Wow, even though I'm not a Bengali, I salute those students and other Benglis who gave up their lives for their mother tongue. I should be more respectful towards my mother tongue, Punjabi. Love from India.
Even today in Bangladesh, there is NO linguistic freedom in Bangladesh. Regional language speakers such as Sylhetis and Chittagongi's are discriminated against in the 'official' media and in education and the jobs market.
The oppression of Pakistan was replaced after 1971 with cultural oppression from Dhaka based peoples.
so did my dad,my dad was in that indebendence war,he told everything that happened, i felt so sorry 4 the people who died in that war, but without them, we woul have been beaten and now, us bengalis, we would of been speaking urdu as our language, but thankz 2 the people who was in the war, we can speak our own language.
Ekushey February celebrates the ppl who died to preserve Bangla language. However, most Bwengalis don't actually speak the 'officially recognised Bangla' eg. I speak Sylheti at home and English is my mothertongue. Ekushey is a narrowminded celebration not embracing diversity of regional languages.
I am an Indian,a Bengali, the Bhasha andolon did not affect me...still I celebrate EKUSHE...celebrating Ekushe is not parochial...I speak English,I communicate in English, professionally I use English, but I am proud of my mother language...everybody should be,even if he is not speaking the standard colloquial but a dilect thereof....I feel charity begins at home,if you can love your mother tongue/mother nation, you can love other languages which are foreign to you
Very interesting senguptanilanjan. I am a proud Indian Bengali too. We live in Bangalore. My wife is Telugu, my sister has married a Tamilian and can't write Bengali. But we speak Bengali with abandon. And now the extended family is learning to speak Bengali with passion..and we are learning theirs..
what the fuck...9 millions???when d fuck was that...anyways d biharis back den deserved to be wiped out...cause of what dey did...dey raped and killed bengalis alongside d pakis..but i have nothing against d new generation of biharis in bangladesh..dey deserve a better a chance and life as dey are born there
9 million!!!!! Where the hell did you read that? Do not even think about making lies just to make your side a victim, I would like to see where you got your facts from.
WARNING: Some Pakistani's are posting hate comments posing themselves as Bangladesi, Chinese, Irani, Pastun, Baluchi, Indian and many other national. So friends don't just lash out at each other when you get a bad response, that might be a jealous Paki who is ashamed of his own country and trying hard to outsource misery. Just ignore them pls.
Remember there is a difference between Bengalis and Bangladeshis. We are proud to be Bangladeshis whose cultural orientation is predominantly Bengali. Bangladeshis are free people who chose Bengali to be their language, Bengal to be their cultural root, Islam as their majority religion with peaceful coexistence of other religion (as we are secular state), and the tradition evolves from all these sources.
Therefore, we fought again for our freedom and this time we ignored the fact that we are fighting against Muslims. Once again it is freedom that human being cherish and it is freedom for which human being are ready to sacrifice anything. In 1971 we realised that being in a Muslim state not necessarily give us the necessary freedom to enjoy our culture, language, tradition. Therefore, we fought again and we identified us as Bangladeshis.
We chose to be with Pakistan only because the issue then was religion i.e. being Hindu or Muslim. We paid the price of culture to join a state similar in religion i.e. Islam just to enjoy freedom. Unfortunately our Muslim brothers in West Pakistan failed to provide that very freedom to us.
During the British rule of more than 200 hundred years, primarily religion was used to divide us and to rule us (the famous divide and rule strategy of British Empire). Unfortunately we gave up our freedom and fought with our neighbours and countrymen just because they are of different religion. This motivated Muslims and Hindus in 1947 to bargain for their own religion based states.
We chose to be a nation known as Bangladesh and we are proud to be Bangladeshis. Yes our majority religion is still Islam but we have Hindus, Buddhist, Christians, and tribal faithful living as Bangladeshis in this country too. And we are proud of all of them. We share a lot of culture with West Bengal in India but we are different and we celebrate this difference.
With regards to the debate going on above, I cannot help but to highlight the fact that we fought for freedom. Neither culture nor religion can justify not having freedom. Therefore, blaming us to leave religion or failing to be united with rest of Bengal is irrelevant.
First of all thanks to Labonno (nice name to choose as well) for the nice video. It has been nearly 7 years since I sang that song on 21st February. Being a Bangladeshi living abroad sometimes severe your ties to your roots. I am glad that your video watered my roots to be stronger.
