believe you didn't go to the NYG and have no right to judge it. If you did, where's the hope?

@SimplyTopher I appreciate your feedback! I didnt attend this gathering but I spoke to many who did on both sides of the aisle. I disagree with your premises: 1. Clips are not out of context. 2. I am not questioning anything other than "teaching" 3. A daily sectional is included 4. The Holy Trinity can and does sustain his Church in spite of sinners. He does so with his pure Word which saves us.

I understand that many disagree with the many who think the NYG is ineffective and perhaps harmful. Is the answer to be quiet and ignore it? Or is the answer to get a real, honest debate going?

I am not against youth gatherings. I am against moralistic therapeutic deism. Have your read the book? Can you judge my video until you do? ;)

I'm glad you usually enjoy the vids. Please continue to do so! Please also understand that I receive negative feedback about the videos you like as well, from those who say, "How can you say these things?"

Where is the proper line?  Where is pure doctrine? These are good, hard questions. What scares me is that we're not asking them.

Watched this AFTER watching the subsequent "Greek Tuesday" video, and...well, I can certainly see why many people were cheesed off at you. That said, it's clear that we have a problem, Houston. I was incredibly comforted to hear the same kind of comments from you and that our pastor (at an LCMS church in MN) makes all the time regarding contemporary worship and our worship services in general. This is terrible. As a senior, I see this narcissistic paganism in my own "Lutheran" highschool. Its so terrible when all kids like me need to hear is that, "yeah you have messed up. worse yet you've incurred God's wrath. But Christ took bore that wrath for you in his own person. Your sins are forgiven and you are righteous. Go in peace." The last thing sinful high schoolers need to hear is that their emotions, decisions, and "being on fire for Jesus" is what makes one right with God.
