I recall seeing Melanie at an outdoor event back then. She performed early in the morning, alone, onstage before thousands of people. She looked so frail and you could see her breath in the mornings chill air. She opened with Lay Down, and the power of her voice cut the air like a knife. The crowd was stunned. The frail young girl held them spellbound in the palm of her hand. An amazing performance. I'll never forget it.
a tiny glimpse of heaven? there was a time when the monster trembled in his lair in fear, caused by the joyful noise without; oh to hear that noise again!
Wow! Rarely do I see vintage concert footage that makes me painfully yearn to have been there. This is one of the most moving live performances I've ever seen - a great moment frozen in time for all to see, thanks to YouTube. Love it when Melanie goes into the "So raise your candles high" interludes (1:18, 2:40). What passion!
@throatgorge2 i had to check them out before responding back to you cause i had never heard of them. although kelly has a good voice i'm still sticking with my original, stevie nicks vocally and she looks like linda ronstadt. sorry :) but thanks for bringing the carrie nations to my attention though, they're not bad at all!! :)
@meb623 sure, but the voice, hair and face are a lot more similar... of course you're right, because the Carrie Nations were not actually a real band!
@throatgorge2 well see that i didn't know that either lol. the videos i saw looked like they were from a movie from like the 70's or something, i do enjoy the old music so that's probably why i kind of liked it.
Actually, Linda Ronstadt and Stevie Nicks got some of their styles from Melanie who predated them by a couple of years. Emulation is the most sincere form of praise :)
this has to be one of the top 10 songs ever ! and what a preformance... too bad it seems to be wasted on a 70 year old audience, but they do seem to like it
A couple of old stiffs in the audience watchin' everyone else getting the groove on and being shazamed by Melanie...so cool. One of my favs of all time.
Wow....... she can sing the s**t out of this song. Gives goose bumps watching her sing like this. She's having a blast and it's transfered to the listener. Such a talented young lady with the most beautiful smile on our planet. I am in love all over again! (lol)
I was 15 years old when the Candles in the Rain Album came out. This single was a big hit, but I never knew she'd done this performance until youtube. I got the LP back then and still have it. One of the most uplifting things I ever read were written by her in the liner notes, they went something like this: I was afraid that I would always have to sing alone, but thanks to the Edwin Hawkins Singers, I got to sing with the whole world. I wore the needle out listening to this.
Tutta bella, Some came to sing, some came to pray:)*:) Some came to keep the dark away***** So raise the candles high***black against the sky***** Loamo:)*:) Salute Ciao:)*:)

I'm 57 and this reminds me of what it was like to have passion for a cause like the end of racism and the end of the Vietnam war.

She's beautiful! But, it's weird seeing this hippie girl playing in front of an audience consisting of middle aged people in suits!

From the Dutch television show, "Vor De Vuist Weg". Definatly not the typical Melanie audience. Looks kinda like an RNC gathering.
