I am bad at names and date like you said, but no one that I know of can go to someone's house and remember where all the rooms are even when they are big I mean they can remember houses bit not big ones... J can be shown around a house once no matter how big and remember where the loo is!!!
My problem is that I'm too good with names and faces. I know every single name of every single person in my classes at school. Only like four of them know me. So if I go up to one and am like "Hey, Madison." That person it usually like "Do I know you? . . ." And I feel like a stalker >.>
I can't remember names at all. I and SOOOO bad with names. I will always remember that I have met this person before and remember exactly what we did when we met, but not their names. I was around this one person once a week for about 2 months before I was finally able to remember his name.... So That's fun.
I have it the other way...I'm too good at remembering people's names and faces. As a result, I could tell you your auntie's nephew's friend's cousin's wife's name if you mention them only once before. The problem with that is that everyone assumes you're a stalker.
I have pretty good memory on the most part but I always forget what I've eaten/if I've eaten at all. I could not be able to tell you what I had for dinner last night because I've already forgotten. Point a gun at my head... still nothing. It might have been pasta... or was that the night before...
@TheLillification Oh, yeah that's why she has over 40,000 subscribers on this channel alone and people like me here ready to defend her. I'm not going to write a long message because it's just not worth it, but in the future, just keep those things to yourself. Regards, KayleyHydeArmy.
@TheLillification That is not constructive criticism in any way, shape or form. What do either you or Kayley gain from your comment, other than you getting an ego boost because you insulted someone you obviously don't know via an anonymous medium like Youtube comments?
I've got this problem too, and I'll raise you one. If I've met a person or known them for years, and they decide to change their hairstyle or hair color - I suddenly don't know who they are anymore. When I was a child, I used to be traumatized when my mother would return from the hair salon because I didn't know who she was, or why this strange woman was walking through my house. She's lucky I didn't subdue her with a tire iron and call 911.
@goliathprime I do the same exact thing, and so does my dad. My mum always laughs at us when we talk about not recognizing someone because their hair is different.
Not only can I not remember names... or faces... I have trouble with 5+ 7... because I was absent from school the day we learned it.. . some 20 years ago.... not 4+7 or 6+7... just 5+7.... less trouble with 5+8 but its still there too.
I'm not terrible at remembering names necessarily, I just call people by the wrong ones, including best friends and boyfriends and siblings and parents and oh, right, myself. *Sigh*
I have the problem you want. I'm great with faces. If I met somebody once, I'll remember their face, possibly how I met them, but for the love of all that is good, I do not remember names unless we had a particularly interesting introduction. I'm particularly guilty of this with my extended family. I try to go as far with the conversation without using a name or whispering to my mom, "Who is that?"
Also, I wish the YouTube app would let us click the annotations.
I find that i can keep a conversation with someone without remembering their names. It gets complicated when i can't even remember their faces too, but that happens only some of the time. Sometimes i mix their names with other people. On a side note it took me years to remember some of my teachers names. Small school so i had same teachers for a few years.
I don't remember names or faces, although I remember faces a bit more than names. I have to hear a person talk to know where I've met them before. It's annoying because recently I've been going to a series of country-wide actvities and people come to me like "OMG there you are!" and I recognize them about two minutes in the conversation.
I mix names. Like for example, the place I work now has FOUR people with the same name. But they have nicknames so everyone can tell them apart. (We have a really relaxed atmosphere.) But I can't tell which one is which... Also in high school there were these two guys who were best friends and were rarely spoken in a sentence that didn't include the other. I spent two to three months of the first year confusing them.
I have two odd ones: 1) I have no sense of direction, like, at all. I have lived in the same (small) town for 15 years and still get lost. I also can never remember the names of roads. 2) I can't count things when they're far away (This one is odd) like, if there's a group of people stood several meters away I could not tell you how many there are
@SweetAsAStrawberry I have a weird thing with counting, too! but mine's some kind of 4/5 confusion thing. like usually when there's 4 of something, i count 5. and the other way around. this can be kind of embarassing... ;D
I forget words. I start a sentance and stop in the middle cause i forget how to say that word. somtimes I remember how to say it in english but not in my everyday language. It's annoying!
I'm horrible at names, I have been at my school for four years and I still don't know everyone in my grade. But somehow I am really good at birthdays, I know all the birthdays of the 17 people in my group and all my extended family and various youtubers XD
