@freshhh1994 No, it's not a castrato. They've gone out of vogue :) It's a counter-tenor, which means that he has a normal speaking voice but he sings with a falsetto.
SixthTreeAtNoon: He did not just say who his favourite composer was. The only thing he said is that Bach was the reason he became a musician.
In one interview with Gould he said his favourite composer was Gibbons, because Gibbons' music could touch him more than any other music. But he also mentioned Bach was more important to him when it came to technique.
can anybody explain why he thought "Mozart was a bad composer who died too late?" Beethoven, Haydn, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Ravel, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and other Mozart-admirers would have laughed and spat on his face.
Let's just say that Bach is considered the greatest composer EVER for good reason. He singly originated a such a vast quantity of music of such richness, complexity, and beauty that he has not been matched. Mozart is good, but compared to the grandeur of Bach he's just pissing in the wind, whereas Bach IS the wind, the moon, the stars, and earth and the entire universe singing all at once in perfect harmony. Compared to Bach, Mozart looks rather quaint.
so, that justifies his statement that Mozart was a bad, overrated composer who died too late. Imagine yourself dying at 35.
Music is not all about comparing between composers. Mozart greatly admired Bach, received a lot of influence from him, but one mustn't forget Mozart also influenced future composers, like Hummel, Schumann, Beethoven, Chopin.
Are you suggesting Gould was so talented he had the right to say things only geniuses like Bach was allowed to?
Everything you said of Bach, could be said of Mozart' late symphonies, especially Jupiter. As many people say, art is largely subjective. Why don't you actually discuss something meaningful, like the significance of Bach's individual works, rather than repeating those similes, generalized comparisons, which are very unoriginal and said/heard everywhere . You're only trying to force us to decide Bach's the greatest. Indeed he was great, but I don't like how you "simply say we all must follow"
harpsipiano + countertenor

Very nice, although technically speaking Bach wasn't Gould's favourite composer... But still a very nice video.

On Mozart . . . A little quote from Glenn Gould:
" It wasn't that Mozart died too soon . . . it was that he didn't die soon enough ".

Glenn Gould NEVER thought Bach was the greatest. He insisted that the obscure Orlando Gibbons was the greatest composer of all time.
