This is silly. Parents have every right and responsibility to do this. My parents whipped me with belts and wooden paddles. Big deal. It hurts for like 1 or 2 minutes. Its really more about the anticipation of the pain you think it is going to inflict - parents have been doing this for 1000s of years.
Discipline is necessary. Of course there are people who go too far, but that didn't happen here. millions of parents around the world do the same thing.

Coaching and cognitive guidance are the best means to an end...with justification. Some parents even negotiate with their kids, which boosts their persuasion skills over time.
