Heretics were burned until very late and even afterwars declaring yourself an infidel would stop your career in it's tracks (it's still that way in politics). A study in the National Academy of Sciences and in Royal Society (it's equivalent in the UK) revealed that only 3,3 percent of the scientists believed in a god of any kind.