I have directional amnesia (term I coined for myself) in the fact that I can know that I just made a right turn to go down this street, but when I'm coming back I can't remember which way I came from at ALL. And when I'm driving (quite often even down a road I travel everyday) I get like these 20 second bursts of amnesia of the road I'm on, like I don't remember any of the scenery or anything.
I'm not very good at names or faces, especially when I'm meeting people in groups. It leads to a lot of assuming that I've met someone and having a nice conversation with them before leaning over to my friend and asking what the person's name was.
I have a similar thing where if someone asks me to describe someone I just meet, I can't do it. I forget everything about them and end up saying,"uh, you know, they had a face... And
A friend of my dormmate has that with me! He says it's because I'm white and he doesn't see differences in white faces. I know I shouldn't but I feel offended. I does remember my dormmate every time, but I've seen this friend for about 12 times now! I can't imagine it's that hard to rememeber me when you see me EVERY week!
I cant remember my friends parents faces unless i've known them for about three years. My best friends father probably thought I was really rude the first years I knew her because I never said hi if I met him somewhere. I was in her house every other week at least and I still couldn't remember his face.
(cont.) It's actually quite incredible that any of us are so good at facial recognition because it's such a complex process. I figure that if something minor goes wrong at any stage of that (and once you factor in memory it gets even worse) then the whole process can be messed up, so I don't feel to bad about it, hehe.
My slight prosopagnosia (my psych class had to take a self-test and I got the minimum passing score!) mainly results in staring at people for an uncomfortably long time before knowing whether they're who I think they are. It doesn't help that I have terrible eyesight. I actually mainly identify people by their hair...so the more unique your hair and/or height, the more likely I'll recognize you. Yet I can easily identify people by their coats and have a practically photographic memory for bikes.
Could you have Prosopagnosia???? I slightly have it... I can't remember faces and names... it's horrible... the worst was when I started a class and some girl came up to me: "Sarrah! You're in this class too????"
Me: "Who are you? And how do you know my name????"
Turned out we ate lunch together every day the year before >_>
Yeah, my thing is names and just words in general, I can be quite HORRIBLE with those. For instance, my friends always talk about Doctor Who and Sherlock and for the longest time I did not remember any of the characters' names and I'm MUCH worse with the actors' names. For instance, my friends were talking about Lestrade and I had no clue who they were talking about, and I still get QUITE confused with urm... what are their names, Mycroft, Moriarty etc... Names seem so arbitrary!
im horrible with remembering birthdays. someone could tell me their birthday then within a week later i already forgot this happens so often that i have to put their birthdays in my calender on my phone.
Hey @owlssayhoot This thing you have is not just you, it's actually a thing! We were talking about it in my linguistics class yesterday. It's called prosoprognosia. It's a mental block that makes it harder for certain people to remember faces, and it extreme cases, this will apply even to people they have known their entire lives, such that people have to explain who they are until the person remembers. Fortunately you don't seem to have that extreme of a case. I thought that was interesting
@mdsq36 I agree! I live in Canada but watch a lot of British YouTubers, and while occasionally people use "housemate" to distinguish from "roommate", flatmate just sounds so much cooler.
Plus, I went through a particularly British stage where I frequently forgot the Canadian/North American version of words entirely.. one of which was flat/flatmate vs apartment/roommate.
i think the US should adopt the word "flatmate." I hate using the word "roommate" to describe someone you share an apartment with because it's never clear whether or not you actually share a room with them. 'Tis a gap in the American lexicon that ought to be filled!
I'm excellent with names. And alright with faces. But I cannot remember the face of someone from a picture - which eh, isn't too bad. But in the process of trying to sell your university books to strangers online I find myself texting "Where are you?" to people handing me their money right in front of me..
I have the exact same thing, which is terrible when I worked in a shop because someone would ask me to go get something, then I'd go and find it and when I returned I could never remember which person I'd literally just spoken to. I'd just be like 'Um, is it that woman? She's looking at me expectantly, it's probably her.' Damn you failure to remember what people's faces look like :(
@UnicornsVoldemort OMG THIS. In particular, I can't watch war movies without a friend because in those movies everyone dresses the same and has similar haircuts.
This is the first time I saw one of your videos (really enjoyed it, by the way) and all I could think was "Your country's stupid and so are you. Hahahahahaha!"
I sometimes forget people completely, not just the name or face but ever actually meeting them.
This gets really awkward when they walk up and say hi and start talking, I don't wanna ask them who they are....
I also forget who I tell things to, I like to talk about certain things a lot or tell certain stories a lot. Sometimes I'll start saying something to someone, whom I think has never heard it before, and it turns out they've heard it from me before...... Multiple times.
