No one in the record industry would give her a second look precisely because they didn't think she LOOKED the part of a pop star (tho they were happy to hire her to write songs for other pop stars). As for AutoTune, she uses it as a specific vocal effect, the same way a guitarist will use a wah-wah pedal or other effect to manipulate the sonics of hir instrument. She doesn't use it to cover a bad voice.

The first time I saw her perform live wasn't a good experience. I think it was on American Idol. Many people were saying she was not breathing properly when singing.
