  • Little known fact: When The Who performed this opera live, Pete humorouslly introduced it as a tale of an unfaithful wife who was seduced by a trian driver, who is latter forgiven by her husband. However, Townshend revealed in an inerview sometime during the early 2000's that the opera was about a female child who was abducted and molested by the old man, who is latter forgiven by her father. Pretty weird, but it only makes the whole story more epic.

  • It has been said that Psychedelic Music came in 1965-66. That is so true.

  • i love epic long songs like this, bohemian rhapsody and jesus of suburbia xD

  • I FU#^ing LOVE this!!

  • The part from 3:32 to 5:14 was written and sung by the greatest bass player who ever lived.

  • Couldn't afford actual cellos.

  • @aprilglaspieable no, they probably just smashed them all before they got to using them

  • Great track!!!!

  • Brilliant.

  • Geez, that nine minutes and ten seconds went by too fast!

  • My buddy Steve said I had to buy this album when it came out. I gotta say I hated it and just didn't get it at all. Time goes and you grow. By the 4th of July 1971, when I saw the Who at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago, I was totally a Who fan. It was the best show I ever saw, so perfect for 4 hours that I thought nothing could ever top it...I still do. At the end, a totally wrung out Pete Townshend responded to the crowd roaring for an encore: "You want more? See us in Milwaukee tomorrow!"

  • Can't we like the Green Day version AND this original?

  • @StJimmyRocks92 No Jimmy!

  • @britbaby777 no you don't

  • @abt7217tc Many people would agree with me...

  • @britbaby777 i can understand MAYBE why you might not like this particular version as much (i recomend this one only for hardcore fans like me :D). However, it cannot be denied that the rock and roll circus version is not only the best live performance of this song, but perhaps the best live performance The Who ever made. Give that one a try and i guarantee you'll forget Green Gay ever existed.

  • @britbaby777 btw, if you take my advice and listen to the r&rc version, watch the one posted by chadstone30 as opposed to the one posted by SolidAir89. SolidAir89's is slowed down a bit. Hope you take my advice. I think you'll really enjoy that version. Everyone does. Cheers!

  • entwistle's intro with that bass blows my fucking mind every time

  • green day sucks

  • best part is at end---you r forgiven

  • Now this is how a love song should be written.

  • i can relate to pete soooo much! my hero, great guy and a shit hot guitarist songwriter and overall musician!

  • Forget Tommy this was their first rock opera!

  • fucking wow..better be nice to an old engine driver.

  • never knew they were saying "cello". First heard this song in Rushmore. Really like it.

  • 6:40 AMAZING

  • saw the WHO perform this in 66/67 at Redcar Jazz Club - I seem to think it was called the mini opera, but could be wrong

  • @danvers0549 You lucky ducky. Yeah, it was considered a "mini-opera", or "Tommy's parents".

  • this album is sooooooo much better than having to listen to super mario bros. theme music

  • I first heard (and saw) this song on the movie "The Kids are Alright". Another great Who song. And if you have never seen the movie, do so.

  • fantastic song! One of the greats of the 60's! and the studio version is very powerfull!

  • 3 people need to f-f-f-f- fade away!

  • 6:43 LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL what a ultimate song

  • You uploaded this wrong.

  • @auerstadt06 Why.

  • @auerstadt06 no, this is just the original version

  • Dang! Dang! Dang!

  • My name is Ivor !!

  • I like this song when they played at the Monerey pop Festival in 1967>!

  • green day needs to do this song WITH the who :P

  • The Who couldn't afford it..... those were the good old days .

  • The Who couldn't afford it..... those were the good old days.

  • Pete sayin "you are forgiven" at the end, smexi

  • Masterpiece, enough said

  • My ex wife made off with all my vinyl. Happy Jack was part of that. Sniff.

  • Pete wanted a cello solo, ut the studio couldn't offored it. So, he has the band repeat the word cello in place of the solo. Wo knew it would have come out so cool?

  • a great case of when live is better than studio. This studio version isn't bad, but listen to the version the who plays "live at leeds." itll blow you away

  • @montereypopfestiva67 The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus version beats the Live at Leeds version IMO.

  • @notanotheraccount I just watched that. "Leeds" is more powerful and rhythmaclly flowing, but "Circus" is more innovative and sounds cooler, for lack of a better term. "Circus" lets you watch them perform, which adds to Moons craziness and Townshends showmanship. After comparing the two, I think it's like comparing apples to apples.

To anyone reading this, watch this version "Live at Leeds" or "Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus." You can't go wrong wither way.

