Of course it will light you up. The spark has too much 60 cycle component in it. If it was high frequency you couldn't hear it and the spark would be very warm looking and thick, not jagged.... I've seen those machines. They are an induction coil with a 60 cycle pulsating relay that opens and closes the points at 60 cycles.... Just like in old cars, with mechanical points. It's not "really" a "Tesla coil" although Tesla invented the induction coil!!! :-D

OK, matter of scale. The one I helped build was 9 ft tall, wrapped around a 2 ft dia tube 10 ft dia primary, Input was 440V 60Hz. 3600rpm 4 pole spark gap wheel increased freq to 56Khz. Homemade 1 farad capacitor, oil cooled. 440 supplied by a 300 hp 15KW diesel generator. Output above our measurement capability, calculated to be 8 million volts. Results spectacular! It threw a elect arc half an inch thick 40 ft. Hit the switch and nearly stall that diesel. Hell of a good show! Tesla sci rocks.

I must agree, yet disagree at the same time. A tesla coil usually has a tank circuit, consisting of a high voltage capacitor and primary(no, i dont think a spark gap would be in the tank circuit, because it is not inductance or capacitance, just a switch), not just a simple vibrator. But, however, a tesla coil is an air cored resonance transformer. Eh, what ever, i guess i am just undecided about this one.
