Nobody gives Lawrence Gowan the credit he deserves for replacing Dennis DeYoung on keyboards and vocals. REO and Styx are still going strong. They aren't a couple of old bands thrown together to embark on an "old-timers" tour. Hitt and Amato have been with REO for about 20 years. Gowan has been with Styx for at least 15 years. A few years ago REO, Styx, and Journey did a "Legends Of Rock" tour. What a thrill that was to see those three bands together!
@TheProfessorOfLife Agree with everything you said, especially about Gowan. Saw one of Gowan's first performance in 99 and saw that "Legends Of Rock" in a little town in South Carolina called Marion at the what was at the time called "The Marion Ampitheater." One of the most rockin shows I have ever seen. Concert was about 5-6 hours best I remember. Tired by the time Journey finished (might have been the beer LOL), but what an awesome show. These guys still rock!!!!!
@jamesskb The funny thing is, all of the "older" bands are still very, very popular and are out there touring, because their music is timeless. Journey, REO, Styx, Doobie Bros., Foreigner, Night Ranger, Chicago, Pat Benatar..........the list goes on and on. We saw Foreigner last year and they were spectacular. Their "new" lead singer is a dead ringer vocally for Lou Gramm. "Old-timers" like myself and my wife appreciate REAL musicians, and REAL lyrics, and the younger generations do too.
Styx was as big as anybody in the late 70's early 80's. REO had their own claim to fame in the same era. It's cool to listen and have a catharsis from hearing the memories.
@Poko1976 I wouldn't go that far. Freddy Mercury was the voice of Queen. Dennis was not the sole vioce of Styx. In fact, Tommy Shaw sang quite a few of their biggest hits. They can go on with out Dennis and do a whole set with needing his voice at all.
Yup Youngsters,Pay attention,You'll never see anything as good as these two groups together. In all phases of the music.Best of the 70's & 80's....Old School....

both of these bands know how to rock the house....back from the day each band had a distinctive sound, you knew who they were when you heard the opening notes.....nowadays , it might be be one of five different bands, they all sound the same
Tommy and JY are still rocking Styx....DeYoung is doing stage productions of 101 Dalmations....Proves DeYoung needed Styx more than they needed him........
@HowardOfOz3565 The whole "Mr. Roboto" thing really did Dennis DeYoung in. What the hell was that all about anyway? Stupidest thing Styx ever did. Lawrence Gowan is doing a great job replacing DeYoung and he is quite the showman on-stage. Those canucks have good musicians too!
@HowardOfOz3565 Tommy and JY are playing county fairs today, DD is still on Broadway. Name one original hit from Styx since DD left? DD and the Ponozzo's were Styx today Styx is a shell.
@cetlahi Just look who was playing what guitar!! red and blue???? they swapped!!!! sounded great! seen em both live so unless you all have too,... don't judge!!!!

Yeah. REOs lead singer's brother used to be "my" weatherman. That's got to be an awkward family gathering. "Hey Sean, what you been doin? Talkin to a few hundred people on local TV? Ive rocked millions live. Its good to know you've done well in life."
I was at that concert and it was great. They filmed it for the Arch allies tour. Eddie Money played before Styx and REO. Damm that was a great concert!!!!
REO's lead guitarist has the sickest Les Paul i have ever seen but I still think Styx's lead guitarist, James "JY" Young, is one of the best guitarists of all time.
yea sorry about that. in the Roll With The Changes video REO's guitarist is playing a wicked les paul that looks a lot like the one tommy's playin in this one.
Tommy Shaw has shared a stage with some of the biggest egos in rock. Ted Nugent, Dennis DeYoung, etc... but I don't think there is a stage big enough to share with Mr Cronin. He does love to hear himself. lol
hahahaha yeah sheldon i was thinking the same. i went to a styx, reo, and def concert last night. styx is my favorite band and reo runs a close second
Um I was at THAT concert and Tommy had nothing to do with screwing up this song! In fact, Kevin Cronin couldn't even remember the words to the song! Otherwise, the rest of the band onstage did a wonderful job! I have seen this performed many, many times. How do you see it that Tommy screwed this up?
Oh boy did you put me in my place! Thank you! Nostalgic bullshit? This was taped in June of 2000! Not exactly nostalgia, wouldn't you agree? Well, obviously you care enough to point out what you think was the screw up in this song.
How in the heck does it even know anything about American music? (yes this is a thing not a person) I bet it doesn't even know Styx and REO have great history of being the biggest rockbands of all times. Either that or it's very pathetic for being such a child and screaming at things it doesn't even need to watch if it hates it so much. Point said.
I think the reason REO and Styx got together so easily is because both bands are from the South Side of Chicago - Oak Lawn to be specific. Each bands sound compliments each other too.

I was at Rama, also, and GOWAN was amazing. But, he is not Dennis, and has never tried to be. STYX is a new and improved band since they unloaded Dennis and hired on Lawrence Gowan. This DVD is killer, also.
I stand corrected. I just meant that the Styx songs that Gowan sang(Grand Illusion and Come Sail Away) were songs originally done by Dennis(were they not?), and he did a fantastic job. His energy on stage was unbelievable. And his voice, on Criminal Mind, was simply astonishing. Sounded better than I remember the original. I wish them all much continued success.
listen.. STYX still kicks ass.. Without Dennis.. They went on when Tommy was in Damn Yankees and it seems like no one has ever brung that up.. Get over.. Dennis is no more and the music is still there.. Just enjoy...
2 of the greatest bands of all time together...pure greatness, although Styx without Dennis is NOT Styx.
Its also nice to hear Kevin singing in his normal voice. Nowadays he mostly uses a falsetto, although Im not sure if he does that on purpose or if its just from old age.
Is that 3 BASSES?? I see Burtnik, Chucky Panozzo and REO's guy. REO's drummer got the tambourine treatment, letting Todd play the song.. boy talk about overkill.
I wish Kevin would sing an REO song in the same style that he sings in this vid. I was surprised when I first heard it. The did REO's Roll With The Changes as well. I'll post in the near future.
Still sizzling hot after all these years! My 2 fave bands together... looked like they had a great time too! Just saw Styx a week ago and had a blast... only left me wanting more. Sigh. wish they were coming around again...
Kevin sang the words wrong on the last line of verse 2... oh well... he still kicks ass

HE'S RIGHT! STYX WITHOUT DENNIS IS NOT STYX! But, REO still has it too.

I agree. Kevin sounds best singing less folksy, more blues/rock.

Still sizzling hot after all these years! My 2 fave bands together... looked like they had a great time too! Just saw Styx a week ago and had a blast... only left me wanting more. Sigh. wish they were coming around again...
