  • Is the telephone amplifier overkill? Couldn't one just use a multimeter ?

  • @sombersolitude Sure you can use a multimeter, oscilloscope or frequency counter but sometimes I find my audio amp trick with an inductive loop is helpful to do quick checks with out having to touch my probes to the circuit. Sometimes I like to attach an inductive loop in series with a diode to my meter probes and quickly run the coil/inductive loop over my switching transformer because high frequency oscillations can't be heard with my audio amp.

  • Thanks so much Grants Pass

  • Very interesting, thanks Dave

  • hi there i have a 32" lcd tv when i turn the tv on the screen comes on but i can not get anything on the screen and some times the screen flicker. how can i fix this. thanks

  • Dave, where do i scoop up the neon light you discuss in this video? i've been trying to track one down but have run into dead ends?

  • @jstrebe I still run across neon lights in old electronics gadgets. They often put them inside small switches to illuminate the switch. Sometimes you also find them in very old TVs as well. They can operate right off the 110 line but you need to use a resistor or it will blow up.

If you don't have any luck finding one locally let me know and I can send you one.

  • DAMN!! Flyback transformers!!! DAMN!!!! U fixing oldschool TVs for real!

  • great tips thanks.

  • Thank you Dave !! Its not often that people are willing to help others so thank you and thanks for sharing.Tec

  • Thanks Grants Pass. Its really beneficial. Please tell me how can i make the Telephone amplifier which tests frequencies as u shown in your video. Please help me out.

  • @Luckypk001 Any amplifier should work. you can use an old stereo or some computer speakers with a built in amp. This only works with low frequency switching such as when the power supply is in the stand by mode. For the higher frequency switching such as when power supply is in the run position it's best to have a meter with a frequency counter. You can use a regular multimeter by attaching a coil in series with a diode across your meter probes and placing it near your switching transformer.

  • @Luckypk001 does your friends have books on how to fix old tv?CRT?

  • @prence1725 Mike's TV tips has loads of CRT TVs but they are case histories not how to books.

  • thank you for this video and tv repair tips..

  • This fixed my problem, and I thank you very much. Polaroid(tm), should be ashamed for charging $275.00(us),for a $4.00 repair. 2 replaced caps. and my tv was like new.

  • I have a toshiba LCD 1080p regza!....and the pix is all mess up!.. their us nothing but color lines!..they say is not fixable!..they say is a LCD problem that I need to change the whole LCD!...and it cost just like new tv!..what do you recomend??..thanks

  • @xxsurcentralxx Sadly the display on the new TVs often go bad. Color lines can also come from a bad ribbon cable or driver board but the driver board is permanently attached to the LCD display and very difficult to repair.

  • My LCD TV is not showing picture but theres sound and the screen comes on but shows nothing except the blue screen showing that its on. What can I do??

  • @vicmanm010 I can't guess but it sounds as though the video signal isn't reaching the analog to digital converter. Make sure your not overlooking the simple things first like a bad cable or connection to the video input.

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs Well I've checked everything and one thing I forgot to mention is that it doesn't show the menu screen either, just the blue screen.

  • @vicmanm010 Is the sound working Okay? No one can guess at your problem with 100 percent certainty and doing voltage tests is the best place to start but I have heard of this symptom from the T-con board going bad amongst other possibilities.

    Dave

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs the sound is good thats just the problem that theres no picture

  • @vicmanm010 I can't guarantee what the problem is but it sounds like a possible T-Con board problem. Did you check to see if there is power going to the T-con board? This board is very static sensitive so if you test is I suggest a ground wearing a ground strap.

  • @GrantsPassTVRepairs Ok well I'm going to try that and thank you very much for your help.

  • i have to ask my tv is a phillips tv 27 in it just started with the tv screen is shrinking from 27 to 24in do you think the tube is going bad i did some test and no change on the screen on the tv still the same test preformed is disconnected cable and tv screen the same also brought up menu and its in the center of the tv as always on top of the picture

  • hi your videos have been vary helpful, i know little about electronics and only work on my own electronics at home. my question is for a do-it-your salfer can i get caps at radio shack, and what do the numbers mean on the caps. thanks

  • @billspcclinic The numbers on a capacitor represent the amount of energy they can store and what voltage they can handle. What you see as a (uf) actually stands for microfarad. There is also an indication of the temperature they can handle. You can use Radio Shack capacitors if the capacitance and voltage is correct but I don't think they sell the high temperature capacitors which are often recommended. Often times you will see a 105 degrees on the cap. This is its temperature rating.

