Like how they made Puss in Boots an assassin in the 2nd. Making fairy tale characters more badass.

Pied Piper really ought to be wearing clothes in bold colors. Browning said red and yellow. I don't care if it's red and blue or green and yellow so long as it's colorful. This was in the middle ages after all when people actually, you know, went out of their way to wear striking clothes in beautiful colors, unlike the 21st century with its largely monochromatic preference for clothing.

Shrek is a fractured fairy tale, meaning it borrows from real fairy tales. The Pied Piper of Hamelin is a real fairy tale about a guy in colorful clothing who kidnapped the town's children when the mayor refused to pay him for getting rid of the rats. Moreover it's documented in medieval history. Shrek's version is simply not canon to the other sources.

It's just some knowledge of medieval folklore and history. You know, the Pied Piper is actually a story. Shrek uses stories that already exist. That's the whole point of these movies. But I think you already knew that. Maybe people are more familiar with Rumpelstiltskin than the Pied Piper of Hamelin. :)
