I fly charter. Started at 45k as FO. I feel sorry for the pilots who get suckered into the airlines. Go 135... Get a couple types and then find a 91 operation so you can have a normal life and make good pay.
That, I think is the saddest video I have seen. These dedicated men & women have several 100's lives to protect and serve daily from one route to another and they love their jobs and come from aviation in their blood and their families and I'm shocked to learn that they get paid a mere 20-30K p/year. Compare this to pilots who fly Qatar Airways/Emirates Airlines and South African airlines. Anyways, thanks for posting this video and the least anyone can do is to say THANKS to them after a flight
WELL GUYS,,,I SPEND 70,000 BUCKS FROM 0 TO 500 HOURS,,,GOT A JOB WITH AIR WISCONSIN,,22,700 YEAR AFTER 5 YEARS,,,NOW I DRIVE TRUCKS I MAKE 70,000...I DICIDE TO BUY MY OWN TRUCK I MAKE 169,000,,,AFTER ALL EXPENSES 130,000 WITH ME,,,IN JUST 1 YEAR,,NOT BAD,,
Wow, I really admire these pilots. $22.89/hr and you have hundreds of peoples live in your hands... That just and insult but you can tell their passionate for what they do
I make $21,500.00 a year flying this airplane airplane for another airline. Luckly i dont have to commute 7HRS! I do work 12hr days and it is very fatiguing. Most people think we get paid very well and that the job is easy, which is not true.
I see a lot of people write "no matter what the pay, I still wanna be a pilot!"
Even though I admire the attitude because it is what it takes to become a pilot, I feel that this may also be the downfall of the industry. There are too many people who want to do this for free. And then, after 15 years in the business (me) or sooner, they realize that it's a steep price for not having a normal life. Which is hat draws people to the business and then turns them off . . .
I'm currently an Eagle pilot on the ERJ...seriously thinking of a career change. It's unfortunate..I LOVE what I do. But spending 70% of the rest of my life away from home, on the road, living out of a suitcase in random hotels in random cities is not appealing anymore.
So let me see if I've got this right. The pilot commutes seven hours to work, then works another 12 hours straight. How is his fatigue level safe for passengers during is 11th and 12th hours at the controls?
don't let stuff like this discourage you if you truly love aviation. Yes its not a job you take to make a ton of money these days, but if you have a passion for flying you'll make it work and enjoy it.
I was so born in the wrong decade : (. this shatters my dream...i guess ill have to go study in my moms country. guaranteed to hop onto an a320 after flight school. wait...nvm - _ - lol
@DVA5212 -from friends that fly for AE. Starting F/O pay is about 20k. Starting Capt pay is about 45k. The bigger the plane and the longer a capt has flown for a company the bigger the paycheck. My last CFI is now a CRJ F/O. His good friend is a capt w/Eagle and makes 130k. He's been there over 12 years though.
130k?! Jeesh, disregard my last comment, I replied to the wrong comment -_-
Pay is based upon seniority, but I have trouble believing 130K to fly an ERJ...however I'll take your word for it... sorry for my attitude in the previous comment...
@DVA5212 -haha, no prob. Hey, I'm taking someone else's word on it as well. However, I don't believe he'd lie to me. Ex Apache pilot, retired as a Lt. Col. Take care, and happy flying...
@DVA5212 Not to say I think starting pay of a F/O is good. Just the opposite. If I can avoid the regionals I will. But if I have to suck it up for 2-3 years that's a choice I will make. It's all supply and demand and we (pilots) are our own worst enemy.
@GingBread generally it take 2-4 years before you recruited by the "big guys" , in that time period pay is generally between 15K - 32K , the regionals won't pay you a nice salary, regardless.
The pilots are based on block time, and being a regional pilot you have less block time due to the shorter flight distances, and the rest of the time they are walking around the terminals, not making any money, but flying isn't for the pay, it's for the flying (:
@ie210 WRT pay, it depends on a lot of things. On the EMB/CRJ it's not too hard to top 6 figures with a little OT. First year pay is no big secret, but even at the mainline you take a hit going over the first year. I'm looking forward to transferring over to AA next summer, but the pay will be the biggest hurdle! :-O
@ie210 LOL! Yeah, kinda funny! This whole segment was supposed to be a part of the CNBC special "A Day In The Life Of American Airlines", but it wound up only as an extra on the DVD. It was pretty fun putting it together, and kind of weird to see it after all this time! I guess this video has been out on YouTube about a year, but I just discovered it last night when a friend emailed it to me.
@ie210 He's talking about pilots, (captains) not co-pilots. Yes, an FO makes about 19 or 21K, but once you get in to the left seat, you get a BIG raise. 90K i comfy.
@ie210 A lot of the senior pilots make around $90,000 a year. Keep in mind they have been with the company for 15 plus years. The new guys get paid $19,000.

@BIGCHRIS7600 And $22.89 is just for the 80 hours a month they fly. That's like making $11.45 an hour for 40 hours a week! Shame!

CRJ Captains make much less the $90,000.
DVA5212 10 months ago
@DVA5212 Starting the make just about 1/2 of that. An RJ captain can make 6 figures with enough years at the company. Not bad for a 70-90 seat plane.

b) you are about to retire
c) you are aware we are talking about regional salaries, right?
Okay, maybe I exaggerated a little. Plenty of ASA capts, and SkyWesties make decent coint, but talk to Mesa, go jet, TSA employees...