  • I have to say that Ivor the the Engine Driver turns me on

  • This is one of my favorite songs ever. I could listen it forever.

  • quem são os dois filhos da p....que não gostam? ceello, cceeellloo, ceellloooo lol

  • Comment removed

  • "Cello, cello, cello, cello, cello, cello, cello......"

  • imagine how awesome it would be if the instruments actually made the sounds that they do on the album cover

  • This song was Petes first experiment with a rock opera. He was so satisfied with this he decided to write Tommy and ultimatley Quadrophenia. They are all fantastic and set the standard for years to come. Live version of this is much better tho (Leeds and Monterey)

  • As a fan of Green Day, I like their cover of this song, although i do like this one because it is more original.

  • YES CELLO Cello cello cello cello cello cello cello

hahahaha so awesome... i love theese ghuys

    WHO!

  • too bad it aint the WHO////////

    good cover though

  • @gcpotts1

This is The Who, unless you're talking about Green Day's cover but this is The Who just the album version of the song

  • @gcpotts1 this is the who

  • great song

  • So far ahead of its time! When music was exciting and not the bland faceless rubbish it is today!

  • rock & roll circus is still the best

  • Never has a song been so daring: A filthy/ hilarious story, an extremely long song for its time (1967), and incorporating many different, catchy musical styles. For more information see "Brown Shoes Don't Make it" by the Mothers Of Invention, released a few months before.

  • Let's be honest. The album version pales in comparison to various live versions. Live at leeds might be the best version of this period. Any takers?

  • @mindeloman Fillmore East!

  • @mee123104 I'll see if I can't find that.

  • Okay, I listened to it. This is all about opinions and I still like Live at leeds better as a complete song. However, Fillmore East was probably the best version of the "You are forgiven" chorus I've yet heard. 68 was a transitional year for the who. It was a year that the old sound of I can't explain was becoming the new sound of Tommy and Who's next. A quick one was introduced in 66. Live at Leeds was recorded in 1970. They had a lot of shows to perfect the performance. But to each their own

  • I definetely like the Green Day version more, but the creativity all came from The Who. I'm sure if The Who re-recorded this recently, it'd beat Green Day ten times over.

  • @michaelqwerty44

fuck you, the who will always abide

  • Rock n' Roll Circus version: /watch?v=1uMKPWvgjk0&playnext_from=TL&videos=XTir8gPmcaE

  • @michaelqwerty44 Please check out the version at the rock-'n-roll circus. It's MUCH better.

  • @Grafietstift /watch?v=MlDTC7r_HHM

  • @Grafietstift it's been took off you tube mate...........obviously the stones are still bitter that the who BLEW THEM AWAY on their own showcase! ! ! ! !

  • @Grafietstift The Rock and Roll Circus version of this song is good, but the Live At Leeds version is better!

  • @Colin0513 I love both :D

  • @Grafietstift Don't deny that, but another good version of it that I've found is The Who Live at the London Coliseum version from 1969,its on the Live at Kilburn 1977 bonus disk!

  • @Colin0513 Yes I have that too! That one is good too indeed!

  • @Grafietstift I also have the Montereey Pop version on the Who Maximum R & B Live DVD and The Who Live At The BBC version!

  • @Colin0513 Yup! Me too! Although I don't like the Monterey Pop version that much..

  • brilliant!

  • This is an amazing song. It suprises me that it's not on their greatest hits albums. I (personaly) like the Green Day cover version better but, i don't want to piss anyone off.

  • all the people who use this video to fight, and most if this video is about THE WHO!, fuck off, look another place like a selena gomez or the girl with the name of cigarettes(montana) video, not this place, its sacred place...... is a quick one while hes away people! the first pete's mini opera. i've to say that i prefer the others versions of this song, but i still love this one. :D

  • dont anyone just listen to the song anymore?

  • hello.

  • personally i WAY prefer the live versions

  • Cello, cello, cello, cello, cello, cello

Cello, cello, cello, cello, cello, cello

Cello, cello, cello, cello, cello, cello

Cello, cello, cello, cello, cello, cello

  • @aerosolcheesedotcom DANG! DANG! DANG! DANG!

  • Green Day's vesion is way better

  • try listening to The Who's version on Live at Leeds or The Kids Are Alright. they absolutely rock!

  • @diamondlion2 I totally agree. Like, I heard this original version and I was like, wtf..

  • @Shanequa19112 thank you cuz Green Day is way better at this song cuz they make it more like idk sounds better and in the first part of the who version there voice is so bad but the Green Day version they flow together

  • @diamondlion2

Shut the fuck up. You're comparing the original punks to desperate wannabe punks.

