  • And I have trouble forcing myself to spend the 20 minutes it takes to do my 1 mile walk around the 'hood...

I do agree that moderation is a key, and one I certainly have trouble with. To Hell with calorie counting and all the ridiculous do's and don't's. Just eat healthy food, and stop before you feel full. Hard to do when there's still food on the plate and you're compelled to finish it. I do eat healthy, I just eat twice as much as I need to... sigh...

  • @anmoose You should do your 'hood walk!

Moderation is difficult. I am an eater!

    "sigh" is right. - roc

  • Have you ever had "sweet potato fries"?

  • @DebUSA Yes! and I like them! - roc

  • It sounds like you are doing all the right things, so I hope it works for you. I plan on changing what I eat and how much but I know that I will NOT keep up with an exercise routine.. There is no way I would go to a gym for the rest of my life.. I just can't keep it up. So, I think I would be satisfied in losing slower and not exercising routinely BUT to do some sort of exercise, like walking, as often as possible. I hope we can all lose some weight and get healthier!

  • @mysteryglo It is hard work, Judy. I don't want to be infirm when I am your dad's age! I want to be at LEAST as mobile as he is! - roc

  • Starting too exercise and eating better too

  • @charlambe Good. I have had some ups and downs... it isn't an easy thing. - roc

  • Fries and chips are just about the worst things for you that you cam eat...

  • @fehquig yes, the worst... also the best! - roc

  • You're my role model roc ! Must find me a gym or club...or something. Just don't want to be with those "model" type young women prancing around in their skin tight getups! hugs, Chris

  • @bugsinrug I go to Goodlife, Chris. You should investigate Curves. It is women only. The thing I wasn't fond of with Curves is that you switch exercises and machines on command. Everyone works in a circle and you're told when to move on, and then everyone switches machines. I don't like being told what to do! Goodlife must have women only clubs. And you have to ignore the spandex covered bodies! I wear loose jogging capris and a t-shirt. At first, I was self conscious, but I don't care now.

  • I've been using Silk almond milk for about 6 months now. I especially like it in my coffee. Thanks for all of the weight loss talk. It's encouraging me.

  • @Fluttershy Hmmmmm. I will have to investigate that! I was just saying to Jinxie that eliminating cream from my coffee saves lots of calories, but I miss it!

    And, you are welcome! Anytime!!!

    - roc

  • Ya know..... it's true.. moderation in all things. We eat a serving size and pretty much we don't have to count calories. It's been years since I've had salad dressing. I watch my salt too! I love chicken and we eat a lot of it as well. I stopped concentrating on the numbers on the scale and more about the lifestyle change... although I've been at it since October --I'm still learning something new each day. Thanks for sharing roc!!!!

  • @Jinxie228 One thing I did years ago was to stop using cream in my coffee and saved 40 calories a cup and I don't know how many fat grams.

It is all an uphill battle, but ultimately worth it, Martha! Keep at it!!! - roc

  • We eat very similarly. We can do this as long as we don't give up and/or lose sight of why we are doing it. Hmmm that is very interesting about the multiplying your weight by 10? Or was it 12? I can't remember lol ugh memory loss short term, gotta love it! Lol you sound like you are doing great and have a fine foundation of your plan. Hope the fatigue goes away soon. I fight fatigue daily and I'm so sick of It. Makes thing so very difficult. Hugs..

  • @Ikimification Multiply by 12 and subtract 500! I was hoping the exercise would give me some energy. I guess I have to give it time. I'm one of those INSTANT people! Food choices are important - I kind of hate that! - roc

  • I do believe that eating right is the best approach. I was in a serious accident many years ago and the effects of that are now catching up with me, so even walking, much less, exercise is becoming more and more difficult. Fortunately, I've been sick and stressed, lately, so I've lost a fair amount of weight from that :-)

  • @Perroquet51 I get it, Marc. I dislocated my knee and ripped the ligaments when I was 19 and am feeling the injury today.

Stop being sick and stressed. It isn't good to lose weight that way. Although... hmmmmm. Is what you have catching? I'll be right over... - roc

  • unusual tiredness.. Well I am hoping that once you get used to the new BP pill, you will stop being tired...