I donthave trouble remember peopls faces or name really. But something I do a lot is atatch the wrong names to the wrong faces. Like if you're introduced to a group of people and it isnt clear which one is which then my brain will automatically assume that brown hair guy in the corner is Fred Bloggs and blonde haired guy talking to him is Jeff....this has caused me many problems. And I've not yet been able to sort it. So now I avoid calling people by their names :L problem solved. Kinda.
...but I could not remember their names! It's even worse because in Japan it's rude to use "you" so basically you're referring to them by their last name (or first if you're close) in the entire conversation, so instead of "How are you doing?" you say "How is Tanaka-san doing?" xD So most of the time I avoid asking them questions and instead talk about the weather or what they're wearing, lol. Long comment is long but yeah xD Love your videos :)
I'm really bad with names (we're quite the opposite acutally!) and I was especially handicapped by this when I studied abroad in Japan a couple years ago because I met soooooo many people in a short amount of time and I could not for the life of me remember their names (last or first). Of course in a small town of 10,000 or so (and being the only foreigner there) they remembered my name. So whenever they'd see me around town they'd talk to me and stuff and I try to talk with them as well (cont)
I'm really bad at places. Specifically roads. Like I'll be getting a lift from my dad and be like 'Oh, I recognise this place, we're here' and he'll be like 'no that's on the other side of town.' This is fine and amusing when you're a passenger, but it's awful when I'm driving! It takes me sooo long to get confident that I know where I'm going before I can drive somewhere.
@ScarletDavies This is the exact reaction my friends had. I had to feed them cake to make them forgive me. I was nearly ostracised from Nerdciety for my memory. It also took me a long time to understand Love Actually. Goodness, that movie has a lot of Caucausian women who look similar. I couldn't even tell who was cheating on whom anymore.
But I can imagine one of your new friends who had a haircut beeing like;
- Hey do you see something diffrent about me!?
And you just like errr.....
;).
I do also have those -not beeing able to remember things- but with names.
It's really bad though 'cause I'm 15 now and I STILL can''t remember the names of my schoolmates and sometimes I even forget the name of one of my nearest friends!!
For the life of me I've never been able to attach stories to people, I remember EVERYONE, like if I see someone who I met when I was in kindergarten, I'd know his/her name, but I'd never be able to remember anything I've heard about them...or anyone...at least not until I hear a part of the story again...do you understand what I mean?
I am horrible with vocabulary. Whether it's Latin, or English, or Russian (German kid that I am), if you ask me what a certain word means, I won't be able to give you an answer. Confront me with a sentence and I'll be fine. Weird.
I remember that I have seen a person before, but I can neither recall where and when I met them, nor what their names are. Which gets really annoying.
I have a mental block to specific history dates. I can remember the birthdays of practically everyone I know but I can not for the life of me remember the specific dates of certain things. Seeing as I am taking GCSE History this is probably a bit of a fail.
Oh my god, I do the same thing. I'm amazing with names but I can't do faces. I had to meet with my writing colleague in my school's cafe the other day and I ended up waiting around and missing my meeting because I couldn't remember what she looked like (although I remembered her full name) and I didn't want to walk up to the wrong person.
I'm also bad at remembering if I've met people before, but I don't know their faces either... I meet a LOT of people and apparently I'm really memorable (I usually have dyed hair) but I don't remember who I meet. Also, I never, NEVER notice eye color and everyone thinks this is so weird. It's not that I don't make eye contact, I just don't pay attention to the color! I don't see why it's so important...
I'm so good at remembering faces it's scary. Like I'd remember someone I've seen once before in the tramway. BUT, I'm terrible at names. There's people I've been in college with for over a year now, and I'm always like "What's their name already ?"
words.... just common words i tend to forget when i'm just about to use them in a sentence. I'll say "You remember Sam. He was ....OMG, why can't I remember the word." That is really annoying.
i cannot remember simple french grammar rules.I've been in french immersion all my life and i just can't grasp it. it's amazing that i haven't failed the class yet.
I have a serious problem where I will NEVER remember what homework is set for my classes, even if I write it down. I'll see it and be like "what does that mean?!"
I'm extremely bad at remembering conversations even if it was 10 minutes before. I will repeat and repeat the same thing over and over again cause the convo never stick with me.
I automatically forget people's names when they introduce themselves. It's like it goes right over my head. Seriously, a lot of the time i'll realise 10 seconds afterwards that i did not catch their name.
Im also really bad at remembering what people wore. Supposedly us girls are meant to be able to do this? Like they will say 'remember, i was wearing that yellow cardigan with frills down the side' and i'll have no idea, even if it was yesterday. I don't remember what i wore the day before!
