Too bad he never secured the position for 3 seconds after either sweep, or he would've been ahead for the rest of the match, could've played more safely and gotten the win on points.
If Telles hadn't used the turtle guard, Jacare most likely would have smashed him. This match just goes to show what someone can do with an offensive turtle guard, regardless of who the opponent is. It's the best guard out there for wrestlers and Judoka, too.
@tuccake It Depends on who is performing the Turtle guard. If it's a high level elite BJJ practitioner also, say, Roger Gracie, Marcello Garcia, Jacare and others, i don't care how extensive your wrestling background is, you're not smashing shit. And i mean that in the most respectful way.
My instructor said I reminded him of Telles because I don't force anything and play guard, I'm easy and wait for openings so he told me to watch him and emulate. I must say though, I wish I had a more exciting game.
2 points came from the takedown a few seconds before it. When they both stood up and Jacare took him back down the ref scored it, even though Jacare was on top to begin with.
haha okay, but that is his own fault, and not violating any rules. watch their mundials match again, he clearly ran away, a clear violation. they are both amazing jiu jitsu players.
I Think neither you or dklee04 do bjj, just enjoy it, but if you try to do one SANSAO roll, you will stop discussing about others jujiteiros life in foruns like these! PEACE and Salve Jiu-jitsu brasileiro
show me a fight in the streets where you have a ref, announcers, and a grand prize of 10,000 and ill consider not using these techniques. Its the same as calling NBA players sissys because they call fouls. Bottom line is these gentlemen know enough basic street style to defend themselves...but this is strictly BJJ with NO striking. : )
Are you suggesting Pride or UFC because I watch both. The amazing thing is that you are still not allowed to kick a down fighter. I am a jiu jitsu practioner, and I will still agree turtle guard is more of a competition oriented technique, not relative to a street fight, but I do not agree with people comparing sport with a real life situation.
telles the peoples champion! telles is a sports grappling champion, so the turtle guard helps him win fights in that context so fair play to him. i love my jiu jitsu, but i wouldn't grapple full stop in a street fight, but on the mat its a great position because a lot of people dont know how to deal with an attacking turtle guard because you don't come across it that often. if you don't belive in its effectiveness come down to pedro bessa (a telles BB) jiu jitsu Bristol and find out!
Yeah he can be effective but this a sport jiu jitsu fight, the guys competing for a medal aren't thinking "Shit this wouldn't work in the street, I better not use it."
Clock Choke using the guy's lapel rather than collar.Oh,and another thing, I kindof agree that the "turtle guard" is not very respectable.I mean, isn't Jiu Jitsu a self defense art-ultimately? How can you justify a position that, in a fight would leave you vulnerable to knees and elbows with no defense? yeah, he can survive, but can he really attack or be effective?
Your mixing Gracie jiu jitsu, what helio gracie originally intended it to be, and What we call Brazilian Jiu jitsu-the sport aspect=/= the self defense aspect
No disrespect to the skills of Jacare or Eduardo, but gimme a break. The beginning of the fight made me cringe just in the same way I cringe whenever Judoka turtle and stall to make time to for the referee to stand them up.
There are some things that should have no place in reality or in effective martial arts such as BJJ. No disrespect intended.
Dude this event wasn't meant to be a real-life like fight like UFC. This is SPORT BJJ. You say no disrespect intended but you still did disrespect by saying that.
I understand it's sport BJJ, and I criticize aspects of it in the same way I criticize "competitive/sports" Judo (I do both arts, btw). There are things which do not compute in "alive" combat sports, period.
Criticism =/= disrespect. Lack of criticism =/= respect. There is a big difference between respect and uncritical nutriding... IMO.
Im guessing ur a virgin.. since u think this is sex.. obviously u dont know a real fight form sex. Jiu-jitsu is the most effective martial art in the world. and if u mistake it for sex..the your obviously retarded or just a loser nerd whos a virgin and doesnt do any men sports that take skill to do such as Jiu-Jitsu
Werd. It was a pretty technical match between two great rollers. Both stayed really compact and firm in their positions so that to peeps that aren't into BJJ/Sub it might be hard for them to appreciate what was going on.
Thanks Austin! As for Xandel and Saulo...yes, they too are great...BUT, Xande ONLY just BARELY beat Roger by ONE ADVANTAGE! Roger ALWAYS SUBS OR DOMINATES Xande...so I call that last Absolute, lucky for Xande
I'm looking forward to Nino's big comeback at this year's world's. I think he's a wildcard to win middleweight. May also benefit CB more now that he's back primarily to ground training.
That was a clock choke because he didn't have a half nelson applied with one arm, and he clocked his body forward to apply the pressure.
Roger Gracie and Jacare are two of the top submission guys in the world with Marcelo Garcia being the P4P King in my opinion.
What makes Eduardo Telles' Turtle guard so dangerous is that attacking with the standard back attacks (Kata Hajime , Clock Choke, jumping on the back for RNC, ect) will get you swept, knee barred or arm locked.
brazilianjj do you even train? Telles turtle guard was amazing against Roger at ADCC. and yes i'm being sarcastic. telles was tapped in under a minute
2:31 Turtle guard sweep #1
4:02 Turtle guard sweep #2
Too bad he never secured the position for 3 seconds after either sweep, or he would've been ahead for the rest of the match, could've played more safely and gotten the win on points.

I thought Jacare choked him. Points didn't matter anyway.

you are correct. but the ref should still do his job properly.

yeah roger gracie. twice!
archigiant 4 years ago
actually they are split 1 to 1. Roger beat him in ADCC and Jacare beat Roger in Mundials with a broken arm.
dklee04 4 years ago
everyone knows jacare should have been disqualified for leaving the mat and then running away from roger for the last minute or so. the ref was shite
archigiant 4 years ago
And the ref distracted Jacare enough in ADCC 2005 finals and Roger took Jacare's back. So they are still even.
