2010. The world was young and full of retards listening to rap (as I wasn't) when i first hears this song over local FM radio then.
Marty's voice captivated me immediatley as did Jormas ringing 12 string.
I loved this band from the get go and still do.
No, I don't have brain damage I just have an immense appreciation for those times and all the people who contributed to the 1960s and I wish i could have been a part of that generation.
Signe Anderson is terrific on this. What a gift she is to the music world. And yes, she still lives in Portland and plans to sing there locally again.
being born in 53, I, more or less rode the 'coat-tails' of the 60's to some extent. I would never have believed that we would evolve to where we are now...
like a Neil Young title..."Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere"... Only looking back, do I see it for the Renaissance it 'was' ... I enjoyed every minute of it, but had no idea where it was headed
or as David Crosby wrote...
"It's been a long time comin, it's gonna be a long time gone"...
@hocuspocusfocusable I was born in 52 and grew up in the Bay Area, my only regret was not going to enough concerts in the late 60's. wish I was 15 again...this song is classic & timeless... About getting old, older women don't look so old and the younger ones get younger. I still feel and think like I'm twenty....rock on.
@steve7138 There was a young lady sitting on the grass next to me at a Rainier Beer Sunbust concert in 1976. She got up to sing with Carl Smith and the Natural Gas Company. Yep, Signe Anderson. Wonder if she still lives in Portland?
@MsScoutmaster :Grace wasnt the singer onthis album. It was Signe Toly anderson.Grace joined for the next album,Surrealistic pillow & includwd the 2 Great society songs which you would know.
One the first 'albums' I actually paid for...Had to use headphones so as not to upset my parents who bought me only Dylan and Phil Ochs records. This album, Volunteers, Sgt Pepper, Doors, and Blind Faith gave my generation a brief shining moment that will not happen again while I'm still around.
Good morning, do you like sixties? Listen and pod cast my program " great sound of 60' s " on the site plumfm. Greeting and made blooper in rock and roll. Salut, vous aimez les sixties ? Ecoutez et podcatez mon émission "le super son des sixties" sur plum fm. Salut et faites gaffe au rock'n roll
I was born the year this album came out. When I listen to it its strange to think of the band without Grace in it. Signe Anderson was a competent singer, but when Grace came in and matched her voice with Marty and Paul it definitely put them squarely on the map.
@oxygen25man Signe Toly Anderson was the female vocalist whilst Skip Spence played drums. Both left the group shortly after the album's release and were replaced by Grace Slick and Spencer Dryden, respectively.
I daresay I was rockin in my cot to this one. Iguess I'll have been 3 / 4 ish. Real groovey man, far out etc. Listening to all the wckd moogers of the day, may have had an influence on the way I am 2day, hmmmm. Best leave it at that.
An excellent track btw.....Thanx, really appreciated.
Wonderful song. I try to look past the drugs of the culture, and think of the music. I spent time in San Francisco, 1967-1974, and later, some of that as a pre-teen.
Very unique music. By far, my favorite of the SF sound, although Moby Grape's first album is great too. Apparently Marty has his own Youtube channel with interesting interviews.
@JeffersonJukebox, one of my favourites of this band. Didn't Grace record this under Pre-Plane band, Great Society? Also, do you have any information about this album, Japanese pressing? Thanks.
only song i ever liked by jefferson airplane, even though i was born and raised in sf. maybe i was too young back then to understand this group. but all the drugs connotations and harshness of the other songs turned me off.
A song that epitomizes the purest emotion of trippin' out on real love, letting it totally, completely consume you and you don't care 'cause it's just such an incredible mind-bending rush. Marty Balin just lets it all hang out as if he's putting his all and even more into his profession of feelings. They just aren't making tuneage like this anymore...
Does this song take me back! Getting ready for school and listening to it on WABC am radio with Herb Oscar Anderson. Polka dot shirts, bell bottoms and nehru jackets, holy cow!
In response to IaSg14: So... you want an Airplane song that is technically difficult with some serious finger- pickin'? Check out Embryonic Journey off of Surrealistic Pillow. It's an acoustic solo but Jorma Kaukonen really impresses with his technical ability. Think of Yes' " Mood for a Day" which is also a beautiful guitar solo of the same style. If you can play either one of these songs with proficiency, then you are a very good player indeed! Good luck, but "Freebird" it ain't.
I need help finding a Jefferson Airplane song and I figured fans of the band on a Youtube video could maybe help me out. I don't know if one exists but have they ever done a song with REALLY difficult or consistently tricky guitar through it. For difficulty, I'd say "Free Bird" solo difficult.
If anyone can direct me to a song like that then I'll be truly grateful. Thanks.
pyrophore I was just thinking the same thing. I'd heard them do it live but when it came out the local SF AM it was a rush & the first of our new SF sound to be on the radio & before all the other people came to SF when it was still local & summer of 1966 was the real SF Summer of Love.
It was magic. Everybody really believed in what was happening. This very first Airplane long player was THE signature sound. The San Francisco SOUND. Everything else traced its kool back to THIS album.
The "Jefferson Airplane Takes Off" was orders of magnitude above EVERYTHING that followed or went before
@pyrophore : just know that so many people born after this time agree with you! I was born in '66 and wish I was old enough to have realized this special time you lived through.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@pyrophore I'll say brain damage! Hippie music SUCKS beyond belief, unless you are drugged out of your mind, which makes you hallucinate that what you're hearing is rockin' and happenin', when in REALITY it's not...it's the drugs warping your sense of whatever.
@calwaite There undboubtedly was music made at that time, even by JA themselves, that did "suck" as you say. Course it's all subjective and really has very little to do with drugs. As Louie Armstrong once said; 'There are two kinds of music; good and bad." For me, I enjoy music from Link Wray to Rachmaninoff, with plenty of JA in there, drug free or not.
@pyrophore rock groups that have more than one songwriter in the group like the JA and the moody blues are more interesting if you think its sucky than listen to perry como
JUST CURIOUS is the album cover an LSD tab or a stamp o.0

well it does have the stamp ink in the corner and the zigzag line isn't usually that fine :oo
i'd say it's just a stamp.
