ahh,,, ummm so a bunch of stills and then some basic cutout... after downloading the software and trying it out I'm totally flabergasted that anyone did even basic stuff like that... Like, why is it that as soon I click the canvas, the toolbox panel disappear underneath it?! This is basic stuff... I don't want to have to minimize the canvas each time I want another tool.
Is Synfig anything like After Effects? I'm thinking of switching to Ubuntu but my last concern is that Photoshop and After Effects don't run on Linux systems. Any reply is appreciated. :)
@Ausut You _could_ use Synfig to replicate some of the tasks you might use After Effects for. It will allow you to composite special effects on your videos, but if you're going for a full length features, or lot of special effects, then you might want to look into something more suited to editing video as the main focus of its functionality.
@testingte Thanks for the tip. I found that Kdenlive is pretty close to what I need. Cinelerra seemed a bit messy to me at first, if I remember correctly, but I'll give it another go.
@Ausut blender is a better after effect replacement, it hase a video editor and a node compositor with keyframeable attributes and such. It's incredibly powerful.
@phyerboss I used a separate program (jlipsync) to work out the timing. Synfig can read in papagayo files (another tool to do lip sync). But Synfig doesn't have audio support natively yet.
@pxegeek Aw man. Any reason as to WHY they wont/cant get that working?=\
Also, 1 last dumb question:
I can use hand drawn frames right? As in "scanned off paper". Im not a real big vector/tween guy. And would love it if I can do a few things the old fashioned way!
The one i d-loaded i just couldent get a handle on. Couldent find a good tutorial online for it either. Looks like ill have to stick with Windows, but i was looking forward to find somthing that would help with motion transitioning. :(
@pxegeek does that also pertain to FBF animation? I see many many tweens through synfig, but i don't see much FBF work. is this because the program is not very supportive of FBF work, or is it mor the style of the animators themselves?
@themegagod1 and @phyerboss You _can_ use Synfig for FBF animations, but at that point you're pretty much just using Synfig to edit your video, and there's probably other programs that are better suited to that.
I don't know what I think of Synfig. Some of the reel looks really great, some really stiff and sterile, so it's clearly a matter of how you use it. I tried it a while and opted to use "another open source animation program" To each his/her own.
I appreciate the open-source idea, and appreciate that someone is trying to make an open-source 2D animation program, but I haven't seen a single decent animation from anyone using this program. I've seen some really great, professional-looking stuff from Blender, but I'm partial to 2D and that's what I want to do... I think I'll hold out for an open-source program that's a little more like Toon Boom.
Yes, actually. There is a project which is focusing on making an entire movie in open source tools (primarily Synfig !!), but it will take a while to get used to it... I am still working on figuring it out myself.
Synfig is really only limited by the skills and time constraints of the animator. Walking is quite a complicated motion, and while Synfig can animate it, animators use tricks to avoid it where possible - that's why in the Synfig Prologue video the action takes place with the characters hip deep in a sewer. It can be done, but it takes time that could be spent elsewhere in the animation.
2) I haven't used flash software, but as I understand it's a) not cheap and b) exports to flash. Synfig is free and renders to multiple formats. You can use it to render to individual frames then use ffmpeg to combines them to FLV format. But it's not flash.

@Ausut best alternative to AE for Linux is Cinelerra
Synfig (to my knowledge at least) is probably more like Flash than AE
Meant for 2d animation

Ausut 8 months ago
@Ausut Cinelerra is difficult to get the hang of, once/if you do, it will be highly worth it!
Kdenlive is more of a Sony Vegas than an AE, and there are some things that you won't be able to pull off.
If all you wish are simple tasks such as chroma keying though, you could probably stick with Kdenlive.

Has Synfig ever advanced enough to sync in audio to works?
I keep seeing this vid and the guy at the beginning talking with the mouth synced. But, read from others that Synfig does not have such a feature.

Yaminoken 1 year ago
@Yaminoken If you just want to make animations, then yes. If you want the interactivity you can get with flash, then no.

Can you do frame by frame animation on this?
Sethanas12 1 year ago
@Sethanas12 You could, but it's not really what Synfig is designed to do. You might be better off with another application, like Pencil.

@pxegeek is it freeware?

the first animation in the synfig demo reel was SO POOR! Is synfig capable of animating more than eyeballs? It seems we can't make people walk.

Ok, so I recently downloaded Synfig and I was wondering a couple of things.
1.) What formats can you save the complete work to? You say animations are importable to video editors?
2.) Compared to Flash software?
theredjelousy 2 years ago
1) google 'synfig render options'
2) I haven't used flash software, but as I understand it's a) not cheap and b) exports to flash. Synfig is free and renders to multiple formats. You can use it to render to individual frames then use ffmpeg to combines them to FLV format. But it's not flash.

No, but it's on the list of things to do. Right now, sound is added with a video editor.
