this is a flashover not a backdraft. backdrafts wouldnt be putting out this much smoke out of windows, this is showing the building has air going int oit
@boone1585 I had a bonfire at the beach draft on me, you can have well ventilated building draft air into the fire. This was nowhere near a flashover because after the gulp of air the fucking fire went back to the way it was ans that's a low burn high soot fire . had this been a flash the fire would have has enough heat to keep going.
rollover before flashover. backdrafts generally do not breath a push this much smoke. flashovers can be very forcefull and appear to be a backdraft. after searching youtube i have found so far only about 2-3 real backdrafts. it could be possible that this thing drafted from an enclosed space inside the building and the whole building didnt backdraft. possible but from this short video it appears to be more of a rollover-flashover condition due to the smoke push.
@lug1 < You need to lay off the Wikipedia. This was very much a backdraft. I've seen well ventilated fires draft air just like this one just did. Rollover-flashover...go to bed sweetheart.

Not only do you have no clue what you're talking about, you also have zero clue as to what all the books you quote are talking about. rollover is the fire literally rolling over like its boiling. flashover is when the temp is sufficient to ignite the surface area of everything occupying the room. this usually happens with force. backdraft which this does not appear to be is when the conditions are superheated deprived of oxygen and filled with dense hydrocarbon smoke. the oxygen is introduced sufficiently to cause an explosion=sonic wave=lots of force! usually characterized by at least some structural collapse.
Wow, that smoke looks evil! Very freaky how the smoke is being pulled back down and into the structure, almost as if the video is being played backwards! Definitely a fire searching for oxygen.
buddy of mine got blown out of a third floor window by a backtrap door, he opened the door, air rushed into the room and ignited, followed by an explosion that threw him 30 feet from the building and 3 floors down. almost died the lucky bastard
no that is a rollover. a flash over is where everything in the room reaches its ignition temp at the same time and lights off. that is a situation that is not survivible.
something about the smoke rolling back into the opening kinda gives away the backdraft conditions...flashover is when the fire rolls over then ignites the smoke..am i right??
That seems to be a backdraft, the characteristics are all right...in any case this just goes to show how dangerous the job can really be so stay safe and fight hard!
ok bottom line...those of us who are actual firefighters know its a backdraft.....not a flashover...trust us so please those who dont fight fire or work with it please stop talking like you do...to my brother firefighters ...keep riding and stay safe
Ok I'll bite. I don't think you can really tell whether it is a backdraft or a smoke explosion. As we all know, a backdraft is caused by a change in ventilation conditions (such as opening a door, which these fire crews may have done) and a smoke explosion occurs without the change in compartment conditions. It is clear that it wasn't a flashover though. You'll know that just by seeing one. Whatever it was, the conclusion remains the same. Wear all your PPE and stay safe.
"its accually not a back draft its a smoke explotion"
How the hell is that not a backdraft.. the smoke was breathing. Obvious signs of it. Maybe you should get on a dept that has any fucking clue what they are doing. Or go back to school and and learn how to spell.
Under "more info" from postee it says 3 civillians, probably the ones who did,nt want to evacuate, died. Good thing you guys set up that 45 degree angle. Great video and a good read under info. Thanks.
Reading the info those people were crazy not wanting to evacuate, if a know that the smoke is coming from a fire not able to be handle by and extinguisher or something burning on the stove im going to leave what building im in.
Flashover is the point right after the growth stage of fire where the entire room contents is about to reach 1000F to 1500F at the same time. Backdraft is where the contents of the room are in the decay stage of fire starving for O2. The temp remains very hot and if O2 is introduced(like opening the door or window) it creates an exposion. Signs of potential backdraft include "living smoke", soot on the windows.
your forgeting about the part of flashover how super heated smoke and gases heat an area and then cause the entire area to start to combust..... but overall that was a perfect text book explaination you know your stuff to the T
I saw that.. How essentially the Building seemed to be "breathing" smoke in and out.. Classic textbook Characteristic trait of a backdraft about to happen. Generally speaking I havent seen one yet that doesnt do this ( living smoke) somewhere. Not enough of the young guys ( and Im a young girl, but grew up around this) know to look or pay much attention.. Glad no FireFighters were injured.. I only wish people would get out when they are told.
It looks more like a smoke explosion then a backdraft to me but either way you can see the sucking and puffing which are huge signs for something is about to happen.
I was a firefighter for 9 years. Never experienced a backdraft or a flashover 1st hand, but that has to be one of the biggest backdrafts I have ever seen on video.
Geez louise!! I watched this 4 or 5 times and it doesn't look like a "movie" backdraft, but whatever it was (and I have no knowledge on this subject at all), it was one scary event! :( I hope all the ff were okay!
I agree it's not a backdraft in the classic sense, but to me it does look like the fire was starving for oxygen. Look at the smoke, as it belches out you can see it move back in as air is being sucked into the building. Does anyone know more about the actual situation? Did they break a window which caused the violent reaction.
yea, i live in the town...my friends dad kicked the door in and then that happened...no firefighters died, but three people that lived in the apartments were killed.
I was 17 at the time, and was drinking a 40 oz. under the portland street bridge at the time saying "what the fuck is happenin' over by the bookstore?"
