OMG!, i just had a major nostalgic moment. This was the first console i ever owned! Being from Europe, it was called a Philips. I would love to get a hold of one of these. I remember the first game i ever played was Terrahawks......if you could do a review on that i would be probably squeal!
my dad bought it for us in the early 80s.i wanted an atari but he kept saying this system was superior, so he ended up buying me and my sister this.my original system broke about 15 years ago, but just last year i found one in super condition boxed for 40 bucks!! my wife asks me what i see in this system cause we have all the newer systems , but tou would of had to ezperienced it then to understand it now.
How do you use the built in calculator and other programs you mentioned? I tried turning it on without a cartridge in it and all I got was a blank screen. It's no big deal as something as basic as a calculator is useless nowadays, still it would be nice if I could figure out how to use it.
I think what he never said (got sidetracked) was the the caterpillar from K.C's Krazy Chase was a representation of Centipede which was a popular Atari game..
a couple of notes, the invisible walls on kc munchkin were optional, and there was a 4th master strategy game released that is exceedingly rare called the pink panther, I think as to date only the eprom has been found, but rumors abound that it was released in extremely limited quantities in Brazil, where the videopac was very successful, all of hte parker bros games weren't released in the states, the only 3rd party developer was imagic (in the states)
I"m 32 and I cut my teeth on this system. just watching this video was hardcore nostalgia. It wasn't as cool as an atari, but it had some really nice games. We had the voice, the master strategy games, the whole works. Hours of fun playing UFO and Smithereens!
@stilleavy I was born in 1978, I vividly remember playing it when I was very young. I actually remembering seeing pick axe pete on display in service merchandise and begging for it.
I just picked up this system, box and all at a Thrift Store for $1. The only thing missing was the power adapter. Does anyone know where to get one or know of one that is compatible with it? Thanks....
It's pretty neat to see a part of video game history like this. I never imagined that there would be Pac Man clones. So this video is very informative for me. Thanks a lot, buddy!
My brother bought a magnavox odyssey 2 for $5, only thing is it was missing the power adapter. Does anybody know if you can use a aftermarket adapter and what is it?
@rrob78 yeah you can. I bought one at radio shack like 10 years ago and it worked fine. I don't remember what the wattage/voltage was, but just find a generic power adaptor at radio shack with the same voltage.
WOW...I never knew this console existed! Now I need to find one...I love collecting old games! Shoot, I still play my NES and Turbo Grafx 16 on a regular basis..
Is Cryptologic the word guessing game?? My parents had an odyssey 2 back in the day (at least, I *think* it was), and there was a game were you could play word games. Ummm...yeah. That's all I had. Is that the right game? Thanks, ~ N.
My aunt in Belgium had a Videopac, and he still had it back in the nineties catching dust, I'm so sad that I didn't told him to give it to me back in the day!
@majora1993 as far as I remeber is KC Munchkin (yeah! like KC & the Sunshine band), and actually the first one is a great game! the second is also good but the first one is so good that you can see why Atari didn't want it to be released with the console.
The 'main brain' is an Intel chip that is socketed and with a bit of effort can be upgraded. Everything is done on that chip as far as memory and I/O, and it seems that Magnavox had intended it to be upgradable at some point.
Great review John! I think the Odyssey 2 has a very good design for a late 70s console! The membran keys may not function well but sure looks cool and futuristic for it's time!
Awsome review, did you know you can type your name in to show on screen during a game? It shows up where the line of question marks are at the bottom of the screen. Never saw the voice unit before, cool
Atari took Magnavox to court. What is the name of the game you are playing that Atari got so pissed off about? Hopefully you can get the speech synthesis unit working again soon!
@lestat34208 Yes your correct that was the original question. Do you find the lawsuit to be offensive to the gaming community or do you believe that for that time period it was the correct thing for Atari to do? K.C. Munchkin! = Pac-Man!
@SledgehammerMario Well I cna see why atari saw what they saw in KC. Perhaps back in the day they were over proctected. I do not believe it to be offensive to the gaming community. I am sure that magnavox was indeed inspired by pacman but they wanted to take their own spin on the game? I still lvoe playing KC today sometimes better than pacman :P Do you play it? I may have to do a game play when my channel is up :P
The game boxes for the conquest of the world and quest for the rings were totally awesome! Full color instruction booklet together with great artwork on the box. The concept of combining a board with the videogame is pretty cool as well, but I don't know how it works in practice. The Odyssey 2 is a nice collectible system.
I've got the Philips VideoPac version of the Odyssey 2, but it's missing the nubs at the top of the sticks, do you know if I can buy any replacements anywhere?
I believe KC Munchkin was actually the first Pac-Man-style game to be released for a home console, beating the official (and very crappy) Atari 2600 Pac-Man to the market by a few months. What really hurt Magnavox was not so much the Atari lawsuit, but rather their inability to get any third-party developers to make games for the Odyssey2. Magnavox only had a very small group of in-house programmers, so most of the games were not as good as they could've been.
yeah, KC Munchkin isn't too pricey. I actually got mine free cib at a used game store, but i think thats cause they just wanted to bail all pre nes games. Had i actually paid for it, it was only 6 bucks. not too bad at all. Once again john, nutha great video.
wow thank you so much john for doing this review. ive always herd about this system but didnt know anything about it. thank you so much, great review as always. i also have another question for you though. in this video you metiond the video game crash, what exactly is that. ive heard mulitple old school video game reviewers metion it but none would go into detail. if you have time do you think you could do a short video explaining what the video game crash exactly was

finally ive been waiting for this review forever i recently found a luggage box in the attic that had this system with like 10 games also had a atari 5200 inside!!!
@KingCalaway Though not the most responsive YES they do work, much like the membrane keyboard on the original Atari 400 computer among other 80's computers.
That was my first system as a kid (though I wasn't born until 86). Had the system still up until my last move. Don't know where it is now.
