I don't really care for his singing. I much prefer the movie version with Gerry Butler as Erik the Phantom. They weren't bad, but I just couldn't get into it like I did with the soundtrack to the theatrical version.

@audiesgirl yeah Schumacher did want younger actors and Andrew Lloyd Webber agreed so long as they did their own singing. Their orginal idea was to do the film a couple of years after POTO first came out on stage and have Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman starring in it but it ended up, obviously, being made many years later so they couldn't use them because Schumacher thought it would be better for the film if the characters were younger rather than older :)

there are many male singers who've played the phantom for the live performances that although they were professionally trained, etc., their voices weren't as powerful. atleast banderas put some "oomph" behind it! he had more passion and presence than steve harley (who sounded kind of wimpy). the phantom is a "villain"...he's supposed to be dominating and some of the performers over the years haven't delivered that. banderas did.

It's called the british linking "R". If you study accents usually this happens when a word ends with vowel and the next word starts with another vowel. In american accent it would have been a linking "Y" like "Opera-Yis-here" but for some british it will be "Opera-Ris-here"... So it's an accent issue, mate. hehehe