  • @CookingAndCrafting I was taking the BP pill in the morning and switched to night. I don't know if it will make a difference. Time will tell, I guess. I'm only on 4mm and after two weeks double it. The pharmacist's instruction sheet says side effects are "unusual tiredness", dry cough (see your doctor), and water retention and swelling. That will piss me off! - roc

  • I used to hate that bosu ball. I apparently am not good at balance. I could never hold it.

Good for you for eating the way you should be. I really do need to start doing that as well. I may start that after a nutella mug cake. Okay I jest, I joke ;)

    I need to brb.

  • @CookingAndCrafting I struggle with the bosu ball too. My balance sucks. I keep having to grab the wall! It is good to practice, though.

Patrick is anxious to try the nutella mug cake. He watched your video twice and was very interested.

  • Thanks for telling me how much mayo you use. We tend to put too much and I don't know why it has always been done that way but I do not like it oozing out like that. Ugh.

Portion size is important. But if you stick to what calories your body asks for, and you add exercise, you shouldn't have to cut calories. As my doc said, if you do aerobic work for an hour, you can burn anywhere between 400-700 calories and that is basically more than a meal. So you are skipping a meal a day. Done!

  • @CookingAndCrafting When I am on the elliptical, and I see the burned calorie count, I say to myself - "there goes breakfast!" It will burn about 700 calories per hour. My record (to date) is 18 minutes!! You know that I am a big eater. I just need to accept that I can't eat like a 6'5" man anymore. And that pisses me off. But the food and the movement go hand in hand. You are right, though... sometimes, I don't eat enough of the right things - not enough protein and that causes hunger.

  • pleaseeeee do a video about how you and your hubby met! (:

  • @omqwtf345 heh heh - It was on a picket line! - roc

  • Thank you Roc for talking to us about this. I too have gained back "all" the weight that I lost and I feel horrible. I have become inactive again, which is really weird because I love hiking and being outdoors.

I quit the fast food and I have lost about 5 pounds. I agree with what you have said, it is about portion size and exercising. I am going to do this but I will not starve myself. It is better to make the right changes. I would like to loose some weight before I go to France.

  • @ABQdoubleG You are so busy and it is impossible to exercise while you are driving... oh, I am wrong. There is the double chin exercise you could do! Say the vowels - A E I O U and exaggerate them as much as possible. It strengthens your jaw muscles and that muscle you can feel under your chin. Don't do it too much at first because you can get stiff and you have that jaw problem to start with! 5 pounds down is terrific, Gigi! How long before you go to France? - roc

  • Good for you! That's awesome. I love fish done in paper. Especially with sliced spring squash, tomato, onion and mushrooms. It's lovely. I do cheat and use staples in the paper though - I've no confidence in my folding skills! :)

  • @thizizliz I agree, Liz. The fish "en papillote" (in paper) is very good. A little dill, a couple of slices of lemon, some slices of sweet red pepper, maybe a few sliced almonds, - it is lovely. And very healthy! I really like squash!

Hmmm... maybe I will make a video on how to fold the paper. If I can do it, you can!

    - roc

  • @popparoc46 Oh yes please! I'd love that!

  • @thizizliz okay!

  • im def. gonna have to go on diet after this baby comes i crave everything bad for me, i try not too but i swear it calls my name. i just can't help it. it doesnt help that aaron cooks big meals and hes a great cook. ttyl xoxo.

  • @killaka8894 Tiff, I have some regrets in my life. One of them is not taking care of myself in my younger years. It gets harder with each year that goes by, to get weight off. When my doctor said that being 40 pounds overweight is called "obese", I was horrified. That was five years ago. I lost 45 pounds. In the past three years, I put 50 back on. I want it off. Be careful - yes you are eating for 2, but... Apples. Oranges. Lettuce. Almonds. Bananas. Do it. Yes, Aaron is a great cook! - roc

  • it sounds like you are only getting 1000 calories a day unless your snacks are ice cream.

  • @bohogirl1 heh heh - I would imagine I am eating between 1400 and 1600 calories a day. Sometimes more if I am starving and can't stand it! Chewing lots of gum and hoping that my stomach will shrink SOON! - roc

  • You go Roc :-) I have been trying to do as much as I can, the bad thing is the more I do the more I have pain! Fibro sucks! Thanks for sharing this information with us. I know that a lot of people appreciate it. What are you taking for BP? I take Lisinopril and I have never had any side effects from it and it works wonders. If need be Id be asking for a change of medication because there are so many another may work better for you. HUGS xo

  • @WackaDoodleFreeZone It is very disheartening to have pain when you exercise. I understand. Do what ever you can! It is important to move!

