I had hoped for final fantasy 13, but square-enix seems bent on taking the franchise down. Well except for this game, which I am playing currently and I am enjoying it.
FF4 was my first RPG back in 92 or so and it's still my favorite FF to this day, and my most played game of all time. I think the DS version is even harder than the Japanese SNES version - I'm glad someone else thought it was difficult. I was glad to see you stomping on those POS PS2 games :) I'm an old school gamer.

Guess what, I'm not listening to user reviews anymore. This is my personal opinion. Because I am not listening to user reviews, I will focus more on critic reviews.
No not really, X-2 was really good, it was way different, but the story of my favorite characters continued, and they couldn't leave it alone, becuase X was to sad. XII i couldn't get into becuase I wanted Turn Based Combat.
But I reckon that X-2 is more of a girly game *no offence to those who like the game*, but it centres around two main female characters from FFX + a newly introduced female character and all the other main characters were NPCs. The most badass of characters in FFX were non-playable in X-2. The story was alright, but it gets way too sidetracked from finding "Tidus" which is why people wanted a sequel to FFX. And if you want the good ending, you'll need to spend that extra effort to get 100%.
XII was very different to what people enjoyed in other Sqaure Enix games where you have Turn Based Combat (like in FFX and FF Tactics etc), the ATB similar to Turn Based Combat (Pretty much every other FF), then you have the action RPG (Kingdom hearts). XII brought a new genre to the franchise, but it failed miserably when people massively disliked the "license system" and the concept of "the world being the battlefield" instead of the classic random battles.
the only thing that sux is the bonus dungeons from ff 4 gba but otherwise it's better cuz of the auto battle saving me from carpal tunnel maps and augments.
You probably know this, but all the clips you showed at the start when talking about FF II for the SNES are actually from the GBA port of the game (which is pretty good in it's own right). The graphics were improved in some ways from the SNES version.
I think I'm going to buy it tomorrow because I have to go on a five hour car ride tomorrow. And considering the last four reviews I watched said it would take 20-30 hours, it'll keep me busy.

I've loved this game ever since it hit the Super NES way back in '91, and after playing all the remakes over the years I agree this is the best one. The difficulty was ramped up, the CG sequences are stunning, the story still holds up well and it's just everything that makes the old FF games classy.
This review was very cool and extremely well done. I haven't played the ds version in awhile. But it's very good! I bought it even though I don't own a DS. I had to borrow a friend's DS. I still have his DS actually. I'm surprised he didn't want it back yet.
Good job. Good nostalgia and fun game. But the hate for Final Fantasy XII is unwarranted, it's the best 3D FF game... random encounters + Playstation load times (fuk dat) and FFX/X-2 have the most ridiculously gay and worthless characters/voiceovers outside of a few Capcom games.

FFIV is my favorite Final Fantasy though FFVI was good too. My favorite version of IV is the Chronicles version for the PSX. That is the closest to the original Japanese version.
I've played FFIV advance which was ok...but I wasn't too impressed. I haven't played the DS version. I'd like to try it sometime.
I just stick with the PSX version. That game is mean in its difficulty, but I like that. I actually thought XII was ok, but then again I haven't enjoyed a FF game since #VI mostly.
I think the harder difficulty might be because the original japanese game was harder, and they dumbed it down when they ported it to the US as Final Fantasy II.

I'm not sure if anything you said is vital to gameplay, but I skipped some of the middle section so I can find out for myself, I plan on getting this game quite soon, and you just boosted my confidence in it, and I'm sure I'll love the difficulty, I hate it when games are easy, nothing more annoying than spending 30~ish dollars on a game for 2 hours of gameplay.

