Hank Marvin got an honorable mention in Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists issue as a forgotten master.. I think they would have been overshadowed by the Ventures, no pun intended, if they tried to make it over here. This in spite of their careers being coincidental. Cliff made it over here eventually, for awhile anyway.
Well spotted, I think what happened was Freddie Starr sneaked in the Shads dressing room, took out some special slow drying 1:34 glue what he stole from the F.B.I. special weapons department then proceeded to spread this under Bruce's stage shoes while no one was around and making sure it would take effect at exactly 1:34 into the song, Or it could have been Bruce doing it on purpose because of Hank messing the song up. I bet there was some arguing after that performance... Good fun though.
It is hard to believe, but the Shadows and the Beatles were exactly the same ages. The truth is, while the Beatles were in Hamburg, the teenage Shadows along with Cliff were having hit records. The original bass player, Jet Harris, discovered Jimmy Page...he plays lead guitar on the Jet Harris hit, "Diamonds"....from Dec. of 63.
The best group on earth, we should stimulated our kids to play this kind of music again.Starting some groups at school and let them take lessons for guitar, this may never die.
Best thing in british rock til the beatles rolled along. One of the few artistes worth turning up the radio for. Anyone know which show this is? I can't think of any UK pop ones that were live except "Oh Boy" and it sure ain't that. Maybe one of the variety shows like Billy Cotton or Morecambe & Wise? Great clanger by Hank at 10.14.55.
@CliffShads they took some influence from them but for the most part their biggest influence was from The Ventures plus some merseyside bands already in existence
@ptpop Not really. The Beatles at first were pretty unco-ordinated on stage, not synchronised & professional as The Shadows had been. Without taking anything away from either band, I doubt there was much crossover.
It would seem so but John Lennon actually despised the Shadows. Reluctantly, under the guidance of Brian Epstein, he knew that the Beatles would have to adopt a more clean cut image to appeal to the masses. The rest is history.
thankyou for posting, does anyone know if theres a video from the period of the shads playing Apache live on the show?, but with Hank playing lead and not Cliff trying to?
Hi Jimmy--Have you seen the "Cliff/Apache" video yet?? It's definitely on you-tube. Keep Searchin for Cliff and The Shadows If you have problems get back to me and I'll give you the YouTube Reference.

Anyone know what model VOX amps they're using? It must be way too early for them to be in the AC series.

@bassman619 I think they were ac15's T.V fronts..cool looking amps, some say these are better than the ac 30's.

Hank is the best. But it looks funny to see him fumble for the trem- arm so many times. I`m glad he now keeps it steady in his hand while playing.
And most of us players try to do it as well.

Didn't The Beatles model themselves after The Shadows style on stage?
ptpop 1 year ago 9
Yes, the Beatles did. The Shadows started their careers in 1958, they were the first British rockband and they set an example!!

Only real difference was that The Shadows could actually play their instruments.

@yardbirdmackay Yeah of course, cos the best group of all time couldn't play.Take your head out of your ass and you'll actually hear it. Then talk.
P.S Shadows rule too