  • Thanks for the video... nicely done.

  • hey there prof.! do you have any idea what to do if my samsung plasma has one chime / one click & still wont turn on? capacitors look perfect, have checked them. thanks!

  • hey there, i really like your video, you do have some very interesting tips, i myself dabble in electronic repair and would like to learn as much as i possibly can about it. you seem like you know alot about electronics in general, do you ever build your own electronics? or work on other electronic devices? and if you make a course i would sign up. thanks.

  • @vigholate Oh yes, I have built several electronic gadgets. My first fascination with electronics was a crystal radio my uncle built me as a small boy. From there I soon found my self interested in Amateur radio. There is probably a Amateur radio club in just about every city. If you enjoy experimenting with electronics you might enjoy attending one of their meetings. Most hams are generally very helpful when they see someone interested in furthering their understanding of electronics.

  • When i turn on my tv it work fine after one minute it goes offfff and then on then later is working fine what it woul be the problem please help me!!!!!

    HDTV RCA 52 Inches

  • @betto2017 It's hard to guess at a problem of this nature but I would check for bad solder connections using a times 10 high powered magnifying glass. I would also see if the problem is temperature related buy slightly warming the circuit boards using a hair dryer. This can often indicate a bad capacitor. Ideally you need to check your capacitors using an ESR cap tester.

  • Dave, I enjoyed what you have broadcasted. I want to learn more and willing to purchase instructional info. if you offer it. Thanks.

  • @jasonconnors10

The only study material I offer at this time are the ebooks mentioned in the info section of my videos.

  • how could i get in touch w/ you dave.

  • @oreocookieshake

If you look at the info section of my videos you will find my phone number.

  • Hi Dave how could I get in touch with you . do you have a website?

  • Wonderful and Helpful Video

  • it's good information you give, but could you not try to make a video were you actualy repair a tv.

  • Thank you for this video! the hair dryer brought my Toshiba 42hp82 back to life. now to get the new caps in. I will have to utilize the other tricks you have mentioned. Mike, you are a very wise man when it comes to tv's.

  • @dmvue Good luck on the repair.

    Dave

  • u kno ur videos are just gr8. but i wud like to tell u my prob. i have a SAMSUNG LCD and the problem is supposedly with the panel. the colors on the screen have gotten white. as in the colors on the screen hv just faded. is there ne way how i can fix my LCD

  • @DISGUSTEDATIT

Sound like you could have a bad capacitor on your main board but its hard to guess with TV problems.

  • hey dave, where did you buy the device to check capacitor? thanks

  • @PhatQ45TT1

I'm using the EDS-88A Cap Analyzer Made by Electronic Design Specialists. Their phone is 561 487-6103

I'm pretty happy with it and I especially like the tweezers style probes. I was told the Blue ESR Capacitor tester might be an equally good choice at about half the cost, and I suppose you could make your own tweezers for it. I hope to compare the blue ESR tester to my own one day.

You will need to find their contact info on the internet.

  • great repair tips! i wish u were in my area, u would for sure get my business...my tv just broke..does your magic book say anything about a samsung LN52A750R1F problems? my backlight and sound are the only thing that works

  • This sort of thing is impossible to guess at, but since it seems to get better after warming up you might want to see if it comes on quicker in a warm room. If so this would suggest possible bad capacitors.

  • cool videos, learnt a few things too, keep em coming. Be great if you done a course !!

  • Love what you are doing. I have a sony lcd and after about 1.5 hours of viewing 90% of the screen goes blank. I am 99% sure is its heat related. Can you give me any advice on what components are most likely to fail due to heat.

  • Your symptom sounds like its related to your inverter board. Best

  • Comment removed

  • Often times bad solder connections can act up from heat.

    Check out your inverter board.

  • Thanks for your advice but I don't think it's the inverter board. From what I understand, the inverter board powers the back lights, my lights aren't the problem, 90% of the screen goes black with white lines/shapes moving through it. The light stays on continuously.

  • Dave I am a fellow repair tv repairman I have been in for over 20 years .I love what you are doing here I have thought of doing it my self .I use the freeze spray and hair dryer all the time .

  • Nice video dude...I use to repair TVs back in the day but now moved into IT....do you find modern TVs easier to repair than the older ones? when I say modern I mean the LCDs and Plasmas

  • I really like the fact that the new TVs are not as heavy as the older ones, but I find the older TV sets were far easier to work on because I trained on them for so many years. Now I'm having to learn so many new things.