I tend to be the person that people forget, but one person in particular repeatedly does not only not remember that we have met, but also, when I mentioned it, every time, he would say, "what? No, I don't think so." And then he had the audacity to ask me out. I don't know. I have some understanding for forgetting faces, because it can happen to anyone. But when you repeatedly not only forget we have met but also don't believe me when I recount past conversations... that's an issue. lol
omg i have the same problem...though mine's most likely because i have difficulty making eye contact, so i literally just don't look at people's faces. I can tell you what color that persons shirt was, or what kind of shoes they had on, but hair color? facial hair? glasses? psh. i'm always at a loss.
That cappuccino sign is in my parents' living room. Exactly that one. In the Netherlands. Found it at a random yard sale type thing. This is odd. (on a related note: awesome video!)
I so know how you feel. I do that as well. I can never remember what people look like.
Not good in my job though, luckily our receptionist is really good with people and always tells me who they are rather than just telling me someone is here to see me.
if i dont see someone for a week i forget what they look like. like even my mum, ive known her for my entire life but if i dont see her for a week ill forget what she looks like...
I always forget people's name, and i also don't remember what I have said to certain people, so I frequently ask people if they have heard of me saying this story before.. Sometimes I say the same thing twice to the same person. And I always forget the detail in a conversation too
Can I just say that I love your new ending - the music and the world map :D (I know you've had it for a while but I just thought I'd say that its pretty cool :D)
I have a really bad problem of forgetting people's names. When I tell stories, I often can't remember kids names who have been in my classes for 4 years! So I completely understand what you mean when you say "mental block" because that's exactly what it is! It's so frustrating!
Yeah, same. If I meet someone briefly I rarely will remember what they look like. This is particularly annoying when I'm at work because I'll take a print order for a customer and when they come back an hour later I won't realise it's them. I'll remember every detail of our conversation but I just can't put a face to any of it.
I wish people wouldn't be so offended by it. My mind just focuses more on the content of the interaction rather than the appearance of the person I'm interacting with.
Well, this is going to sound stupid, but i can't for the life of me remember off the top of my head which way is left and which is right. It's almost as annoying as it is embarrassing.
I'm horrible at remembering who was with me in certain events. I'll tell one friend "So I went to see a movie with my friend about birds...." and she'll interrupt to say it was her.
Well that defeats the point of telling the story. I need a better memory.
i have a similar thing as you yet its more b/c im partially blind and do not rely on facial details to remember someone. I just kind of go with it but it sucks when people assume you know their face even if you dont know their name x.x
Same here. I'm great at names but terrible with faces. But it's mainly because I'm really shy, when I introduce myself, I usually avoid eye contact and look at their ear and back down to the floor. /:
Actually, there is a mental disorder known as prosopagnosia (AKA face blindness) which is when someone is unable to identify others soley on their facial structure and instead use other indicators like hair, body type, and voice to recognise people. Not saying you have it since being incapable and being impaired in something are two very different areas, but still, I thought it was interesting...
In a way you could see it as a good thing that you forget peoples faces. You forget how people look but you do not forget their name or personality. In a way that could say a lot about you as a person. For example it could mean that you don't judge people by their looks but by their personality, that's why you forget how the look.
Me personally I'm not good with road/street names & sometime I forget who I tell things too. When I realise this it makes me feel old. But yeah...Great video.
i'm actually really good at remembering names and faces but, i forget something instantly if it has to do with numbers. like, dates, time, math, OH GOD, im especially terrible at math. i mean i'll just be sitting there in class and the teacher is explaining something and five seconds later POOF! it's gone... *sigh*
I also have a tendency of not remembering people names until midway through conversations, so I'll just avoid saying their name at first. "Hey, Zac!" "Hey..!" I think everyone i know thinks im an asshole.
I used to have the same problem, but i started associating faces with other faces. like i meet someone, and i immediately try to associate their faces to other people i know, or celebrities or whatever. works for me, but when i try to describe someone to people, they give me weird looks.
I tend to forget names and faces, but I make up for it by obnoxiously nicknaming everyone when I see them. I guess I'm a bit like Sawyer from Lost in that respect...I don't for the life of me know what my friends' names are, but I know EXACTLY who I'm talking about when I refer to them by any of my extremely strange, situation-based nicknames. For instance, a friend of mine gave me a dollar one day when I forgot my lunch money. Her name is now Jesus.
