  • This is a strange exercise as it would be far easier for a light person to do it than a strong person - due to the body weight difference.

    I'm not sure if that technique is right either, as I've read that only the hands should touch the bar. It appears like their chest is touching the bar.

  • I held on for 72 seconds when I was in 7th grade. I didnt work out, I didnt do sports, just played video games. My arms and chest, even my legs went numb because I wasnt able to take in as much oxygen, when I was expending it.

  • Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get started for a nine year old girl who needs to do this for a PFT exam. Right now she can't hold it at all although she is not much overweight. How to work up to it? TIA

  • She lacks sufficient strength to hold herself up thus needs to do strength exercises. Pull-downs are the classic exercise, but if all you have is a chinup bar, assisted declines (slowly lower herself from top with assistance from you or chair) will do it. Start with 2 or 3 sets of four (wait a couple of minutes between sets), build up to 3x8 with no assist other than getting up, then she should be ready to hold herself hanging. -Coach

    Surprised myself how difficult it is to do this (55 yr old man). I can't hold it for more than a few seconds at this point until the pain becomes more than an annoyance!

  • wow i can easily beat this, and i am 95 lbs. in the marines we have to get 70 seconds to get a 100 on that portion, so what these ladies are doing is nothing considering its a competition.

    Smallness doesn't make a difference. If you are 90lbs odds are you are super weak, which means you would still have to work out. If you are 195lbs you might weigh a lot but even then, if you work out you can hold yourself up. It all equals out.

  • Yeah I've heard of that way of doing it. I think most folks do it this way because it's easier. But it's not easy no matter HOW you do it. :)

  • k because im trying out for the B.E.A.P program (for those of you that don't know it it is the birchmount elite athletics program, to get in you must have a sport at provincal level. im going for soccer and 1500m.) my trainer makes me hold eye level :L ( i got 1:07 on my frist ttry :D

  • This exercise works your biceps, you're meant to try & keep your body absolute straight as possible without swinging & hold on as long as you can, without just letting go. Fight against gravity & don't just let go of the bar, let yourself lower to the ground as slowly as possible. If you get me?! This is a great exercise to do to finish up after a bicep workout, really makes your biceps grow. :)
