hey man this is rlly good, some ppl would just use a killswitch but heres another way u can do that tom does alternatively

if u have a guitar like a les paul set up, just turn down all the way on the bridge volume but leaving ur neck pickup volume all the way on. then use one arm to rub on the strings to do the dj scratch and ur other hand to toggle the switch to get the killswitch feel but without having to custom one in. hope this helped

O.k. to settle this, there is a killswitch installed on Tom Morello's guitar which he uses to make this solo, however.. if you dont have one and you have a guitar with two volume knobs and a three way selector, you turn the volume down to 0 on the neck p/u and the bridge p/u put at full volume, then you toggle between sound and no sound, done and done!

You can easily make a killswitch effect on a strat.

1. take a look at the control switch- turn the tone down on the 3 center settings, but leave the outer two settings with a hot signal.

2.scratch back and forth on the strings

3. while scratching, shift through all of the settings back and forth to the rythem of the song. This will create your killswitch effect.

Okay. Every strat guitar has a control switch below the strings. This switch has 5 different settings. You take the first setting and turn the tone all the way up giving it a hot signal. You do the same with the fifth setting. Leave the other 3 settings on a low tone. Move the switch through all of the setting from 1 to 5. do this at a fast speed to the rythem of the solo. If done correctly, it should make a stuttering effect. I have a video of it on my page if your still confused.

He isn't playing a Fender strat, as such, it is different than the settings on a Fender Stratocaster. He isn't even playing a Fender for that matter, so it is likely that he doesn't have two seperate volume knobs. In fact, from the looks of the guitar, I'm almost positive he doesn't.
