Also how much is a PS2 these days? You can get 2nd hand ones for about $50 It's hardly devestating if an old PS2 stops working and after trying everything else you give it a tap with a hammer. Don't tell me you've never given an old electrical device a strong tap to get it working again. I've had old TV's, VCR's, DVD players, Amplifiers etc... that have worked after giving it a good tap or rattle.

I'll give you some better advice: clean off that little white plastic part that connects to the worm gear. I used a note card and fixed my PS2. It's easy enough to figure out how to do it with common sense. Usually, there's a dirt build-up that makes the eye not want to move up and down the worm gear.

@crashfiend Yes. There's a little warning on the top of the disk drive about not looking into the laser. It's easy enough to keep yourself safe, since the laser is pointing straight upward. Simply don't be directly above the PS2 when you open it up. =3 There's no reason to do that anyway.

@FeeLtheHertZ You have to work on it plugged in, or else you can't tell if you still get the error or not. When you shut it off the little white gear resets itself so you'll be doing no good that way.

There's nothing unsafe about working with it while it's plugged in as long as you don't look directly into the lazer.

That gear has nothing to do with anything on my girlfriends ps2 hers the gear goes back to where it wants to be regardless of what i do to it i think the playstation adjusts itself on this model.... but then again i cleaned the lens and mirror and now it works like a charm shawing.

He jumped the gun on the hammer fix. After cleaning and adjusting the laser height. if it will not read any discs..and you have tried everything. One last shot is to adjust the gain on the laser. On that particular model there are 2 very small screws on the back of the laser..1 for dvd other for cd..Turning it clockwise increases power of laser. Give it a small turn of screw driver and adjust it a bit and check after each adjustment to see if it reads discs.

I hope this is a joke vid, because if you knew anything about electronics, you would not have the system open while plugged in and running.

The issue is with the tracking arm... That's an SCPH-30001 model, and the plastic carrier arm wears out.

All you have to do is remove the laser unit, and gently warm the plastic arm with a heat gun and gently bend it down.
