My god that is beautiful. Like he said, it is exceedingly humbling. I don't know what to feel, it almost made me cry to see that. And to think i got excited to see ferraris, lambos, astons on earth, all that seems like a child's play after witnessing the beauty and the immensity of the earth. My god. Amazingly beautiful.
It's amazing as to how low the indicated airspeed is at 70,000 feet. The U-2 has a very low airspeed window; if it flew any faster, it would loose control for exceeding its maximum Mach speed. Any slower and it would stall for not flying fast enough.
Best show on UK TV this year period. (Though thanks to being 3 years younger than James May, I don't remember Apollo's 7 - 14, I do remember the last 3 Apollo missions and have had an avid interest in all things that fly (in the atmosphere and beyond) from at least the age of 5). Most of the information on the programme on both the Apollo and U2 I already knew (have seen U2's fly in both the UK and the Gulf), However what really made the programme was that last 10 odd minute's. Perfect!
The whole programme was excellent, and the GTO 'in car' footage was very good (however I've seen a U2 land while I was at 'Als Garage', so I knew what was going to happen). As for my remarks about this video, the ground footage and editing by the BBC crew, James's and your camera work and of course your flying, with Ty Unwin's music on top, is a piece of work that I'll never get bored of watching. Somebody at the BBC please release Ty's music on a CD or MP3 downloadable format.
Forgive my ignorance, but when they took off thy dropped the landing geer from the wings. Once they stopped rolling after landing wouldn't they just tip over onto one wing?
Yes, the U2 does normally tip over onto one wing tip at the end of the landing (the wing tips are fitted with skid plates), then the chase crews refit the 'pogo' wing landing gear and it taxi's back to its pan. If you check out the clips of 'James May at the edge of Space', you will see James help the USAF guy refit the pogo's on a U2 that they chased.
watching this always helps my mind relax just a lil bit. i think of all the people who get to see shit us civilians never will. i would have joined the military, but i fucked up when i was a kid and they didn't want me. my brother saw the world from naval ships.
on a second note it really pisses me off that even when they are taking up a u2 space jet, theres some asshole chemtrailing over those beautiful clouds. That asian fellows funny, you can tell he's got plenty of hours under his patchs.
James May has to be one of the luckiest people alive, hes gone into space, more then what the average person could do in his life. Thanks to the bbc and the us millatery he would never of done something like that. OUT STANDING!! GOD ID LOVE TO BE HIM
i think if allll the white nationalists, extremist/militant muslims and all the other scumbags in the world got to go up and see that view they might wake up and end their hatred...
Greatpoint! I'm afraid these idiots don't see the world the same way you or I do. Take care of the planet and your fellow human beings the best you can and remember just how small we are in comparison to the infinite universe. We are nothing more than ants living on a spec of dust by chance. It is a miracle you or I were even born to experience the lottery of life. There are billions upon billions of galaxies that are born, live and die like us in the cosmos. Blows your mind!
didn't mean May was paying but that ride wasn't exactly 'cost free' meaning someone had to pay something. The govmt probably flipped the bill but so long as it's for top gear, it's fine.
This puts a whole new perspective on things. How small we are, if you have ever seen a sold out major league baseball stadium filled, thats 50,000 people, imagine what twenty filled stadiums would be? Multiply that by another thousand and you have the worlds population (7 billion) and there is still room for more of us on this planet (not much.) then take into account that, then figure that 1,321 earths can fit into jupiter, and 964 jupiters fit into the sun, and thats just 1 solar system
there are 100 billion stars in our galexy! And that is just one galexy! Who knows how many thousands of billions of those there are! Now bring it back to basics, how many you's would fit in that space? How important are you? Do you think that if there is an omni-potent being, he has time for you now? Do you really believe that in all that space, in all those other worlds, that we are the only beings? How ignorant that would be. To assume that we as humans are special, and that you are special.
um im taking a guess here and my dad's a F-16 pilot , that there higher than just 70,000ft up cause he has a friend who flew and saw a goose 85,000! ft and 70,000 is this.... i think not
No, NOT Pidgeon - the callsign is Pinon-93 (pronounced Pinyon, as in the Pinyon Pine Tree, the pine tree found at the highest altitude) - NOT Pidgeon.
if you do a google search for "Street Fire James May on the moon" you will find the whole 60 min program in its entirity, as well as "James May at the edge of space" (30 min).
I will tell you that we did in fact go well above 70,000ft.
I think it was Richard Dawkins who argued that it's a cop-out to attribute such beauty to a "god" when the more amazing and intellectually beautiful reality is that this is the result of natural phenomenon.
Please elaborate. Do you believe in evolution and God, or just one or the other? Even a busy man like you (if it's you) should be able to do better than a one word reply to that Sir. Anything less at this stage of our conversations would simply be rudeness I'm afraid.