My problem is not so much forgetting things, it's more that I remember so much that I seem like a stalker. I often pretend to forget things so I don't come off so creeper-ish.
I actually have the compleat opposite, i'm super good with names and faces, but to the point that it's weird. Allot of the time i only need to be presented once, but then nobody remembers me. Sometimes people will point out someone and say like it's dave or something. And then when i meet dave and i already know his name, i look like a creeper.
I forget literally everything... I'm serious... if I didn't see my parents every single day .. I would forget their names in a month...I talked with my mom about it...and I asked if it could be serious... and she always answers with the same thing..but I can't remember what it is...
The artist Chuck Close has a complete inability to recognize faces, that's why he makes portraits - to cement them in his mind.
Sometimes if my mom tells me something like "Bring your laundry downstairs" but I'm in the middle of something, by the time I finish what I was doing, I forget she told me at all. But when she reminds me, I do remember. So at least I don't completely forget - that would suck.
I have a tendency to not remember who I tell what stories to, so I tend to tell the same boring stories a thousand times to the same person, and people are too nice to say I'm being obnoxious.
I remember there was this documentary on TLC about a lady who couldn't remember faces at all. Like, she couldn't even remember her family members' faces and the only way she could really recognize people was by voice. At least you don't have it that bad!
I have a mental block when it comes to directions. I can drive somewhere, and then not know how to get home. Also, I've lived in the same city my entire life and I can probably only navigate within a 20 kilometre radius from my home.
I have that same problem, but for me it seems to be exclusive to actors in movies. When I've met people in real life I can remember what they look like no problem. However, if I'm watching a movie I sometimes end up confused as to what's going on because I can't remember which character is which from scene to scene.
I can't see the similarities between family members. Like when someone says a newborn has his mother's eyes.. I can't tell. But even when its like siblings.. I can't see "the same eyes" or how they look the same.
I have a block for medical things... Which is can also be extremely embarassing because if one of my friends or my grandmother needs surgery or has been in the hospital for whatever reason, I never know what exactly was going on. It's so frustrating that I forget because those facts can be so important to their lives! :(
I have a block were I will know the name and the face but I don't always remember which face goes with what name. So at a family event I will have all the names from that part of my family in my head, but I call people by the wrong names...
when i worked at a retail store, people would ask me to check the back room for some item, but when i'd come back i would have COMPLETELY forgotten what they looked like. so i'd wander around and try to find somebody who appeared to be waiting for me it was really awkward
I think of words in a different way than most people. Instead of concentrating on consonants, I look at the vowels. So I get "Jessica" and "Stephanie" mixed up, or "Amanda" and "Samantha". Also, when I'm trying to remember a word I'll say,"uuuuuuhhhhh I know it's an e word! What is it?..... oh yeah, sematic!" and then people look at me like I'm insane.
I have a mental block when it comes to dates. I can remember every single insignificant detail about events, especially in history, but I cannot remember dates. Ugh, no matter how hard I try. I mean, not even important ones, such as the year the USA declared independence or Columbus sailed to the Americas (and there is a song for that!)
I have a similar situation. I can remember vague features about people like, they have red hair, straight teeth, a characteristic freckle etc. But I can never visualise their actual face. And then I'll see them and think 'Oh yes! How could I forget!' and then never remember...
I can never seem to remember addresses! Like I can remember what the house or whatever looks like, exactly the color of the bricks and the side of the street it's on and where in the neighborhood it's located but never the actual numbers and street names. So frustrating!
Yeah....I just introduced myself to someone for the fourth time yesterday....we go to school together and there's only about 300 students. We both live on campus so I saw him all the time, but I forgot that I had introduced myself to him several times.
I'm the same way, to an extent. I can't visualize faces--even family or close friends sometimes--and often don't recognize people. But you have it pretty good; I can't do names either. I'm really, really terrible with names. And connecting them to faces. Terrible.
I have the same problem, and I was talking to one of my friends about today. There actually have been times where I've forgotten what my parents look like.
My dad is awful with names. And I mean horrendously awful. But he's brilliant with faces. He could meet a person once, and then a year later would recognise them if reintroduced. But whenever he meets one of my friends, he never, ever remembers their names. I've known this girl for 10 years now, and he still forgets her name. He's a strange man, my dad.
I am very good at names and faces, but I can never, ever, remember who color a person's eyes are. I have a friend I've known and hung out with a lot for years, and I'm still like "Are their eyes black, or brown, or hazel?"