  • @DElasee no YOU shut the fuck up!!!! YOUUUUUUU SHUT-UP!! and YOU know nothing about music on top of that so YOU SHUT-UP!!!!!!

  • @PopCulture20

    lol, something's wrong with you.

  • @PopCulture20 im gonna start this off with 4 words, you are an asshole... suggesting that he doesnt know about music... I dare you to show me 1 of your little rappers or hiphop singers that has even 1% of the talent bands like the Who had... and you cant because it is 100% AUTOTUNER SHIT it doesnt even make the voices better.... im makes all of them sound like whiny little girls

  • @gamrguy4444 and you are......................?? are you the fellow bed bouncer of DElasee? what kinda music do you two listen to at night?

  • @PopCulture20 if that was an attempt at a gay joke you fail... im 13...

and i listen to rel music that makes sense not your bieber bullshit

  • @gamrguy4444 yeah those 12 year old girls gotta a ''long way'' to go before they can become your age and listen to ''real music''. you're ''too mature'' for 12 year old girls because they can't fly as high as you LOL BITCH get a grip because you think the shit just because you're most likely open to music for the first time. just because you're a listener of retro music doesn't mean you have the knowledge on how it is made. so shut the fuck up faggot

  • @PopCulture20 i do have knowledge on how its made considering i play it... i never said theres an age limit on good music... ive been listening to it since the 3rd grade...

  • @gamrguy4444 for a 13 year old, you seem mighty gangsta behind your keyboard. like to see you call me an asshole to my face coward and the gay joke passed because no one was talking to you MORON

  • @songwrite well thats a shame because im not trying to be "gangsta" and i will call you an asshole to your face... and you are the moron because read his fuckin comment... it was a reply to my comment

  • @gamrguy4444 trust me, if I wasn't as well-grounded as I'm am now, I would seriously beat the living shit out of you, but some people just aren't worth it. you keep acting like you're so big and bad just because you like music that came before your age group, because one of these days you will rub your sp-called knowledge in someone's face, and that person is going to do my job for me of kicking the shit out you bitch

  • @songwrite exactly this is my last response because some people arent worth it... not gonna waste my time fighting with some 40 year old over the internet i have better things to do

  • @gamrguy4444 yeah arguing with people online that you'll never see is what YOU DO BEST!!! dumb bitch!!

  • @PopCulture20 ok, you're an asshole...

the who is way better than green day... (just sayng, rsrs).....

  • @gamrguy4444 and who said 13 year olds don't sleep around either? nice attempt at excusing yourself because of your age, but you failed loser

  • @songwrite i never said 13 year olds dont sleep around... and you're probably 40 feeling mighty tough attempting to insult me

  • @diamondlion2 lmfao..go watch it live...this is a fact..vocals by greenday suck..bass player isnt on par...and the drums..LMFAO..watch this live..keith moon was the best drummer ever...his drumming is unduplicatable..there isnt a human on earth who could cover a who song on the drums the way keith played

  • @diamondlion2 uhmmmmmmmmmm...no...green days version was not better.anyway this was a horrible version from the who. if you wanna here a good version of this song lsiten to the live at leeds version.

  • Comment removed

  • this lasted 1o minits because the album needed a decent running time

  • I love this song in Rushmore.

  • @Jeffrywith1e I don't have any idea what happened in Rushmore while this was playing. it's like my mind started rolling in the music and I didn't have any desire to make it stop. The version they used in the film, you probably know, was from the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, recorded in 1968 but not released until 1996.

  • @notanotheraccount In Rushmore, Max tried to basically ruin Herman's life while this song was playing.

  • @mertonparka

I don't reply on that many comments, but I want to let you know don't agree with this.

I think you should listen, if you haven't already, to Who's Next or Quadrophenia.. or ehm, you might like The Who By Numbers. It's a very different style :)

  • @Grafietstift this is good

  • @blueridger28 Though I really dig the Rock-'n-Roll Circus + Live at Leeds versions better, I got to agree! The Who's my favorite band, so yea :) Thanks for yer comment

  • live at leeds version is better, I think

  • No point in arguing the punk credence of Green Day, good music is good music. Their roots are in punk but they have always had a melodic sound, even when they were on Lookout! But they've always done what they wanted with their music, rather than being told and that's got them a lot of crap in the past. But that's not to be argued here, the relevant point is, Green Day's cover of this is amazing.

  • Depends what you mean By amazing. if you're talking about the instrument work by them. yes, it was faithful to the original and kudos. but if you thought them singing out of thier nose like every concieted boyband ever, trying to act as if they're singing with out of controll teenage depression, with no since of passion or realisation that the who never intended this song to be sang in this context.....yes, amazing.

