I recall seeing Melanie at an outdoor event back then. She performed early in the morning, alone, onstage before thousands of people. She looked so frail and you could see her breath in the mornings chill air. She opened with Lay Down, and the power of her voice cut the air like a knife. The crowd was stunned. The frail young girl held them spellbound in the palm of her hand. An amazing performance. I'll never forget it.

Wow! Rarely do I see vintage concert footage that makes me painfully yearn to have been there. This is one of the most moving live performances I've ever seen - a great moment frozen in time for all to see, thanks to YouTube. Love it when Melanie goes into the "So raise your candles high" interludes (1:18, 2:40). What passion!

I was 15 years old when the Candles in the Rain Album came out. This single was a big hit, but I never knew she'd done this performance until youtube. I got the LP back then and still have it. One of the most uplifting things I ever read were written by her in the liner notes, they went something like this: I was afraid that I would always have to sing alone, but thanks to the Edwin Hawkins Singers, I got to sing with the whole world. I wore the needle out listening to this.