I am taking Coversyl (or chemical name: Perindopril) and just started taking it on Wednesday. I'll give it a month (I see the doctor again on Feb. 7) and if the fatigue doesn't go away, we will discuss a change! - roc

  • Gook luck to you!! I'm just starting a gym program and I have a weightloss coach. I need to lose aprox. 70+ pounds.....again. It is so hard to do and it is a real lifestyle change.

  • @travel4fun003 Thanks so much for the support! In the long run, I need to lose 40. The first goal is 15 pounds down before I travel to Hong Kong, where I will probably put it all back on!! Let's hope not! Every year I age, the harder it is to lose the weight.

    - roc

  • @popparoc46 Wow you sure dont look like you need to lose 40lbs, but good for you!! It is so hard to keep the wieght off but your doing the right thing and just focusing on 15 at a time. I'm very jelous that your going to Hong Kong, that is so awesome.

  • @travel4fun003 You're right - Hong Kong is going to be awesome! "They" say ("they" meaning the experts!) that someone with my body frame and height should weigh 125. I know I will never - repeat - NEVER see that again, so my long term goal is 139. (sigh)

  • I think I'd rather dance.

I confess I do not like exercise I hate it in fact but I like to dance. I just got just dance for the Wii for Christmas so much fun but they do not go easy on you.

Sounds like you have a good plan going Roc & you can have chips and fries again. Just small portions. Of course after you lose what you want.

You are a smart woman and I have no doubt you will meet your goal.

  • @Ultimatecruegirl Dancing and aerobics are very good ways to exercise! I just have to keep at it - I'll make the occasional update!! - roc

  • Good luck on your exercise & diet plans. You are lucky to enjoy the support of your husband.

  • @Teofane Tim, you are right. My husband is a gift. I do not know what I would ever do without him. Thanks. - roc

  • 1852. That's the number I get when I used your calorie formula. It sounds like you get a good variety to eat. I try to keep variety in what I eat as well. I'd rather dance than sit and have a heart attack.

    EdElisea 01/14/12

  • @EdElisea My number is 1600. I remember the year (it was probably 1975) when my doctor put me on a 900 calorie a day diet. Starvation. It was doomed to fail.

Variety is important, as is small frequent meals!

    - roc

  • So interesting roc. It is total moderation and OMG James and I can't get a handle on that and also portion control. OMG. We desperately need to start doing something for us. Hugs girl. I hope your weekend is going well.

  • @imperceptibleme The portion control thing can just destroy all good efforts, Melissa! You have to use salad as a filler, and a book I just read says to have a glass of water before you eat. I'll try that right now! - roc

  • Sounds like you've got a good hold of what you need to do. You strike me as someone who when you set your mind to something you do it. : )

  • @capergirl1976 Usually, that is true, Alesha! Sometimes, the cravings get the better of me, though! I've learned to not let a set back or a bad day destroy me! - roc

  • I am having a difficult time sticking with the exercise. They say it takes 5 weeks to form a new habit, but I have already missed a couple days. Your self-discipline is most impressive! You inspired me to start over again today. Thanks, Roc!

  • @NewBoi1980 Keep moving Mike. Keep moving as much as you can! Think of the senior years yet to come. - roc

  • : )

  • @islandGAL7 I am glad you visit. - roc

  • We got to keep moving in our ole age I so know. Easier said than done. Don't want to put body into starvation mode which I have done of late. I need to eat more fish but it is expensive. I use ground turkey and chicken in general a lot. Do you ever have fish taco/wraps so good. Yep moderation is so the key because you are a smart woman which I always knew. Somedays my smart goes out the window. Need to lose 3 pounds by next Saturday to fit in a dress for a wedding.

  • @cozzyk Kim, I had a fish taco in Nashville that I thought was delicious! It was wonderful! That is a good idea. It would make a great lunch! Thanks!

Good luck with the three pounds. If you eat fish and salad for a week, it is do-able, but not something I recommend over time!

    - roc

  • @popparoc46 Oh yes I remember you speaking of the fish taco duh. We have eaten them since in Florida for 10+ years. I just wish I could afford fish more often. You'd think here I could get it cheap but not so much. I ll figure out how to do three ;) in a healthy good way.
