Vibrato is usually a cheap way of having something sound "nice."
Listen to Toscanini's 1929 recording with The New York Philharmonic of Haydn's "Clock" Symphony; the whole thing is performed with the strings NEVER using any vibrato and the strings are wonderful.
When you can play a piece expressively WITHOUT using vibrato, then you are a REAL player!
Vibrato, while necessary, is all too often a "fallback" cop-out of 2nd rate playing and singing.
@SatchmoSings I listened to this Toscanini and Haydn recording and it's wonderful! Was this piece meant as a preliminary tutorial for writing symphonies though? cuz at the top it says "Symphony 101."
@gotatochigs314 I got a good laugh out of your response; too many "oh-so-serious" people here who marked you as spam; I give you a hearty "thumbs up" and wish I could give you more!
@SatchmoSings Every string player in the world uses vibrato, it's a form of expression...of course you don't use much vibrato in a Haydn symphony, Haydn's music is not supposed to have a huge amount of expression, it's supposed to have a nice clean sound, kind of like background music. Watch Rostropovich play cello, he's possibly one of the best cellists of all time, he always uses vibrato, It's not a "cheap" way to sound nice, if anything, it's a professional way.
@SatchmoSings I'm studying my masters in music performance on cello, I have learnt from many professional cellists and I have played many concertos and many symphonies, I know A LOT about music, and vibrato is a significant part about ANYONE'S playing. I played a Haydn concerto once, and yes, I didn't use vibrato, but that is the style. I have also played Tchaikovsky symphonies, and I used a lot of vibrato. Maybe you should do your research before you criticize something so significant in music.
@SatchmoSings Wait, I do have The Internet. But you should have known that, cuz I wouldn't be able to comment on this video without it ;P
I tried what you said, but it didn't work, cuz the dictionary site doesn't know what verbato is, and it says that "fastly" became obsolete in the 19th century, which is a long time ago. Google thinks that Verbato is a last name. Maybe someone with this name invented a style of cello playing?
Horrible. I suppose it tells you what vibrato IS. By the way, he actually doing it correctly. You'll see his entire arm is moving as unit. trying to move only the hand of the finger is impossible in the long term applications of being a cellist.
Don't press too hard with your thumb on the back of the neck. I remember reading an article once that said that you should be able to put a grape in between your thumb and the neck, and it shouldn't burst.
That made my day. Cello vibrato involves movement from elbow to the fingers in a swiveling motion, not the wrist as shown in this video. I also find it amusing how erect his index finger was when he was using "vibrato" with his middle finger.
Vibrato itself is really 'arm' vibrato. If you relax you will do arm vibrato naturally. Anyway vibrato is all about up and down motion. The up and down motion will LOOK like you are twisting a doorknob. Practice making wide/deep vibrato, with little, slow vibrations. Then you will be able to do fast/wide vibrato later on. Not unlike this guy, who makes short wavelength vibrato. Make sure you focus on the arm and shoulder (joints) and not on the wrist. Hopefully I helped out more than this guy.
ok people u dont have o be SO mean, in my opinion everyne does it differently and it sounds like a vibrato a little relaxation may help but its fine...trust me I KNOW people who really DONT know how to do it
you need to relax your thumb for doing vibrato, right, but also for any kind of playing in cello! if you dont relax your thumb it would finally hurt. however, this is a great help, thanks!
move it up and down, as if we were gonna be drinkin'

That's a helluva an insult from someone that knows little about music; no wonder you endorse and justify such a cheap, overused technique!

@gotatochigs314 One day, maybe, you'll have something called "The Internet."
When that happens, you'll be able to look up stuff rather than ask quesitons that demand a spoon-fed answer to you.

@gotatochigs314 I don't know what "verbato" is either and I still think you need to get an internet connection.

The way one learns vibrato is crucial and can so easily go wrong. So to show it in such a slap dash way - (& incorrectly!) is really irresponsible.
