My mom and I Watched this way back when I was very young. The seen where the mother made the sacrifice to save Nester. I remember my mom saying that she would have done the same thing for me. Sadly a few years later she past away on this very day I watched this every year since. Thank you so so much for sharing this...I love you Mom and Merry Christmas to everyone.
Absolutely! I haven't watched this for 30 years; just happened to think to google the name of the donkey and then check YouTube. Cried just I did 30 years ago.
I've always loved this growing up...always made me cry as well... I just wish they would play it on TV now a days...Children need to see it... There are more messages in it than many may even realize.
In all seriousness, this is the one special that stuck with me as a kid. I remember when it first aired and despite the sad moments within, Nestor not only entertained me, but reminded me why as a Christian we celebrate Christmas. A strong story which proves that you can still have Christ in Christmas.
That Olaf guy at the end must be one strong man to be able to lift a donkey up over his shoulders. Donkeys are heavy. I should know....one fell over on me once!
ok so reading all the comments about people crying during the movie i kept telling myself "im not a kid anymore im not gunna cry" and sure enough what happens? my keyboard is wet from crying over it. Yeah im a big kid so sue me
you guys miss the point. christmas would exist without christianity.. and does in other parts of the world, it would and is just called a different name. its a holiday about love and family. your getting mad because people aren't doing it the way you do and that's just silly. people already make life on earth hell for each other most of the time... you think you could over look it during the christmas season.
Nestor could've used those ears as a weapon; He could've slapped Olaf in his ugly face when he came back home for revenge. But I guess Nestor was too kind and tenderhearted a donkey to do that.
@67nairb He could've also poked Olaf's eyes out and do likewise to the other animals. Nestor could've used his abnormally long ears in many ways....good and bad.
Some of the producers and animators of this R-B special were Japanese. I wonder ? Most Japanese are Buddhists or Shintoist. Why would would they be interested in making movie that dealt with the birth of Christ?
Has every non religious person forgot that Christmas has everything to do with religion I mean come on forget these politically correct nuts out there Christmas is about the birth of Jesus & even though I love the Santa Claus & all the rest of the holiday themes we all need to remember what it really is about Merry Christmas too all & Happy Birthday Jesus & thank you for your sacrifice & love.
Thank you so very much for upload this my favorite Christmas video, even tho I'm 53, I still love what Rankin & Bass put out for us when we were children, I'm so happy to see so many young parents wanting their children to watch & learn from these beautiful video's, Thank you once again, your Friend, Cynthia aka Frosty LOL!
Thanks for putting this up. I have no idea why Rankin/Bass stopped playing this at Christmas. If anything, aside from THE LITTLE DRUMMER BOY, it has more of a spiritual/religious overtone than their other stories- and great, catchy music!
@THEGRINNINGDOGGY Perhaps that the reason the why the was taken off. PC groups thought that it had religious overtones and that it was preachy. Personally I can't watch this show anymore. It's beautifully made but too upsetting to watch for a 43 year old if you get my meaning.
@THEGRINNINGDOGGY the LITTLE DRUMMER BOY is nowhere near as emotional as this Rankin-Bass special. The Little Drummer Boy at least had three animals for friends: Joshua the camel, Ba-Ba the Sheep and a donkey whose name I can't remember. Nestor had almost nobody for a friend except the angel Tilly.
@67nairb - More emotional? That is subjective. For Christians? This donkey carried the Blessed Mother, so really- who had a more important role- Nestor or The Little Drummer Boy? I love both shows.
I think this got yanked because of the sadness of Nestor losing his mother- too much for little kids to take for a Christmas show. Nestor has very catchy songs. The Little Drummer Boy did come out with one major song that is a now a classic by The HARRY SIMEON CHORALE (if I am correct)
I cried so much during this movie :') thanks so much for giving me a piece of my childhood back.It seems like forever since I've gotten to feel like a kid again which is pretty bad for only being 19 ha ha ^_^
What a treasure. Thank you. I'm going to go out and try to find the "Year without a Santa" DVD and see whether it has this as an extra. What a wonderful sentimental show, and I really believe that we could all learn some valuable lessons from this, regardless of religion: kindness, commitment, openness, generosity. Thanks for sharing.
@equesfuscus It is a beautiful story. Unfortunately many people don't learn those valuable lessons of kindness, commitment, openness, and generousity.
@shanehb Perhaps it's because of it's Christian overtones which would irk pc groups. Or because it's just too depressing a show to watch that the networks figure that not many viewers would tune in to watch it. it's an inspiraional story but also a big downer.
This is my favorite Rankin/Bass Christmas special. I totally need to buy that DVD because the VHS tapes of recorded Christmas specials my family has had since the early 90's are slowly dying out.
I loved this. It has similarities to "Small One" and "The Little Brown Burro". I can't say which I prefer. I loved all three. Without Jesus Christ there would be no Christmas. Thank you for posting all of these.
@beth31587 Though sadly, for me at least, it is only played early in the morning, (like, between 5-630am) so even if I want to watch it, I watch it alone since my family likes sleeping in over the Christmas break.
My friend, Amanda, will be so happy to find out this is on here. It's her favorite Christmas show and one of my favorites, too. Thanks so much for posting!
When I was a kid, I only remember this being shown on tv about twice and hasn't been seen since. Very sad story. I guess its another victim of the liberal political correctness thought police. Can't show any kids shows that are Christian and mention what Christmas is really about because it mind offend someone. Flaming libs are scheming right now wondering how they can get Christ out of Chrismas completely and just call it winter vacation day. They'll have their day in front of God.
@fortknoxguy Actually, this and The Little Drummer Boy were on T.V. this morning at 8 a.m. I was going to get up to watch it, but slept in. Good thing we have YouTube, or I'd never see them.
@StFangofBoredom That's good. Its been gone from tv for a very long time and still seldom seen. Actually, they probably took it off tv because its so sad. A lot of little kids probably had to get counseling after seeing it. LOL
Are you for serious? This was just on ABC family last week. I'm a liberal and this is my absolute favorite Christmas special, so please, hush up and enjoy it without vomiting bullshit all over the page.
