i agree with your estimation of this film--it is a stand-out in a career of stand-outs. Martin Landau is a sheer joy to watch. An impeccable film!
Juda's guilt is caused by the same reason anyone feels guilt--because they are attacking others either physically or in their mind. Attack thoughts against our brothers and sisters causes inner guilt and is projected onto the world-at-large.
this was a brilliant ending..overall this was one of his best, but I think Bullets Over Broadway was just as interesting, and somewhat funnier. the brilliance of the ending is that it destroys woody allen's character both personally and professionally, as to what he believes.
Some of the nineties films were pretty good, but he's just awful now. Don't get me started on VickyCristina - I don't know why I listen to the critics!
I agree, Vicky Christina Barcelona was almost a welcome return to form, however I'm a Geordie from Newcastle Upon Tyne who loves the Big Apple and I would love to see him re-visit New York City and make a great film about the place he knows so well. The movies he made over here were really quite poor.
My favorite Woody Allen movie. I'm surprised that nobody has used the one word that describes Judah: Hypocrite. His post murder expressions of remorse struck me as something he felt he should say, something that would mitigate his guilt in this world or the next. Yet, he cold bloodedly went back to the scene of the crime to remove evidence and, as soon as the danger of detection had passed, his "remorse" disappeared very quickly. I don't think he learned anything from the experience.
At the risk of having Woody Allen grab Marshall McLuhan by the elbow and pull him onto the scene to tell me I'm full of prunes, I suggest Woody has created an allegory: Judah represents evil. Remember, Lucifer was the most favored of the angels, but he wanted more and turned against God. The rabbi represents good. Woody is Everyman. He wants to be good but he sins. He has to live with knowing evil appears to prosper while he suffers. He will move on and try, and fail, again.
You conclude that Woody describes an imperfect world, where murder is gotten away with, the wise say and do mundane things, etc., but that's not the point. This question is: so what are you going to do about all this??? What kind of life are you living, relative to this so called truth, and what kind of life will you live from this point on, now having seen and pondered my movie???
Jack and Judah are the same man, Judah is just slef whitewashed with a grander sense of self. In his defense he does not realize his fault. Jack knows who his is but both evil, one knowing one not,
this really helped me and opened my mind

"The last great Woody film."
...'Match Point' was vastly superior to this cavalcade of nihilistic pretensions!
Note: I abhorred 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona', though.
