The intro is correct, although you don't cover the timing issue. The intro is 2 measures, 1 is 4/4 and the other is 9/8. And he starts on the first beat of the first measure, although it sounds like the 2nd beat when you listen. Very tricky. If you watch the new McCartney videos you'll see his lead guitarist uses a bottleneck. The actual Beatles recording is picking plus the bottleneck slide at the end.
The tune is counted off: "1, 2, 3, 4" with the pick up note on the "&" of 4.
If you listen to the recording without that reference, the 1st note you hear feels like beat "1", which gives the rest of the intro the "odd-time" feel that you've described (1 bar of 9/8; 1 bar of 4/4).
In fact, the intro consists simply of 2 bars of 4/4 preceded by the pickup note.
The Beatles were pretty creative and innovative in the mid-60's..just not THAT much (...yet)..
Yes, thanks for this - it took me quite a while to figure that one out (way back in 1965) Also: If the first note of the guitar is played as an eight note pickup before the downbeat you can count two 4/4 measures...the drum fill comes ON the third beat of the 2nd measure, but I have been sufficiently thrown off the trail by that point ;-) I just wonder if all this was intentional...Rgds.
