I can't stand when people ruin such a great pairing with a bunch of their own pictures, I mean really. Why do that??? IT'S SO DAMN LAME!!!! thanks god I don't have to look at this.
It was also released as a 45rpm on the Harvest label, back in 1971. It has to be said...those photos...gross!!!! 10 for sound...big fat zero for visuals.
Amazing thing to have been the 17 year old drummer on this amazing piece of history. I bet you have other stories that, I for one, would love to hear. Thanks for sharing in the provenance of this piece.
The main part of this was released donkey's years ago on Blue Thumb records, I've got the old vinyl copy. Jimi plays on another song, Stand Out? Not sure.
The first couple minutes might be Hendrix. Hendrix wasn't a chittlin' circuit bluesman. He was a modern club, record, and concert kind of performer. This is some patch-together job.
@lightlyone The first song is definately Hendrix. Called Everlasting First, recorded with Arthur Lee & Love 1970 co-written by Jimi, the complete version is on the new box set West Coast Seattle Boy. Love it! The 2nd track sounds like Jimi & I assume with Lee & Love again. Never heard that one before.
That guitarist on the edit from 2.58 to the end is not Hendrix...It is Melvan Ransom Whittington lll known at the time as Melvan Wonder. From an unreleased recording called "Black Beauty". I know this because I was the 17 year old drummer on the record. When we toured with Clapton he used to stand at the side of the stage just to watch Melvan. He told me he loved the feel of Melvan's playing.... Same RnB and Blues Chittlin circuit roots fas Hendrix or those of you who know.
btw - The Arthur Lee I met and conversed with in the early '90s was warm, polite and generous. An example of the latter was his response to my suggestion that he recreate in his performances what for me was a magical moment - a solo acoustic segment that had engendered a beautiful, heart-felt, spontaneous audience participation on "Andmoreagain" at the 10/1/93 NYC concert at The Grand.
However, Arthur was much more concerned that his band members get their play time.
This is not to say that Arthur's mecurial temperment didn't make him periodically obnoxious and/or violent. But the severity of Arthur's sentence was a consequence of the ill-conceived, draconian three-strike law that - along with mandatory sentencing - has many imprisoned for prolonged periods (not just the hardened criminals for whom it was intended) who don't just don't belong there.
Arthur's third strike was shooting a gun in the air after arguing with a neighbor.
Yes, I agree and he didn't even shoot the gun. An acquaintance from New Zealand did the deed and came to court and told the judge. The judge didn't care and he sentenced Arthur anyway...
I used to hang a bit with Velvert Turner in NYC in the late '60s & early '70s. He once told me "It's too bad you can't sing my songs." Much later I realized he was probably too shy to ask directly, and I was too dumb to realize he was asking. Ah, well! I never actually got to hear him play, but he once introduced me to Jimi.

You sure wasted a lot of time putting these pictures together. After like 5 seconds does anyone watch? As a lot have said, the music is great, no thanks to you.
There is a whole album and a half worth of Jimi and Arthur recorded at Olympia Studios, London in 1970. A guy who had a store at Kensington Market had an acetate and played me some - mostly jamming with George Survanovich on Drums.
Arthur's estate will likely have title to these tapes but they probably need some work on them to bring them up to par. Better release something of them soon, though, or the tapes may deteriorate.
Jimi loved Randy California's music. He was the "other" player to be teamed up with Winwood...I got a line on that babe! I also have a Hendriz - Lee cut of EZ Rider. Ya know, all of this arguing, like it's a pissing contest is jejune. Enjoy tha music.
man on man, there was so true moments of brilliance in these cuts. if these guys couldve somehow got together & really did some lengthy work, each wouldve done these best work. you can hear it in these short spurts, how well they compliment there unique gifts. lee really knew how to groove on jimi's vibe & few can say that. there backgrounds were similiar & their eclectic tastes in music similiar. sadly, both & too many time & legal contraints, not to mention drowing in waves of dope.
I was fortunate to see Arthur many times live ... he was a true genius. Don't know about the Never Released tag on this video though. This song appears on Love's False Start album
Also Hendrix was into and really dug Steve Winwood ... who wouldn't ... just the master of his idiom ... pity he got thrown aside ... what a loss. Nothing better than Had to Cry Today.
Very gay... but otherwise great & awesome musically. I love the first couple lines of lyrics with the music. There is some true magic here. Arthur Lee & Jimi should have had a super band together. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SICK!!!
great tune but the photo album shows images i'd just as soon not have floating about my poor head...couldn't we have just had a nice montage of lee/hendrix photos?
What a great demo. I dig it. I do know Arthur once spoke laughingly about comparing his guitar playing with the great Jimi Hendrix. He was a dead honest guy ... which is why he was never really commercial successful and spent time in jail. One thing we are good at in America -- well actually were #1 in the world at it -- is incarcerating our own people. This artist did not deserve the treatment he got. Rest in peace, Arthur and Jimi.
arthur lee was in jail due to CA third strike laws and for shooting at a girl friend in his apartment. so, if one thing is clear it is this: he was NOT in jail for being a "dead honest guy". love the man, but for his music, not his behaviour...
and you believe the Courts of course, and the corrupt police ... sorry, I don't buy it ... don't pretend that an arrest and conviction has anything to do with anyone's character ... you roll up fourteen federal warrants for your arrest pretty quickly ... just take a politcal stand, and watch!
I don`t disagree with your judgement per se. I love arthur lee, but interviews, biographies and film material shows him to have been highly original, but also outspoken to the point of arrogance. I for one would not have chosen to disagree with a drunken or drugged arthur lee - especially if he were simultaneously wielding a firearm...
and you believe the Courts of course, and the corrupt police ... sorry, I don't buy it ... don't pretend that an arrest and conviction has anything to do with anyone's character ... you roll up fourteen federal warrants for your arrest pretty quickly ... just take a politcal stand, and watch!
