  • I'm playing this at my fathers wedding in a few weeks. I doubt I'll have a 12 string by then, so hopefully I can get away with a 6, even though it's not quite as full a sound. This video has helped me immensely, because I hadn't heard this tune until it became an obligation. I've got 2 weeks, so this was a def crash course. Thanks a lot!

  • You misidentify some of the chords. What you call a G5 is not, but s.imply a G or a G with the B string fretted at the D note. Look at a guitar chord chart. Also you are not

playing a true C9. Your effort is fine but you confuse folks with incorrect chords.

  • @gphillips6250 He is offering variations of chords. His chords are accurate. Quit being an ass and nit-picking. If you were at all an accomplished guitarist you'd realize that there are numerous variations on any guitar chord. Just enjoy this video and the song performed by a consummate musician.

  • Hey thanks for the tips. I was asked to play this song two days before a wedding so I needed to scramble and came right to you. It put me on the fast track, thank you:)

  • Ok, I have a bone to pick! If you're going to offer guitar lessons, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT expect a student to come here wanting to learn only to find that he needs to retune his guitar down a full step just so he can stay with you. That's just plain WRONG!! If you're guitar is tuned down, why don't YOU put a capo at the 2nd fret. That way you don't have to tune up and no one else needs to tune down. I'm going to go look for a better tutorial. JEEEEEZE I just don't feel like tuning and tuning.

  • @WoodenYouKnowIt

jeeeze--- over reaction is an understatement for your post- if you know how a capo works then you can capo 'your' guitar a few frets higher instead couldnt you?

  • @THARN393 You're not getting the sense of what I'm saying. Goldhat3 is teaching this song in the OPEN position but since his guitar is tuned down below standard pitch, a student that wants to learn this is forced to also tune down if he wants to play along. GET IT? If GOLDHAT3 would use the capo, any student arriving here would not have to retune to play along. I'm not saying that the STUDENT should use the capo, but rather, GOLDHAT3. THARN393 you obviously don't know shit about the guitar!

  • @WoodenYouKnowIt This is just the accurate way, in the songs original tuning. I'm sure there are other videos in standard tuning, but they won't be accurate. If you plan on playing along with the song you're gonna have to tune it anyway lol

  • Thank you Darlin - my sister taught me this when I was about 13 (she was 18) and we played it over and over (this was in the late 60s! YIKES! She's been gone for 15 years but her daughter is getting married in June and I'd love to be able to play it!

  • Great tutorial. I'm finding out that there are so many different ways that people play this song. What I found interesting is a black and white video of Paul from 1970. It's here on YouTube somewhere. It looks like he is playing the song with a capo on the 4th fret, in G.

  • your the best! of all the folks out there, bless there hearts for sharing, but I wish they all had your style of singing with the chord changes. thank you!

  • Seriously You are the best teacher I've seen on youtube! the most awesome part for someone like me with five children living at home I'm always broke and so free lessons are all I can afford. I love how you sing the lyrics with the chord changes that makes it so much easier for me. I know it takes you more time to do so I want to thank you for your willingness to share this most beautiful song ever!

  • thank man ur a life saver imma play this for my aunts wedding party thing lol

  • Thank you for the great lesson! There are many lessons on this song out there, but few are in the right key, and even fewer have the string pattern correct. I pretty much had the keys down, but the string sequence (B 342) and the small bridge between verses was extremely helpful... thanks!

  • I like the lesson..you think like I think..n combo instruction/singing

  • i've learned so many songs for you now- i'm singing/playing this at my dad's wedding so i was really excited when i typed the song name in + guitar lesson into youtube and got goldhat3 as a result!!!!

  • i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong! the whole guitar is tuned down a whole step, correct? not just a drop d tuning in which the 1st and 6th strings are tuned down to a d? i've tried both variations, and it is not sounding correct

  • Yep, I have the whole guitar tuned down a full step dbefad.

  • Thanks for the lesson in this song. I'm playing at my daughters rehearsal dinner and thought I would surprise her with this tune. I just found a really sweet Ovation Elite 12 string and it sounds incredible.I can't wait to surprise her.

  • Hey PocoPorillo, go for it! She will be surprised and thrilled.

  • I Think your not only a very accomplished guitar player , But a great Tacher as well.

  • I can't believe I can actually play this song now. Thanks!

  • Wonderful

  • Mark, I'll never tire of this one! Thank you...

  • Your B-string unison is out of tune.

  • First off I would like to thank you for this video which helped me immensely . When my daughter chose this song for her upcoming wedding in the fall, I got the lame brained idea that I might be able to play it for her at the wedding. The problem was I hadn't picked up my guitars in over 20 years! Thanks to your video I feel confident that will be ready to play at her wedding. Again I sincerely thank you as does my daughter.

  • Hey billybandaid, that's a great story, go for it! You will make your daughter proud of you. I hope I can sing this at my son's wedding one day.

  • Actually, tuning to 1 tone low for a 12 string is supposed to be correct. I think even Pete Seeger observes this.

  • Mark-in the interlude between the verses, when you transition from the C chord back to G, do you ever alter the picking pattern.? I get messed up trying to pluck the individual notes because they move from middle finger to index finger. This runs approx from 5:30 to 6:30.

  • Nope, same pattern, just sounds a little different because of the C9 chord adds the D note on the second string.

  • Great! Very Cool, Mr. G. Thank You

  • Excellent lesson - all guitar lessons should be this straight-forward. Good teacher - great 12-string song. 5 stars !!

  • 5 stars!! Incredible playing and a great voice! Nice work mate..

  • Thanks so much for sharing the tutorial! You play it great!

  • wow! this is awesome, a lot of talent

  • beautiful!!!

    wow!

i love your spirit in this song... what a great thing to see a big man singing about the most beautiful thing in the world! 5 stars!

  • Wow, this is what I've been looking for. Thank you so much

  • Thanks, Mr. Goldhat,

I now feel motivated to get a 12-string guitar.

  • thanks Mr. Goldhat.

I've always wanted to learn this song,

played like the original - now I can.

    - Larry

  • Hail to the Victors Valiant! Go Blue!!

Thanks for the lesson. I have it "mastered" it on my 6-string. I will need to borrow a 12 and give it a whirl. It sounds great on the 6 but is incredible on the 12.

Question, I want to possibly play this at my son's wedding. When is the song normally played in the course of the ceremony?

  • Yep, you need the 12 for this one. I am usually asked to play it just before the wedding party and bride comes up to the front. Go Boilers!

  • Very nicely done and very helpful. Been wanting to learn this the right way for a long time. Thank you very much!

  • Goldhat that is one awesome hat. Got the brim bent and everything. Don't lie though I bet it's not fitted.

  • Go Boilers!

  • This sounds absolutely beautiful once again a great lesson -

  • you're a really good singer and a good guitar player!

  • i really love your lessons...if i just have a 6 string with regular tuning.... what you are doing doesnt sound righton my guitar ..any suggestions?

  • I have my 12 string tuned down one full step. So the tuning low to high is DGCFAD if you want to play along.

  • you are the best!!!!

  • Thanks again, Goldhat3 Keep 'em coming. You are talented!!!!

  • Check the tuning on that 12....

  • Thanks for the tute Mark. I've been wanting to learn how to play this. I can't pick as well as you though.

  • New Twelve String, dude - you are living the dream. :-) Well done as always.

  • Very imformative. Thanks.

  • Thank You Very Much

    u da Best

    :)
