I would amend my previous statement to say, that this isn't always the case that Red Savinas are 500,000 SHU, and what you ate may very well be around 300,000 SHU. There are a host of variables that contribute to heat, or lack thereof, starting with the seeds, and continuing throughout the growing process. Not all Red Savinas are created equal. But speaking in general terms, the former world record holder for hottest pepper was a Red Savina just over 500,000 SHU.

Not to be too anal here, but strictly speaking the Red Savina Hab is more on the order of 500,000 SHU, where the more common Orange Hab is around 300,000 SHU.

Also, (in very recent developments)both the Naga Morich and Bhut Jolokia have been surpassed on the Scoville chart by more exotic varieties like The Trinidad Scorpion Butch T Strain, and the Trinidad Douglah (a 7 Pod/Pot variety). Most of the 7 Pods, if cultivated correctly are higher in SHU than the Naga Morich.

@FireAlchemy75, actually the tests that claim Red Savinas are anywhere close to 500k were bad. The average Red Savina is 248k, and Dave's Gourmet was unable to find any hotter than 300k. The average orange habanero is about 200k so the Red Savinas are hotter, but other habaneros are definitely hotter like the Caribbean Reds for one.

eat a consistently hot chile, not a red savina. the one they tested to get the 577k record they could never duplicate. actually most red savinas are in the low 300 range, probably high 200s. eat a fatalli or a devils tongue. see how that treats you. i have grown all of those including the jolokia and they are consistently hot as hell unlike the savina which vary alot..

Well... usually people talk about "Nagas" and the difference between Dorset and Jolokia is around 50-100k SHU (ok, that's a lot) and the difference between a normal hab to Dorset is nearly a whopping 700k.
