Too bad he never secured the position for 3 seconds after either sweep, or he would've been ahead for the rest of the match, could've played more safely and gotten the win on points.

If Telles hadn't used the turtle guard, Jacare most likely would have smashed him. This match just goes to show what someone can do with an offensive turtle guard, regardless of who the opponent is. It's the best guard out there for wrestlers and Judoka, too.

@tuccake It Depends on who is performing the Turtle guard. If it's a high level elite BJJ practitioner also, say, Roger Gracie, Marcello Garcia, Jacare and others, i don't care how extensive your wrestling background is, you're not smashing shit. And i mean that in the most respectful way.

My instructor said I reminded him of Telles because I don't force anything and play guard, I'm easy and wait for openings so he told me to watch him and emulate. I must say though, I wish I had a more exciting game.

telles the peoples champion! telles is a sports grappling champion, so the turtle guard helps him win fights in that context so fair play to him. i love my jiu jitsu, but i wouldn't grapple full stop in a street fight, but on the mat its a great position because a lot of people dont know how to deal with an attacking turtle guard because you don't come across it that often. if you don't belive in its effectiveness come down to pedro bessa (a telles BB) jiu jitsu Bristol and find out!

No disrespect to the skills of Jacare or Eduardo, but gimme a break. The beginning of the fight made me cringe just in the same way I cringe whenever Judoka turtle and stall to make time to for the referee to stand them up.

There are some things that should have no place in reality or in effective martial arts such as BJJ. No disrespect intended.

I understand it's sport BJJ, and I criticize aspects of it in the same way I criticize "competitive/sports" Judo (I do both arts, btw). There are things which do not compute in "alive" combat sports, period.

Criticism =/= disrespect. Lack of criticism =/= respect. There is a big difference between respect and uncritical nutriding... IMO.

What makes Eduardo Telles' Turtle guard so dangerous is that attacking with the standard back attacks (Kata Hajime , Clock Choke, jumping on the back for RNC, ect) will get you swept, knee barred or arm locked.