I just find it hilariously pathetic you would say something like that. It's on every single year. It's never been removed for ANY reason. It sounds like you're just reaching for any excuse to ramble on about your conspiracies. I didn't realize a holiday that was originally pagan exempt words, be they 'cursewords' or no. I was simply pointing out that what you said was exactly what it was. A pile of bull feces. Merry Christmas btw. :>
I think it's incredibly ridiculous for people to be offended by kids shows that are Christian or mention what Christmas really is about. IF they think they can get Christ out of Christmas, that's even more pathetic and ridiculous; they're losing sight of what CHristmas really is about. They showed this on ABC family just last month. No offense to anyone, but to be offended by something mentioning Christ or whatever is something I'll never understand.
@Disneyfan82 It first aired on the ABC television network in 1977 years befor they had ABC FAMILY. It used to be called Fox Family, then just plain Family Channel and before that CBN, The Chrisitain Broadcasting Network. The Family Channel has changed dramtically in the 25 years and it changed all for the worse.
@Disneyfan82 Some people have their own beliefs in the holiday. There are those who are atheists or are raised in a religion they grew up with and believe in Jesus and God in some way like he is called Allah, Master of the Universe, etc. There are those who lost, lack of faith and sometimes people blame Him for things that happen in their lives. Things happen for a reason. God and Jesus are lessons about love, unionhood, peace and freedom of choice. Some choose to be good, bad, etc.
@MisfitsToFreaxxs13 I understand. I'm Catholic as well, and I call God in my faith too, and only answering a question; I also want to include that others say "Dios" in Spanish as well.
@fortknoxguy NESTOR THE LONG AIRED CHRISTMAS DONKEY first aired on tv in 1977 on the ABC Network. It would air for two more years until finally leaving the ABC airwaves. NESTOR has been shown in syndication on various tv networks but very rarely. Perhaps not just because of it's religious overtones, but for it's depressing content. Perhaps Madelyn O'Hair, the leader of the American Atheists organizaton lobbied to have it taken off the air.
@67nairb I heard that O'Hair even lobbied to have RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER banned from tv air waves. I could be wrong though. But that being said, RUDOLPH has never been pulled off the air and O'Hair is dead, murdered by a member of her own organization.
I don't think that is the theme. I think it's more like "God does things for a reason". Everyone thought his ears were a disfigurement, but they were actually a gift.
@RainingBlackDolls I think even a horribly disfigured person wouldn't be treated as horrble as Nestor was in the story. Quite the contrary I think a disfigurement would get moore sympathy.
@RainingBlackDolls You're probably right but Nestor's story seemed far more tragic then what any boy would go through. And there were some educated people from Roman times who might've known about disabilities. Besides most Romans were not as ruthless and tyranical as depicted in Hollywood movies. They were not like Nazis. Most Roman rulers who ruled the vast territorities of the Empire were tolerant of other cultures....not always though.
@naisammon No, it's more like that just because you're different, rather it be a 'horrible disfigurement' or not doesn't mean you can't do great things. It doesn't mean you have to do them to prove yourself, it's just saying that it doesn't stop you from doing them.
@naisammon You're a douchebag!! You could say that about EVERY childhood story and cartoon. Tell me one that someone isn't laughed at, picked on, or excluded. Guess you were picked on too much as a kid...
@marirod45 What's even stranger is why the farmer and the other animals who treated so cruelly welcomed him back? How did they know about his his heroic exploit with Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem. News didn't travel fast 2,000 years ago. And why would Olaf actually care about about the birth of baby Jesus 2,000 miles from his home. BTW where in the Roman Empire did Olaf live? His name sounds Scandanavian but the Romans never ruled Europe that far north.
Thank you so much for these segments!! I love this story (although I can't understand why Nestor would return to the cruel farmer). It's a pleasure to be able to enjoy these anytime---while addressing Christmas cards!
One of the sweetest Christmas stories ever. Been over 30 years since I've seen it and it still has the same effect on me as it did then. I cry a few times during the entire story. This needs to be on DVD!
thanks so much for posting this! i have the VHS at home but i'm at school right now and had no other way to watch this... one of the best christmas movies
Rankin and Bass always did great work! Thanks for sharing Nestor with us.
In a Rudolph kind of way, it makes me sad to see cruelty displayed at another for being different and then holding that same unique being in high regard once he/she/it has done something great. It would be wonderful if they were accepted without having to accomplish great tasks to prove themselves.
@MistletoeLass Rudolf had it much easier than Nestor. Rudolf was teased alot for his red nose, but he wasn't physically abused like Nestor was and Rudolf did have three friends, Hermie the Elf and Yukon Cornelius the gold prospector who didn't mind his red nose liked him for who he was. Nestor had almost no friends in the world. The poor donkey had no father, a mother who froze to death protecting him from the elements, no relatives, nobody to care. RUDOLF is a feel good movie. Nestor isn't.
@MistletoeLass Sorry if my last post seemed callous which it wasn't, but this Nestor is just too much of a downer for the holidays. Not only for children, but for teenagers and adults as well. It's not a feel good movie imho like RUDOLF, SANTA CLAUS IS COMIN TO TOWN, A YEAR WITHOUT A SANTA CLAUS or even THE LITTLE DRUMMER BOY. This poor little donkey went through so much abuse and tragedy that no animal or human should go through. Why did Rankin-Bass produced this horribly depressing movie?
Thanks so much for sharing this. It was always my favorite Christmas special, though I cried through most of it even when I was a kid. Reading the comments by so many people who appreciate the posting of these Christmas specials, I fell so sad that the world we have created makes it so easy to be cruel and so difficult to simply be nice to each other.
Thanks very much for uploading this! I've never seen this one before... and I'm surprised! This was actually pretty good. Very sad, too... especially when his mom died, and when he heard his mom talking in the sandstorm. D:
I always look forward every year to watching this. it warms my heart, and it shows the true meaning of chrismas, the birth of Christ. The tv only has one showing of it during seanson.
Thank you for uploading this; it is my favorite holiday special.

