So Barbra Streisand is a better director (in her first movie doing so) than Ingmar Bergman????? Yeah right HFPA!!! No wonder why your awards are widely considered a joke!!!
@dwarflover63 No question about that; the score was composed FOR Barbra. As far as the believability factor, I think it's interesting that over time Yentl has more or less been marketed/promoted as a 'fable' or 'fantasy' which is smart because it allows skeptics like me to not take the film so seriously. I've tried to enjoy Yentl, I really have ... but other than seeing it in the theatre (the day it came out) ... it's my least favorite Babs film including Hello Dolly. BTW, hated Fiddler too.
@dwarflover63 Aside from her uber-fans who are unable to constructively critique some of her work, many of us feel that Barbra herself was miscast. I didn't buy Barbra Streisand as a boy for one second. Legend has it that Yentl could not get financing unless Barbra agreed to star (and sing), so she caved and did her best to pull it off. Too bad really, because the score and cinematography is as we all know STUNNING.
@dwarflover63 The same way Fred Astaire was cast in THE TOWERING INFERNO and Judy Garland was cast in JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG and Robin Williams was cast in DEAD POETS SOCIETY and GOOD WILL HUNTING. Only because an actor is known for one thing (singing, comedy, dancing), does not mean they can't branch out into something atypical to their best known talent. Amy Irving sings also, it does not mean that she had to sing in YENTL as well. What a boring and repetitive cliche.
The academy (composed of 6000 professionals in various facets of the movie industry) are collectively stupid, sexist, and jealous? You probably also believe that the entire LA police force all got together to set up and frame OJ. Besides, you're leaving out one minor detail; as a movie, Yentl sucked. Great score and cinematography I agree, but a lousy (and badly miscast) movie.
I remember this night well. Interestingly, this was one of those rare occassions when the Foreign Press winner (Barbra) wasn't a pre-curser for the Academy Award. Yentl did well for music, but virtually ignored in every other catagory. I'm a huge Streisand fan, but had to agree with the Academy on this one.
@mikesterSTLMO Well, Barbra's movie sure is far more memorable than Bruce Beresford's TENDER MERCIES or Mike Nichols' SILKWOOD; she should have been nominated instead of those 2; THE RIGHT STUFF was and is an overrated and overproduced flop; YENTL deserved PICTURE, DIRECTOR and CINEMATOGRAPHY nominations, as well as MANDY PATINKIN for his forceful and balanced performance as AVIGDOR. If you are a true Streisand fan, you would not be agreeing shit with the stupid, sexist and jealous ACADEMY.

I love her so much. She is the reason why I decided to choose acting as my career. Her, Clint Eastwood, and Bruce Lee are my icons.

@dwarflover63 Why would you need to add Amy Irving? She WAS nominated for an OSCAR for YENTL.