I just suck at names. Very much. And I very easily confuse one person with another. It's not good.

Plus, I went through a particularly British stage where I frequently forgot the Canadian/North American version of words entirely.. one of which was flat/flatmate vs apartment/roommate.
keila347 1 month ago
i think the US should adopt the word "flatmate." I hate using the word "roommate" to describe someone you share an apartment with because it's never clear whether or not you actually share a room with them. 'Tis a gap in the American lexicon that ought to be filled!

I'm excellent with names. And alright with faces. But I cannot remember the face of someone from a picture - which eh, isn't too bad.

Like I'll be getting a lift from my dad and be like 'Oh, I recognise this place, we're here' and he'll be like 'no that's on the other side of town.' Yeah, same. If I meet someone briefly I rarely will remember what they look like.

I can't see the similarities between family members. Like when someone says a newborn has his mother's eyes.. I can't tell. But even when its like siblings.. I can't see "the same eyes" or how they look the same.

Jane Goodall has a similar problem, I'm not sure exactly what it is, but it's similar.

I have a block for medical things... Which is can also be extremely embarassing because if one of my friends or my grandmother needs surgery or has been in the hospital for whatever reason, I never know what exactly was going on. It's so frustrating that I forget because those facts can be so important to their lives! :(

i have the same issue due to being on the autism spectrum. it's called face blindness, try not to feel too bad.

I have a block were I will know the name and the face but I don't always remember which face goes with what name. So at a family event I will have all the names from that part of my family in my head, but I call people by the wrong names...

You must be an extraordinarily left-brained person. People who are dominantly left-brained are very logical and are better with words than images.
I'm very right-brain so faces are very easy for me. Remembering names or stories people have told me that are things I always forget.

when i worked at a retail store, people would ask me to check the back room for some item, but when i'd come back i would have COMPLETELY forgotten what they looked like. so i'd wander around and try to find somebody who appeared to be waiting for me it was really awkward

I have a mental block with hair cuts. As soon as someone gets a hair cut my memories are edited to give them that hair cut.

So basically one of my fave youtubers now has a beauty channel with only my favorite type of beauty videos.
Sign me up! I'm wicked pumped. I don't like the makeupy beauty videos but all the rest? Count me in.

Yeah....I just introduced myself to someone for the fourth time yesterday....we go to school together and there's only about 300 students. We both live on campus so I saw him all the time, but I forgot that I had introduced myself to him several times.

I'm the complete opposite, remember faces and draw a blank on any name unless I get told at least 10 times :)