67nairb 1 year ago
@67nairb I heard that O'Hair even lobbied to have RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER banned from tv air waves. I could be wrong though. But that being said, RUDOLPH has never been pulled off the air and O'Hair is dead, murdered by a member of her own organization.

So the theme is that if you are horribly disfigured you have to prove your worth to gain the respect of others? What a great moral.....
naisammon 2 years ago
I don't think that is the theme. I think it's more like "God does things for a reason". Everyone thought his ears were a disfigurement, but they were actually a gift.
RainingBlackDolls 2 years ago 3
@RainingBlackDolls I think even a horribly disfigured person wouldn't be treated as horrble as Nestor was in the story. Quite the contrary I think a disfigurement would get moore sympathy.
67nairb 1 year ago 3
@67nairb Probably not during the time period where this story took place, unfortunately.
RainingBlackDolls 1 year ago
@RainingBlackDolls You're probably right but Nestor's story seemed far more tragic then what any boy would go through. And there were some educated people from Roman times who might've known about disabilities. Besides most Romans were not as ruthless and tyranical as depicted in Hollywood movies. They were not like Nazis. Most Roman rulers who ruled the vast territorities of the Empire were tolerant of other cultures....not always though.
67nairb 1 year ago
@RainingBlackDolls BTW are you a donkey lover? If you have did you ever see ever seen real donkey with ears as long as Nestor's?
67nairb 1 year ago
@naisammon No, it's more like that just because you're different, rather it be a 'horrible disfigurement' or not doesn't mean you can't do great things. It doesn't mean you have to do them to prove yourself, it's just saying that it doesn't stop you from doing them.
StFangofBoredom 2 years ago 5
@naisammon You're a douchebag!! You could say that about EVERY childhood story and cartoon. Tell me one that someone isn't laughed at, picked on, or excluded. Guess you were picked on too much as a kid...

i loved it, i just finished crying. and ya, why did he go back to that cruel farmer? such an evil person.

Probably the best Chistmas special ever made. Rankin/Bass is so fabulous. I sure wish they still made them. Thanks for posting this gem.

Thanks again.

@MistletoeLass Rudolf wasn't treated as cruelly as Nestor.

@67nairb Oh I forgot to mention Clarice, Rudolf's reindeer doe friend.
