I actually sort of like the smell of a roadkill skunk. True, fresh skunk spray, however, is an absolutely unbearable odor. Really hard to describe... ever gotten a whiff of really concentrated ammonia? Imagine that times 1000, mixed with buring tires and an overwhelming sulfur stench. Most people vomit if they get sprayed in the face
I wouldn't mind having a skunk for a pet, they seem like very sweet misunderstood animals. Luckily the state I live in, and the one I want to live in aloow them as pets :3 And taking care of a skunk is a lot like a kitten, but they're just more fragile and gentle.
Well, I saw skunks in real life this year (January). I live in The Netherlands, so there are no wild skunks :( ...
Well, I saw the skunks in Zoo Oliemeulen, which was in Holland. They look very cute... I want one as pet... Anyway, the skunks were afraid of the camera and my friend,... But not from me. I even could so close as possible to the skunks, but I was very careful to not make them scared. I know how that feels... 1 skunk scared of me, but he lowered the tail when I said I'll do nothing.
Apparently there were wild skunks in Europe tens of thousands of years ago, but they were wiped out over here from the Ice Ages... time to re-introduce them I say! (after sufficient quarantine for rabies)
Sittin' round a campfire last summer, The person sitting next to me says "Don't move!". I hear some rustling then look down to see a skunk sniffing my feet. At that time, a log fell in the fire and his tail shot straight up. It didn't faze me. I just sat there staring at it til it got over the noise and ambled off in search of food.
I wanted a skunk when I was a kid and I nagged my parents relentlessly till I got oneA lovely adult female domesticated skunk (descented) named Honey whose owners had lost interest in.
She was an extremely gentle and friendly animal who loved resting in a lap and being petted.
Id have another but I live in a skunk unfriendly state now. (NC)
I truly do love skunks and its a shame that they and rats (which also make awesome pets) are so misunderstood.
@Linuxrat Move to uk... skunks are legal in uk, and there are no rabies... so, if your skunk bites someone, it won't be taken away... but you have to live with it without descenting it... as it's illegal to do so...
@Linuxrat I would live with a skunk without it being descented... I rather have the skunk not descented... as if I get a descented skunk now... my dog would eat it.. a skunk without being descented would teach her not to mess with strange, stripey cats... lolz!
Actually they have two anal glands, one on each side of the anus (same as your dog or cat). By pressing their legs together, the spray is ejected. Domesticated skunks have these removed by a vet when the skunk is young.
I feed skunks sometimes (not in regular schedules which would create dependencies), honestly so long as you act like a friend then you don't really have any problems from my experience.
Personally, only a few close calls and a few near misses. Most recently (a year and a half ago), was walking to the bus, and noted that a person on the other side of the street suddenly took off running. He'd almost stepped on a skunk and was making tracks BIG TIME before the skunk had time to spray.
The only time I ever went camping, I saw a mama skunk and her three tiny babies waddling across the street as we drove into the National Park. So cute!

Skunks are so cute! They're actually very friendly if you don't scare them.

Domesticated skunks make very nice pets and can be litterbox trained and come in a great variety of colors.
Linuxrat 3 years ago
I've seen them at the pet store. They're really sweet. I was holding one of the babies and it fell asleep in my arms. : )

do skunks have a special hole where they spray? because if it comes out of their butts that is really gross!