The formula is great specially for the DS. The younger Gamers will love it. But for the more mature ones well they will have twisted feelings about playing this one atleast i have. For the consoles such as PS3, X360 & maybe WII [thou i am positive WII will not have many mature games most of them are made for kids] a change into a similiar style like FF8 or FFX graphics would be nice it doesn`t have to be 3or4 but maybe FF6 that would be nice. agreed. Kain's voice was amazing. I don't think you need to grind there. When the Doctor casts reverse, you can fuck his shit up by using an elixir on him if you don't mind sparing one.
the dark elf, barbariccia , rubicante and those fucking orbs. Mosts of the bosses are very hard to beat as opposed to the original on SNES. You'll see when you get to the orbs, you can only win by being lucky, it's just a question of whether one of the orbs is gonna be an asshole and use the laser beam on you ( which overkills all your characters) or not...
only the attack orb does the laserbeam attack, the defense orb only heals, so its better to kill the attack orb first then go at it with the main cpu with edges throws till its weak enough then summon, and black magic with fusoya and rydia. It wasnt that bad.

Yes, it is harder. FF2 (SNES-US) was made easier. FF4 (Super FamiCom) was much harder. FF4 DS kept the difficulty of its Japanese original.

I own both- this is far superior.
It's a much better game than FF:CC- in terms of difficulty and just that final fantasy feel.
Crisis core, whilst a good game has annoying things like the reel based fights and the shortness.

FFIV is my favorite Final Fantasy though FFVI was good too. My favorite version of IV is the Chronicles version for the PSX. That is the closest to the original Japanese version.
I've played FFIV advance which was ok...but I wasn't too impressed. I haven't played the DS version. I'd like to try it sometime.
I just stick with the PSX version. That game is mean in its difficulty, but I like that. I actually thought XII was ok, but then again I haven't enjoyed a FF game since #VI mostly.

I think the harder difficulty might be because the original japanese game was harder, and they dumbed it down when they ported it to the US as Final Fantasy II.

i happen to think edward is very useful if you know how to use him... seriously he could be last man standing use salve and save everyone, his later bardsongs are very helpful, his attack isn't that bad, and he is hands down the biggest video game emo of all time

Damn, nice review, funny too but you should put some spoiler warnings up! I'm not sure if anything you said is vital to gameplay, but I skipped some of the middle section so I can find out for myself, I plan on getting this game quite soon, and you just boosted my confidence in it, and I'm sure I'll love the difficulty, I hate it when games are easy, nothing more annoying than spending 30~ish dollars on a game for 2 hours of gameplay.

Good review. FF fans should REMEMBER FF4 as one of the best installations in the series. Golbez would pwn Sephiroth. (waits for teh Sephy fans to converge on him and rip him apart for insolence.)

A truly great game. My only complaints is that you have to watch the looong cutscene over and over again every time you lose to barbariccia, and there is not save point close to zemus.

The formula is great specially for the DS. The younger Gamers will love it. But for the more mature ones well they will have twisted feelings about playing this one atleast i have. For the consoles such as PS3, X360 & maybe WII [thou i am positive WII will not have many mature games most of them are made for kids] a change into a similiar style like FF8 or FFX graphics would be nice it doesn`t have to be 3or4 but maybe FF6 that would be nice. Well never lose your hope i guess :)

I have this and its awesome.
everything you said cam out of my mouth when i played it, and the music is so awesome.
the only crappy part is that they made it too hard.
i'm stuck with that lugae guy and the level grinding sucks in the tower unless you meet a dragon.
I actually thought kain's voice was awesome.
its so deep and sinister sounding.
lastly, don't diss rosa, she was hot even in 16-bits.

agreed. Kain's voice was amazing. I don't think you need to grind there. When the Doctor casts reverse, you can fuck his shit up by using an elixir on him if you don't mind sparing one.

and i have to admit they were pretty good voice actors, i liked them.
not like the dubbed animes, most of them were terrible compared to the subs.

the dark elf, barbariccia , rubicante and those fucking orbs. Mosts of the bosses are very hard to beat as opposed to the original on SNES. You'll see when you get to the orbs, you can only win by being lucky, it's just a question of whether one of the orbs is gonna be an asshole and use the laser beam on you ( which overkills all your characters) or not...

only the attack orb does the laserbeam attack, the defense orb only heals, so its better to kill the attack orb first then go at it with the main cpu with edges throws till its weak enough then summon, and black magic with fusoya and rydia. It wasnt that bad.
