Klimova and Ponomarenko are the last great ice-dancing pair. Since then, ice-dancing has been littered with bizarre moves that are devoid of grace and musicality. K & P are the best ice-dancers I have ever seen. Nobody can touch Klimova's grace and ability to interpret music into dance.
Cieszę się że mogłem ponownie zobaczyć legendarną parę. Pamiętam jak dziś ten taniec z Mistrzostw Olimpijskich. A byłem wtedy nastolatkiem. Przepiękny taniec i muzyka.
I never did like KP. I preferred other russian pairs,
but now looking at that -
oh, my God, how degradated figure skating
due to new rules.
Great pairs have to break their plastic, their artistic potential - everything. Klimova/Ponomarenko are among that who are magic great. Not sport enough, more art and magic.
oops I forgot to say THANK YOU A million times for posting this and also about the Duchesnay's they were great but the only ones that came close to K&P were USOVA & ZHULIN and should have won SILVER !
As I recall the FRENCH judge was later in a lot of trouble cause she couldn't justify her demeaning score !
I'm British, obviously a HUGE T&D fan, but I've always LOVED K&P. Their clean edges, line, beauty, positions, emotions, evenly matched quality. And they're the ONLY ice dance team to win Bronze (Sarajevo '84), Silver (Calgary '88), Gold (here '92) in consecutive Olympics. WOW!
I agree about the CoP system. But I think Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir are incredible "dancers" not in the flashy "MTV-style" but v classical.
Excellent. I remember when I saw this live. It was a very spellbinding performance and you could easily see why they won gold.
One thing I have to say is that watching the figure skating at the 1992 Olympics got me interested in classical music for the first time. In fact thanks to this performance, I consider Bach's Air one of the most erotic pieces ever written.
The only word that does this program justice is mesmerizing, simply mesmerizing; they did not get the response from the French audience that they deserved because most of them were rooting for the Duschenays, who were clever but heartless. In fact Usova and Zhulin were also better than the French team.
Just beautiful, beats the daylights out of all the MTV-style "ice dancing" out there now. We just don't see the elegance, maturity, and classicism of ice dancers like this anymore, or like Gordeeva and Grinkov in pairs.
I know little about the technicalities of ice dancing, but I found this dead sexy. There may be other skaters more technical, but you've got to give it to these two on style. Bravo.
These two were phenomenal technicians. I remember Betty Calloway (the coach of Torvill & Dean) once said while commentating that Marina & Sergei were "technically perfect skaters." The problem that some had with them back when they did more traditional ballroom-style dances was that their skating was almost too good. In other words, the style was rather clinical. I don't agree but you get my drift about their skating technique.
This team combines incredible difficult and flawless technical dancing with stunning artistry because of tons of passion, great style, and outstanding interpretation. They are amazing.
Today's ice dancing routines can't hold a candle to this. And I don't mean the ice dancers themselves, who are very talented; it is just that all the originality has been sucked out of the programs by the new rules of the Code of Points. You never see anything as mesmerizing as this program anymore. I thought the top three teams in 92 all had brilliantly choreographed routines. But the best team did win.
I loved the Duchesnays but they should have been fourth. Isabelle was sick and their skate was so so, G&P were amazing and are probably the greatest technical ice dancing pair of all time.
I didn't say G&P were the best all around ice dancers of all time, I said they were the best technical skaters and that is fact not opinion. Nobody could match the speed and edge control of Pasha Gritchuk, not even T&D in their prime. T&D were artistic pioneers and took the sport to a new artistic level but don't over blow their actual technical skills.
That's fine but you just proved to me that you don't understand the concept of basic skating skills. There is a divide between artistic and technical, while T&D where artistic pioneers and were very good in terms of technique they were not as good as Pasha. Pasha is considered one of the most talented technical skaters in history, her skills were astonishing.
Marks way too low. This was one of the greatest performances in the history of dance by far. For me it even rivals Torvil and Dean's Bolero. Their technical marks should have been littered with 5.9s and their artistic with 6.0s. Who cares if the Duchensays left. They were out of the running for gold after the other dances anyway, and their boring West Side story which the judges must have seen many times in practice could never come close to this no matter how well they skated it.
This performance was perhaps the greatest four minutes in sports. She absolutely conveyed the emotion of the music. Bach has NEVER looked so good. I cry every time I see it. Thank you both!!!!Actually this performance rips my heart out.....
This is my co-favorite routine and couple from the 1992 Olympics. I just can't decide if K & P's Bach routine was the best-or U & Z's 'Four Seasons'. These two FD's from '92 were gilded with gold. :)
U/Z's Four Seasons was beautiful but it was considerably less difficult than this performance and G/P's. I thought U/Z's bronze medal was fine but I would've switch the placement of the Duchesnays with Grishuk/Platov.
That is true-between the top Russian pairs K & P had the toughest stuff out there athletically-they're gold was richly deserved. I liked the Duchesnays but their 'West Side Story' routine should not have placed them on the podium over the Russians.
Absolutely! I'm basically just a casual fan, and I saw this at a very impressionable time of my life and never, EVER forgot it. I waited for 2 years for the '94 Olympics only to be disappointed: Nothing ever approached the sublime joy of 1992. Bravo for posting it!
I remember seeing this LIVE and I was already a huge fan of K&P from the 88 games but from the start to end I was mesmerized, I don't think I moved a muscle the whole time.
This performance is the personification of Strength meeting Beauty. Their technique is flawless and artistry is passionately moving.
This is the best DANCE team of all & I think the only ones to have won all medals in 3 games & this is the BEST FREE SKATE in ICE DANCE