The Ramones are ten times the punk band they will ever be. Period.

  • I don't know but to me Green Day ain't punk, but neither is The Who xs

To me punk is Dead Kennedys, Exploited, Operation Ivy,...

    this song rocks btw

  • I think it's fair to argue that Green Day's early work is punk. You can easily hear the influence that bands like "The Ramones" had on their music. (Not to mention that they covered songs by "The Ramones" for them at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.)

They have however moved away from punk rock to a more modern rock approach that incorporates and displays a wider array of influences... such as The Who. :p

And yes, I agree. The Who are not in anyway punk rock.

  • @hunterjumper938, thank u, u saved me the trouble of bitchin at him xD

  • @DEIassee, either you have never heard any of green day's music, or you have no idea what punk is.... their last two albums have been all about arguing against society.... and thats not really what punk is either... its about being an individual and being self independence

  • Haha, it's kinda ironic how Green Day covered a true punk band, and they're still trying to be. (When I say punk, I mean the kind of message they send in their songs, like sort of arguing against society)

  • DANG DANG DANG DANG DANG DANG!!

  • green day's version is great both are great

  • awsome

  • I prefer the version on the Kid's are Alright"

  • @tthegrey From the Rolling Stones' Rock 'N Roll Circus. The Who performed better than the Stones (or anyone else on the bill for that matter) and Mick and the boys refused to release their own performance for quite a while.

  • Oh, I would never sit on Ira the engine drivers lap hahahahahahahaah

  • It's Ivor the Engine Driver :p

  • Yes I know, but I knew an IRA. BTW, I never sat on Ivor's lap either.

  • nah, the version from rolling stones rocknroll circus is the best. such an epic song though

  • The studio version is awesome, but the version from Live at Leeds is beyond words. Live at Leeds is the greatest Live album ever, and I think this song is the best live song on that album. If you havent listened to it yet, I highly suggest it

  • Best Who song ever.

  • I always loved the Ivor the engine driver part. I think I sang it every other day...

  • Simply brilliant

  • this song just goes to show that modern music cannot compare to what music was around in the sixties. now-a-days, songs get played out on the radio in like 4 days tops, but these songs are songs that people will listen to for years& years.

  • I like certain parts better of each, the cover and the original. Personally I think Green Day butchered the Soon Be Home part. I like it here more. Their version of the whole song is a full minute shorter. If I were a producer or whatever the profession is, I would love to take different parts of each version and fuse them together to make one masterpiece of a 10 minute song, commemorating the Who and Green Day.

  • I agree.

  • Green Day Also Covered The Kid Are Alright, very good i think.

  • Green Day recently did a cover of this song, a really good one at that. It's nice to see other bands still appreciate The Who and pay them respect by covering their songs.

  • @WeLikeOurFeet yeah it was a really good cover

  • @WeLikeOurFeet I just wish Limp Bizkit wouldn't "respect" The Who with their godawful Behind Blue Eyes cover...

  • heh, never heard it, don't listen to much Limp Bizkit. Still even if the cover is a bad one it shows that The Who even in Modern Times is still timeless and that they are still loved by many modern music icons.

  • @WeLikeOurFeet Yeah, The Who have been a huge influence on Green Day, esp Billie Joe. Their song "Jesus Of Suburbia" and "Homecoming", you can hear the similarities and obvious influence.

  • @FinksEntourage

Not to mention the entire American Idiot album-- lots of Quadrophenia influence there.

  • @FinksEntourage Not mention Bowie too!

  • @FinksEntourage

Except the Who don't blow hard.

  • @FinksEntourage and the clash! :)) you can tell in a lot of their songs!

  • I always loved the cover for this album.

  • The Rock and Roll Circus version blew my mind - first time I heard this song, it's fantastic

  • This song is a lot better live, but I do adore the "cello cello cello cello" in this version.

You can hear it better in this version.

  • The best version is live. Here, Keith is often out of rhythm, despite excellent technique! So cranky..

  • a master piece

  • awsome

  • this is on live at leeds?

  • studio

  • it's on the extended version they put out about 10 years ago. It's not on the original cut

  • Yeah.

  • Live versions are so much better...the "you are forgiven" is heavenly in Live at Leeds

  • The rock n roll circus... and live at leeds is the best versions

  • The best version is live...

  • holy shit! this is the actuall album version. I've never heard it and i've known the live at leeds on and rock and roll circus. The Who's my fav band but i think if i would heard this first i would been like wtf who? woooo....
