Hi Wishbone. About how many rounds do you have thru your Ultra Carry - & about how many rounds would you say it would take to break the gun in. I heard it takes many more rounds to break in a smaller 45 than a larger one. Thanks. Sincerely, JAMES.
@buzzclark Hi James, I probably have about 1700 or so into it now. It took some tweaking and about 1000 rounds before I was happy with it reliability wise. I can't really comment on the large vs small "break in". That's the first I've heard of that and this is the only Kimber I own.
i recently purchased a kimber and its been 4 days and im noticing discoloration on the barrel.... its kind of turning brown... i called the gun store and they said this is normal because of the carbon in the steel, and that it is just cosmetic and wont affect the guns performance and is just a surface rust.... can anyone confirm and let me know how to get rid of it please!!! i JUST bought it... its been a busy week so i havent even shot it! help..... anyone.... thanks....
some people are A holes ,thanx all your video`s of the crimson ultra 2 strip and clean are very helpful , just got mine today and can`t wait to shoot it!!!
Thx... as I thought, it depends on the individual. I did both. regarding an earlier question pertaining to the "barrel" when my UCII is in the "slide lock" position.."How much movement should the barrel have when in this position"? Mine seems to wiggle around a bit versus having a feel of "solid positioning" leading me to believe I reassembled incorrectly? yet the slide, chambering seems to work as it should.
Can you tell I am new to cleaning my Crimson UCII... as indicated, I have watched all your videos. One question I have is, that it isn't clear when you "run your dry and wet cloth swatches thru the barrel", if you are running it back-n-forth, or only a single pass thru the barrel, from the chamber-side out to the muzzle? Thx
For the cloth swatches it doesn't matter too much. Most purists will only run them one direction and then remove them to make sure they're not dragging dirt back through the barrel. Chamber to muzzle is the correct direction.
Another disassembly question on "slide lock". Maybe the tolerance on my Crimson UCII is overly tight, but after 4 cleanings (1st 3-by gun shop), the slide lock pin is still a bear to remove and replace, despite the use of the "new" brass type tool you highlighted. Every video I watch it is made to appear a very easy exercise. Keep up your great video's. Would like to see a little more detail on where to use the "brush" when cleaning. Thx
The slide lock should come right out but has to be positioned just right. Make sure you've got the alignment of the notch over the pin (I think I describe that in the take down video?). If you don't it could definitely be more difficult!
Thx Wishbone. I am 99.9% sure the slide lock is lined up properly. Even the guy at the Gun Shop had issues with it. Yours and other video's (not as concise as yours) make it appear as tho that sucker pop's right out and for me it does not. Keep up the great work on these video's. I know they are saved as "favorites". Thx
Your videos are great. Just completed my 1st (awkward) attempt to clean my UCII (even using the new "tool" you highlight in one of your video's. Outside the mishaps, I managed to reassemble I think. Question is this, with the slide locked back, should there be any play in the barrel after reassembly? It seems to have some wiggle in it and I am thinking it shouldn't do so and be more rigid? Thx
With the slide locked back there will definitely be some movement in the barrel. Not a lot but I wouldn't worry about that too much about it. With the slide forward there should be little to none.
Thx again Wishbone!! Any new video's coming out?? One suggestion I have is around the Ammo people are using with their Kimber UCII's. This would be a big help for all Kimber user's and i am sure they would respect your perspective on the subject. I have fired Federal Hydra Shok & Speer Gold Dot 230gr at the range but that doesn't help when it comes to determining expansion, etc. Some recommend Glaser PowerBall +P 165gr ... for much better expansion? thx
I like both of your choices. The expert on expansion and wound track is definitely Massad Ayoob. I'd recommend picking up any of his books or searching out his articles. I'll definitely consider doing a video on it. One thing to keep in mind is what a court is going to make out of any choice you make firearm/ammo wise. Keeping it simple can sometimes make you appear more justified in court. Just something to think about. Thanks for the suggestion. I hope to be making more soon!
I am familiar w/Massad Ayoob's work. but not sure he addresses UCII ammo? You are 100% right, the "courts" interpretation on Firearms/ammo and what is "excessive force" (go figure) is a subject matter all on its own and one we cannot resolve in this forum. My query on ammo was mostly "aimed" (excuse pun) on "FTF" and overall "reliability" based on your experience? "expansion" & "penetration" of any round is very important for obvious reasons. Just an idea for other UCII users.
Great job on the disaasembly video Wishbone. After repeated tries I think I have the takedown under control. On thing I would add is that in fieldstripping the UCII it is important to note that the user does NOT engage the grip safety. Additonally anytime I fieldstrip I place some electrical tape on the bottom portion of slide and upper portion of frame so as not to scratch the firearm by the slide lock pin..
I purchased a Kimber Pro CDP II, my first handgun. Your videos have been extremely helpful learning how fieldstrip and clean the weapon. The manuals are not written for the first time gun owner and watching your videos in conjunction with reading the manual I now have a through understanding of my gun. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make and post your videos.
If you are shooting low and to the left it is not your sights. You are either tightening your fingers upon firing or you are slapping the trigger with your firing finger. That is assuming you are right handed. This is a very common problem among first time 3'' users.
Outstanding! Just came home with my new ultra carry LG 45. I was immediately amazed at how useless the owner's manual was regarding field stripping. Thanks to your video 5.1, I was finally able to field strip my weapon. Now, after watching 5.2, I know where all those lubrication points are. Much thanks!!
I have a suggestion for one more video regarding your Kimber 1911 and cleaning. You might want to show people how to disassemble and clean the extractor and firing pin/spring assembly. They should also be cleaned about every 300-400 rounds.
Nice information. How many rounds have you put thru it thus far? REason being I can see upclose some of the wear on certain exposed parts. I'm trying to decide on a small 1911 purchase so this is important. With such a small barrell/slide how many rounds before replacement of the guide rod springs? & how do you replace them/it? I.E. do you change out both the springs or the whole unit? Cost?? A complete detail strip cleaning of a 1911 is very easy compared with other semi-autos. Thx JAMES.
Manual states the the recoil spring should be replaced every 1800 rounds. This is the outer spring (verified this with Kimber pro shop). The inner spring must be replaced every 5000 rounds. The outer spring you can buy from Kimber and replace yourself, the inner spring must be done by them or you can by an entire new recoil assembly. Most people have two recoil assemblies so when they have to send theirs in they have one to use (again only every 5K rnds).
great video! I just purchased this same pistol today, and I was lost on how to field strip this thing after years of Glock use/ownership!!! The factory instruction manual is lacking for someone who has zero familiarity with the 1911 style pistol. Thanks for your informative videos!
hah maybe I should give them a call and offer to rewrite the manual. I'm with you, it took me longer than it should to figure it out. Thanks for watching.
im getting my first gun this week, are kimber handguns good and reliable??, cause my dad is like REALLY familiar with all gun makers except kinber so he's not sure if i should get one. Please reply!!! XD
Kimber has traditionally had very good reliability in the past. However, the newer models have had a few quarks that have notched them down a bit. After the break in period mine has been extremely reliable and I don't have a problem recommending Kimber as long as people understand they have to deal with the break in. Check the 1911 forums for reliability reports for additional information specifically on 1911 brands.
Great videos! Thank you for doing this. I am about to purchase an Ultra Carry (vs. Ultra Carry II). Are you aware of any design flaws or serious problems with the Ultra Carry model? All I've seen is good reviews so far...
thanks very helpful!
