did you know people were calling CPS on his parents? some deemed it was unfair to jeff his step dad had him out there.... now look at the sport; everyone is looking for the next jeff gordon out there.....
@Stags80 Amen to that. Dirt teaches you so much better car control. Asphalt guys when a car gets sideways they just lock down the brakes and slide to the inside. Guys who have run dirt keep their foot in it and power out of the car coming around on them. Racing on dirt made me a better driver on asphalt 1000%. Another thing a guy who has always been on asphalt and never been on dirt cant get out of his own way if he gets on a dirt track. A dirt driver can win an asphalt race the first try
@Stags80 very true, look at montoya not that i don't like the guy, but he raced f1 the so called "main game in motorsport" and he can't win in nascar..
I use to watch Jeff when he was 5-9 years old race Quarter Midgets in Ca, sometimes he would race my step brother and cousin I'm still a HUGE Jeff Gordon fam!!. My Dad Race Sprint Cars at West Capital Speedway in the 60's and 70'...WOW I found this by accident..
i have footage of jeff gordon at the 1987jackson nationals where they interview him and show him spinning out and he keeps the car rolling, its really neat, in the interview he even mentions that he hopes to make it into nascar someday, how ironic! not sure how to post it on here though.
Neat video clip. The kid really was a kid. My brother saw him at age 15 in Jackson,MN,USA with the WoO. He finished mid pack that night. Most of his sprint car racing was in non-wing sprints.
Its pretty bad when people have to talk shit about someone who they hate because they have so much talent and are so good at what they do nice people grow up!

Even though jeff has been successful in nascar. i think that if he had stayed in the midgets sprints and silver crown cars he would have been at the height of his nascar career.
Dirt track experience helps with asphalt racing in general. It teaches you must better car control. I never raced asphalt in my life but had been on dirt for years and the first night I ever touched asphalt in a late model I won a 25 lap race from 21st. Many drivers will say how helpful it is
OMG holy shit!!! i did not know he raced in Perth, let alone australia. I alsways went to claremont, mainly to c the monster trucks. what ever happened to the orange monster truck called Lunatic??
@jdslick1234 i race with a family that raced quartermidgets with jeff. I race quartermidgets with the wickers, and the dad of the kid i race, raced jeff. they have a pic of him first, and jeff second!
I am pretty sure that this was 1987 when Claremont Speedway hosted a 3 night "America's Cup" Sprintcar series race. It was won by the Aussie legend Garry Rush, then local Claremont legend Alf Barbagallo, Lee Foster then the 1st American home was Danny Lasoski. At the time, it was the biggest Sprintcar event held in Australia. Jeff raced very well through the series, and if I recall correctly, if it was for a mid race tangle, we would have been right up there, and he was actually 16 at the time !
I remember watching him win at Bloomington, IN.(mitchells speedway) in the 80's, he refused a kiss from the trophy girl cause he had a girlfriend. I think he was 16 then. Was that really 20 years ago.....wow where'd it go?
I was there at Claremont Speedway that night and was a girl same age. Lined up to get his autograph, but he came across as "up himself" and so I went home and threw the autograph away - probably would have been worth a bit now! I just remember he had a monobrow. Met him again when he was 17, less arrogant and much better racer by then.
Oh my god, Jeff.
